* CHANGES...Earlier start and end time to advisory. Slight
  increase in wind gust speeds. 

* WHAT...Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph 
  expected. Gusts up to 70 mph in wind prone areas. 

* WHERE...Greater Reno-Carson City-Minden Area.

* WHEN...From 1 AM to 1 PM PST Thursday.

* IMPACTS...Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. 
  Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may 
  result.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel will be difficult for high-profile
  vehicles especially along US-395 and I-580. Check with NDOT for
  any possible high-profile vehicle travel restrictions.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio
furniture, holiday decorations, and trash cans before winds
increase which could blow these items away. The best thing to do
is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and
water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in
the event of a power outage.

.SYNOPSIS...

It will be quiet today and most of Wednesday. A pair of strong
winter storms Thursday through the weekend will bring periods of
gusty winds and heavy mountain snow. Travel through the Sierra
will become hazardous at times, with accumulating snow possible
even on the lower valley floors.

.SHORT TERM...Through Friday...

* A period of quiet weather today and Wednesday. Winds will
  gradually increase over the ridges Wednesday with some late day
  breezes possible. Inversions strengthen today with only marginal
  ventilation. So some valley haze is possible through Wednesday AM.
  Mixing/ventilation will begin to improve from the Reno-Tahoe area
  northward Wednesday afternoon as winds aloft increase and
  inversions weaken.

* Storm one of two is on track to bring a round of winter weather
  late Wednesday night through early Friday morning. Timing is
  similar to the previous forecast with precipitation reaching
  northeast CA late Wednesday night, spreading southward along the
  Sierra during the day Thursday and spilling over into western NV
  Thursday night. WPC QPF has not changed considerably and still
  shows 2-2.5" along the crest, 1-1.5" in the Tahoe Basin and
  foothills, 0.50-1.00" along the Hwy 395 corridor, and lesser
  amounts into the Basin and Range. ECMWF meteograms are fairly
  solid with these amounts and even have a few members that are
  slightly wetter. Not surprising given moisture from a southern
  stream shortwave will be getting entrained into this system's
  frontal zone. Spillover Thursday will be limited mainly to the
  foothills, but will spread farther into western NV Thursday
  evening as the front moves southeast. Confidence is getting pretty
  high for a legitimately impactful winter storm given good ensemble
  support and model continuity over the past 24 hours. There is a
  high probability that the winter storm watch will be upgraded to a
  warning at some point during the next 24 hours.

* SNOWFALL: Snow levels will be low enough for snow north of a
  Susanville-Gerlach line and above 5000-5500" elsewhere during the
  day Thursday. Travel through the Tahoe Basin and mountains of
  northeast CA will become increasingly difficult Thursday as
  snowfall rates increase to 2-3"/hr with heavy snow reaching the
  foothills and eastern Sierra through Mono County Thursday
  afternoon/evening. A solid foot of snow will accumulate in these
  areas with 2 feet along the crest and areas west of Hwy 89.
  Wouldn't be surprised to see locally higher totals. As snow levels
  fall Thursday night, some light accumulations could result in some
  slick areas in the Reno-Carson City area. The NBM shows 1-2" in
  Reno-Carson City Thursday evening with 4+ inches in the foothills
  above 5000'. As is usually the case, the greatest challenge will
  be how much snow accumulates around the main cities and valleys of
  western NV as rain transitions to snow. Snowfall will quickly
  diminish from north to south overnight with light snow lingering
  Friday morning in Mono County.

* WINDS: Ridge level winds will increase late Wednesday and peak
  overnight through Thursday, with 700 mb winds of 50-60 kt leading
  to potential maximum gusts of 100-120 mph. For lower elevations,
  peak gusts of 40-55 mph are currently a reasonable projection,
  with potential for 60-70 mph gusts in wind prone areas.

.LONG TERM...Friday Evening and Beyond...

Friday night starts out fairly calm, with light winds out of the
southwest. However, the fair conditions are short lived, as the
next system approaches the West Coast. The GFS and EC ensembles
have more or less agreed upon the timing of the upper-level low
coming onshore Sunday. The timing of the most persistent snowfall,
even for lower elevations, currently has the potential of being
Saturday night- Sunday morning. Although this storm won't be as
strong as Thursday's event due to less upper-level support,
ensembles still indicate amounts of 1-2 feet for the high Sierra
and a few inches for the foothills across western NV and
northeastern CA, given enough cold air, moisture, and forcing.
Amounts have been trending higher for this storm in the more
recent runs to come close to the totals of Thursday's system, but
with less forcing and weaker pressure/temperature gradients, it'll
be hard to match the first storm's intensity. Something else
that's worthy of noting, looking back at the GFS IVT plume of
Thursday's storm 5 days out looks almost identical what's
currently showing for Saturday's system. So in terms of moisture,
these systems look to be very similar. After the system passes,
ensembles are consistent in showing ridging for the first half of
next week.

.AVIATION...

Winds today will generally be light, with a few clouds expected
to roll in during the afternoon. Winds will start to increase over
the ridges Wednesday then continue to increase across all areas
through Thursday morning as a strong winter storm approaches. A
pair of winter storms Thursday and Saturday will bring gusty winds
and heavy mountain snow. Some accumulation is possible on lower
valley floors as well.
