  feet on Pyramid Lake.

* WHERE...Greater Reno-Carson City-Minden Area and Western 
  Nevada Basin and Range including Pyramid Lake.

* WHEN...Until 2 AM PDT Saturday.

* IMPACTS...Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. 
  Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may 
  result. Dangerous boating conditions on Pyramid Lake.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Winds will last into the night Friday
  night, especially for the Reno-Carson City area. Areas of
  blowing dust are possible downwind of the Carson Sink, which
  could bring reduced visibility to I-80, US-95, and US-50. Travel
  restrictions are possible for high profile vehicles. Check with
  NDOT for the latest on road conditions. Consider delaying going
  out on area lakes.

.SYNOPSIS...

Today will be warm and pleasant ahead of a series of weather systems
that will impact the region Thursday through Mother's Day weekend.
Winds will increase Thursday with strong winds possible Friday.
Mother's Day weekend will feature much cooler temperatures with
periods of gusty winds and a potential for rain and snow showers.

.SHORT TERM...

Get outside today if you can! Plentiful sunshine, temperatures 10-15
degrees above normal, and light winds will make for a beautiful spring
day in this forecaster's opinion. Plus, it'll be the nicest day we'll
have for the next 5-7 days...unless you're jonesing for wind and cold
again. Plenty more details on that in the long term section below.

Winds will begin to increase again Thursday, initially across
ridgelines by daybreak, mixing down to all elevations by late
morning into early afternoon. While it will be solidly breezy, this
is only the warm-up to the next big wind event on Friday. For now,
ensemble meteograms are suggesting most locations will see wind
gusts in the 35-45 mph range on Thursday afternoon, locally stronger
in wind prone locations. This means rough lake waters and potential
travel difficulties for high profile vehicles. Sustained speeds
20-25 mph across the west central Nevada basin and range should be
enough to begin to loft dust off the Carson Sink as well, though
am not expecting the extent to be as wide as what we may see Friday.

Temperatures will begin to cool but remain mild Thursday. A few
light showers are possible near the Oregon border with increasing
cloud cover throughout the region. -Dawn

.LONG TERM...Friday through next week...

...STRONGER WINDS FRIDAY, CHILLY WITH RAIN/SNOW SHOWERS EARLY NEXT
WEEK...

A cold trough invades the northwestern CONUS Friday. This will
intensify thermal gradients significantly with stronger winds the
result. Be prepared for southwest to west gusts climbing into the 35-
50 mph range Friday afternoon and evening ahead of a frontal
boundary being shoved south by the cold trough. Ensemble guidance
shows a ~60-80% chance for gusts to around 60 mph for the wind-prone
sections of US-395 from Susanville to the Reno-Carson area, falling
off to a 40-50% chance for the eastern Sierra. Blended guidance also
highlights the Surprise Valley for strong winds in excess of 55 mph;
however, confidence in this is lower than farther south due to the
fact that a cold front may clear that area by early-mid Friday
afternoon and tamp down the mixing down of stronger winds aloft.

With sustained winds in excess of 20-25 mph Friday, dust plumes are
a good bet off the western NV dry lake beds. It will be interesting
to see how much dust is left to blow off the playas after all the
recent dust plume-inducing wind events.

Chilly Mother's Day into early next week...

Simulations continue to show an increasingly chilly Mother's Day
weekend, with breezy to windy conditions persisting. The largest
drop in temperatures will be on Mother's Day with highs topping out
around 15-20 degrees below average as the Pac NW trough begins
driving southward in earnest. Highs on Mother's day should drop into
the 40s and 50s with increasing chances for snow showers (except
lowest valley rain/snow showers) late Sunday into Monday AM. This
system is dropping into the region from the Gulf of Alaska, which
could bring enough cold air to lower snow levels below 4000-5000
feet but with limited moisture. Precipitation totals are meager,
with only a 20% chance of a 0.25 inch in the Sierra with less than
0.10 inch elsewhere.

Cold air behind this system has a shot at dropping morning lows into
the upper 20s to mid 30s for lower valleys for next Monday to
Wednesday. Watch those sprinklers to avoid icing sidewalks and what-
not. I caused my own family to slip and slide in our driveway a
couple weeks back...how embarrassing for a meteorologist!

.AVIATION...

Overall pleasant flying conditions today; however, gusty east winds
across the Sierra crest this morning may bring some turbulence
along and west of the crest, along with periods of wind shear for
Sierra terminals. These east winds will decrease and turn light
southwesterly between 17-19z.

Southwest to west FL100 winds begin to ramp up before daybreak
Thursday, peaking around 45-55 kts by midday. Anticipate a period
of wind shear Thursday morning before winds mix down to the surface
during the afternoon hours. Terminals will see gusts in the 25-35 kt
range Thursday with rough air expected across the region due to
mountain wave turbulence. Even stronger SW-W winds will be on tap
for Friday, with similar speeds aloft but a more robust surface
gradient, allowing for gusts to reach 35-45 kts for terminal sites.
Anticipate blowing dust downwind of deserts and sinks (esp the
Carson Sink) both afternoons, which may obscure terrain. Breezy
winds to continue throughout the weekend.

A few light showers are possible near the Oregon border Thursday,
spreading into northeast CA Friday-Saturday. Lowering ceilings may
obscure mountain tops. -Dawn
