.SYNOPSIS...

Prepare for a strong and potentially damaging wind event Monday
afternoon into early Tuesday morning. Mountain snow may also slow
travel around the Tahoe Basin, northeast California and far
northwest Nevada Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning. Mid-week
should feature dry and warmer conditions with chances of rain,
snow, and gusty winds toward the end of the week.

.DISCUSSION...

...Damaging winds possible for the Tahoe Basin, western NV, and
northeast California Monday into early Tuesday morning...

A large and very cold area of low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska
will drop south toward the Pacific Northwest coast today and
tonight. This low will point the jet stream at the northern
Sierra and western NV Monday into Monday night leading to a
potential damaging wind event. Snow will accompany this system
from western Lassen County southward to the Tahoe Basin, with
travel impacts to mountain passes.

Winds are the much larger impact with this system for eastern
Lassen County, Reno-Carson-Quad Counties, Tahoe Basin, and
perhaps portions of northern Mono County. Sierra ridge level winds
should easily exceed 100 mph and could top out near 150 mph. In
the lower elevations gusts could reach 60 mph, and may rise to
70-80 mph for wind prone locations along US-395 from Susanville
to Reno-Carson to northern Mono County.

If damaging winds materialize there are a few impacts we would be
concerned about: Tree falls, power outages, aviation delays or
cancellations, road restrictions for high profile vehicles, and
localized areas of blowing snow in the Sierra as well as in
northeast CA above 5000 feet.

Snow Levels are forecast to start near 4000 feet Monday AM then
rise to 5000-5500 feet by Monday evening. Highest snow totals
should occur from near Highway 44 in western Lassen County
southward to Yuba Pass above 5000 feet, where 5-10 inches may
accumulate. A few light rain/snow showers may break into western
NV early Tuesday morning with minimal if any travel impacts.

Those heading over the Sierra and northeast CA passes Monday
afternoon into Tuesday morning should be prepared for slick roads
and travel delays. Wet roads can be just as problematic as snow
covered roads.

After this system passes, Wednesday and Thursday are favoring dry
and warmer conditions with highs in the 40s to low 50s. The next
system should approach the Pacific Northwest coast Thursday night
and Friday. Ensembles favor light rain/snow totals and gusty

VFR conditions today with any freezing fog in the northern Sierra
valleys dissipating by 18z.

Strong winds possible Monday into Tuesday morning. Winds aloft
increase today with mountain wave turbulence strengthening. Strong
surface gusts (40-60 kts) and LLWS will disrupt departures and
arrivals mid-day Monday into early Tuesday morning for the Tahoe

...Very Strong Winds and Mountain Snow Monday into Tuesday Morning...

* Our next winter system arrives Monday bringing the potential for
  damaging winds, mountain snow, and a few light valley rain and
  snow showers. This system is modest in terms of snowfall;
  however, travel difficulties with snow-covered roads and
  localized areas of blowing snow are still expected late Monday
  into Tuesday in the Sierra from Tahoe north, and for the passes
  of northeast California.

* Winds will increase by Monday afternoon for northeast
  California, the Tahoe Basin and western Nevada. There is the
  potential for gusts to exceed 80 mph for wind prone locations
  along the US-395 and I-580 corridor between Susanville and
  northern Mono County, in addition to the Surprise Valley, and
  far northern Washoe County near the Oregon border. Elsewhere,
  gusts of 30-50 mph are anticipated for valley locations, with
  Sierra ridge gusts exceeding 100 mph.

* Some tree falls and power outages are possible along with travel
  restrictions for high profile vehicles, and very rough air for
  aviators. Backcountry recreation and ski areas are likely to be
  impacted by the winds with very choppy lake conditions.
