.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Key Messages - Short Term:

1) Fire Weather: have expanded RFW to include Fremont county, N El
Paso county and SLV into the warning for Today.

2) Winds: Have upgraded to High Wind Warning for Eastern mtns and
immediate adjacent plains.

3) Winter Weather: Have upgraded to winter storm warning c mtns and
San Juan mtns; snow advisory for La Garitas

Currently...

A power-packed jet was pushing over the Pac NW early this AM and has
its eyes set for the southeast Colorado region.

Over the immediate region, a mild nite was ongoing as temps were in
the 30s and 40s across the plains and larger valleys, and single
digits and 10s over the higher mtns. variable mid/high clouds were
noted over a good part of the region. Some light showers were likely
occurring just to the NE of the fcst area in west central KS and
possibly along the CO/OK border.

Today...

Not much has changed in the fcst thinking for the short term. A very
kinematic jet with strong wind flow through the entire tropospheric
column will be affecting the region.

For today, the primary impact will be (once again) fire weather, and
a RED FLAG Warning is in effect for all of the plains, Fremont
county and the San Luis Valley. Although some llvl moisture recovery
has occurred over the plains, this moisture will mix out later today
and RH values will reach critical values over a good part of the
fcst area. Winds today will be SW over the mtns and valleys and
south to southwest over the plains. Winds will range from 15 to 25
mph with gusts in the 35 to 45 mph range.

Temps today will be several degrees warmer than yesterday, with
readings in the mid 60s to mid 70s.

Tonight...

The strong winds aloft move over the region. High wind warnings will
go into effect at 9 pm for all of the eastern mtns and wind prone
areas of the plains in the greater Walsenburg area. Winds of 50 to
80 mph will be likely over the higher terrain and 60 to 70 mph over
Huerfano county region. There will likely be a tight wind gradient
over Huerfano county with this event during the early morning hours
(The winds will push further out onto the plains after sunrise).
Other mountain regions will also see strong winds tonight, but
widespread high wind criteria is not expected at this time (this may
change in later fcst packages).

Snow will move into the contdvd region after sunset tonight, with
locally heavy amounts, especially in topographically favored areas
of the San Juans. \/Hodanish

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)

Key Messages:

1) Multiple days of Fire Weather Conditions are possible/likely
across southern Colorado, with Tuesday remaining the biggest concern
at this time.

2) A large storm system Tuesday will bring precipitation to the
mountains, and strong to severe winds for most of southern Colorado.

Tuesday... Tuesday will bring a day of multiple impactful weather
events to southern Colorado. The shorter range ensemble models, the
SREF and HREF, remain in strong agreement that a large trough will
pass over Colorado, leading to greater confidence in the evolution
of things. As the trough passes over the area, the core of the
system will stay well to the north of the forecast area, but the
southern periphery of the system, and the associated strong jet
stream, will pass right over the forecast area. As this part of the
trough pushes over the region, strong westerly winds will induce
robust orographic lift over the mountains, especially the central
and western mountains. Given this, precipitation in the form of snow
will develop over the mountain features. Most others within the
forecast area are expected to remain dry. Also with the stonger core
of the jet stream overhead, strong to severe winds will be present,
and are expected to become mixed down to the surface during the day.
The strongest winds will be along the mountains, especially the
eastern mountains. Winds in these areas will be gusting over 80kts.
Closer to the surface, widespread strong winds are expected,
especially across the eastern plains. Winds at lower elevations will
be gusting to 30-60kts. Trends in winds will still need to be
watched closely, as signals remain that winds could still be much
stronger, especially along the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains
area. With the strong winds in place, drier air aloft will also
become mixed down to the surface during the day, and RH values will
drop to around 10-15%, particularly across the eastern plains. With
the combination of strong winds and low RH values, another day of
Critical Fire Weather conditions is expected, but mostly across the
eastern plains.

Wednesday... The mid week period will continue to bring active
weather. The aforementioned trough will continue its trek eastward
during the day. With this, the stronger southern part of the system
will still be lingering over southern Colorado most of the day. This
will allow for orographics to persist over the mountains, but again,
mostly for the western and central mountains. Given that,
precipitation will remain over those areas most of the day, before
slowly dissipating from west to east late in the day as the main
system exits the area. There is a chance of light isolated to widely
scatted pockets of precipitation to develop/push off the mountains
during the afternoon as the trough axis pushes eastward. Closer to
the surface, a strong cold front will drop southward late Tuesday,
and temperatures will quickly drop throughout Wednesday in response
to this. Temperatures will likely be 10°-20° F below average for
this time of year. Also with the stronger winds aloft still passing
over southern Colorado, some of these will mix down to the surface
during the afternoon, but not to the extent they will Tuesday. Winds
will still be gusty though, with gusts around 20-40kts for most of
the forecast area. The strong winds will once again mix down drier
air as well during the day, dropping RH values. Though temperatures
will be cooler, gusty winds and low RH values may bring another day
of Critical Fire Weather conditions to southern Colorado. As the
system does exit the area late in the day, precipitation will
dissipate for all of the region, and winds will slowly become less
gusty.

Thursday - Sunday... Beyond the first couple of active days in the
long term period, a more quiet stretch of weather is expected. The
GEFS and EPS ensemble models are in agreement that an overall zonal
flow pattern will develop behind the strong system from earlier in
the week. This pattern will keep precipitation chances elevated
along the mountains, and especially for the central and western
mountains, but others are expected to remain dry. Temperatures will
also begin to slowly warm back closer to average for this time of
year, possibly even slightly above average. Also with this type of
pattern, more Critical Fire Weather conditions will be possible
across southern Colorado. There are signals that another wave will
pass over the area in the late Saturday to Sunday timeframe, which
would increase precipitation chances for the majority of the
forecast area, and cooler temperatures. Details about this feature
are still highly unclear, but it is something that could bring more
inclement weather.

VFR conditions are anticipated during the next 24 hours at all 3 taf
sites, KCOS, KPUB and KALS. However. Low Level Wind Shear will be a
significant concern later tonight at all the taf sites as very
strong winds throughout the tropospheric column move over the region
later tonight. These winds will likely mix down to the surface after
sunrise Tuesday, if not prior to sunrise. In the meantime (for
today). gusty south to southwest winds will occur at all 3 taf sites
from late morning into the early evening time period.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Tonight

An isolated thunderstorm or two will be possible over the far
eastern plains this evening. These storms may produce winds to 50
mph as well as some cloud to ground lightning.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Gusty winds and low relative humidity values will continue on
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, bringing multiple of days of likely
critical fire weather conditions across the I-25 corridor, San Luis
Valley, and parts of the eastern plains. The greatest day of concern
at this time is Tuesday.

Critical Fire Weather conditions remain possible Thursday through
Saturday over the San Luis Valley, the I-25 corridor, and the
eastern plains.

Precipitation chances and gusty winds will increase Monday through
Wednesday. The greatest chance of precipitation remains over the
mountains at this time. Snow is expected over the mountains and rain
at lower elevations at this time. Winds will increase in magnitude
start Monday afternoon, with the strongest winds expected Tuesday.

Weather conditions that meet reporting criteria for spotters will be
possible over the far eastern plains this evening.
