.UPDATE...

Quick update was sent out to clean up the expired Heat Advisories,
and also to start Saturday's Lake Wind Advisory a couple hours
earlier, as guidance indicates winds picking up closer to midday
even across west central NV.

Reno did manage to tie today's record high at 96 degrees, although
the highest temperatures occurred farther east in the communities
near US-95--Fallon touched 100 degrees while Hawthorne and
Lovelock reached 99. These locations will see similar heat again
Saturday, while some cooling will spread across the rest of

SYNOPSIS...

High pressure keeps unseasonably hot temperatures through Saturday.
Another round of windy conditions arrives this weekend with chances
for showers/thunderstorms and cooler temperatures Saturday night
into Sunday. Expect poor conditions for recreation activities on
Sunday. Cooler temperatures return for the start of the week before
warming back up by Wednesday.

SHORT TERM (Through Sunday Night)...
For the majority of us, the warmest day of the year thus far is
expected this afternoon with widespread mid to upper 90s (maybe a
100?) across western Nevada and 80s in the Sierra valleys. See the
latest Heat Advisory products issued by our office for the latest
numbers and calls to action. Diurnally driven westerly winds can
be anticipated later this afternoon and evening, with gusts
generally in the 20-30 mph range.

Tomorrow (Sat) will be fairly similar in terms of weather, but
temperatures should be a few degrees lower than what we'll
experience today (with the exception of Churchill/Mineral that
will remain just as hot) as heights edge downward slightly out
ahead of an approaching trough. Warm, dry, and breezy conditions
may result in a few hours of elevated fire threat, particularly
across portions of Western Humboldt and Lahontan Basins - where
lower elevation fine fuels may already be cured. Winds may be just
strong enough to loft some dust and cause issues on area lakes; a
Lake Wind Advisory will be hoisted for some of our western Nevada
lakes.

Moving into Sunday, things continue to trend upward in terms of
precipitation and wind as consistency among models exists on the
depth of the trough moving into N California/NW Nevada. Ensemble
meteograms are in good agreement of peak wind gusts between 40-55
mph, with higher gusts across wind prone areas. Strong winds,
perhaps in excess of 100 mph are expected along the Sierra ridges
due to 700mb sustained winds approaching 50-60 knots. For
precipitation on Sunday, favorable kinematic setup along with
adequate thermodynamic profiles exist for isolated to scattered
thunderstorms particularly north of I-80 and southward along the
Sierra. Fast storm motion may limit rainfall produced by any one
particular storm which could result in a new fire start or two if
heavy enough rain doesn't coincide with the strike. In total,
precip amounts look to be 0.10 to 0.30 inches, with up to a
quarter inch also possible across the Tahoe Basin. Wouldn't be
surprised to see isolated higher totals in the Lassen/Modoc/N
Washoe area convection is most likely to be favored.

LONG TERM (Monday and Beyond)...
A trough will be exiting the region at the beginning of the week,
with a ridge building in behind it. Monday afternoon will be a
relatively cooler day from what we've been having. In fact, it
will be the coolest day of the week with a decent warm up on
Wednesday. High temperatures will start to drop and winds will
start to increase slightly at the end of the week.

* Temperatures: Following a cold front passing through on Sunday
  afternoon, Monday will feature slightly below average
  temperatures with highs in the mid 70s for western NV valleys.
  Monday night's lows will be in the low/mid 40s for the western
  NV valleys. After Monday, a warming trend will push high
  temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday barely over 90 for
  western NV valleys. Current ensemble guidance for Friday and
  Saturday shows temperatures will be around normal for this time
  of year.

* Wind: For the most part the winds next week will be nothing
  abnormal. Monday will feature NW winds with gusts up to 30 mph for
  the western valleys and 40 mph along the Sierra ridges. Tuesday
  and Wednesday will have light afternoon zephyr breezes. Winds on
  Thursday and Friday look to be a little above average as a system
  works its way into the area.

* Precipitation: No indication of precipitation all week until we
  get to Friday. There are signs of a system coming up from the
  south Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. Model cluster
  anomalies are very consistent in producing a cut-off low that
  approaches from the west later in the week.

AVIATION...
VFR conditions continue today through Saturday, with gusts 20-25
kts during the afternoons. Temperatures will top out in the lower
to mid 90s for western Nevada, while Sierra terminals will see
80s. Today will be the warmest day of the week, and could produce
some cumulus that pop during the peak heating daytime hours.

Saturday an uptick in wind speeds will bring gusts of 25-30 kts.
The incoming low pressure system will increase turbulence,
mountain waves and LLWS.

Sunday brings a cooldown toward average highs in the upper 70s
for western Nevada, 60s for Sierra locations. Aviation impacts
such as LLWS, turbulence and blowing dust will increase yet again
on Sunday as gusts reach 35-50 kts while ridges may see gusts to
100+ kts. Showers and storms may initiate along the northern
Sierra and north of I-80, so KTVL-KWMC and points to the north
should watch the skies for increasing clouds. -HRICH

FIRE WEATHER...
Temperatures today range 15-20 degrees above average, allowing
for further drying of fine fuels through Saturday. For Saturday,
winds will gust 30-40 mph over western Nevada (south of I-80, east
of US 395). RH values through there will drop to >10% during the
day, allowing fuels to continue to cure in that area.

Cloud cover increasing into Sunday afternoon signals the trough
that will produce showers and some thunder for areas north of I-80
and along the northern Sierra. For the Sierra, west winds will
gust to 40-55 mph with ridges gusting 80+ mph. For areas south of
I-80 and east of US 395, RH values range 15-30%, with the driest
areas east of US 95 which will advance the drying of fuels for
those areas.

...Windy Weekend with Scattered Showers and Thunderstorms While
Heat Retreats...

* While most areas will see some cooling on Saturday, West Central
  Nevada near and east of US-95 can again expect highs between 95
  and 100 degrees. Be prepared for heat health impacts, especially
  for vulnerable populations and those outdoors for extended
  periods. For more information, please see the Heat Advisory
  statement.

* Increased snow melt from the recent heat will lead to minor
  rises on creeks and streams in the Sierra from snowmelt. Cold
  water could impact recreation and high elevation water
  crossings.

* Winds are forecast to increase this weekend, with the stronger
  winds expected Sunday. Be prepared for winds to impact boating
  and travel, along with blowing dust downwind of dry lake beds.
  These winds could cause increased concern for fire starts in
  vegetation that has dried out due to the heat. Be fire aware
  this weekend and follow local fire restrictions.

* Temperatures will cool quite a bit Sunday with showers and
  thunderstorms moving into the Sierra, northeast California and
  northwest Nevada.
