Area forecast discussion, Mar 20, 11:00 AM MDT, 4 hours before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 1100 AM MDT Sun Mar 20 2022 .UPDATE... Issued at 1003 AM MDT Sun Mar 20 2022 Quick update to grids to reflect current conditions. Latest high res data suggests portions of Pueblo, southern El Paso, Huerfano and Crowley counties could also see a period of Red Flag conditions this afternoon. Quick check of 7 day QPE indicates a pretty good swath of precipitation fell with our last event across southeast Pueblo, Crowley and Huerfano counties which is being leaned on heavily for status of fuels. El Paso county fuels status from last week indicated fuels were not yet critical either. Therefore will hold off on expansion of Red Flag conditions based on estimates that fuels for these western fringe zones near the current Red Flag warning area are not quite there. Either way, care should be taken to avoid fire starts this afternoon as lighter finer fuels (grasses) could carry fire. -KT && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 351 AM MDT Sun Mar 20 2022 ...Red Flag Warning Today... Currently... Mid level ridge was moving over the region at 3 Am this morning. Lots of mid/hi clouds within this ridge so quite a bit of cloudiness over the region attm. The combination of weak west to southwest winds over the plains along with lots of clouds was keeping temps up across the region, with lots of 40s noted over the plains. Over the San Luis Valley (SLV), temps were cooler, with readings in the 20s. Mtns were similar to the SLV, with lots of 20s noted. Weather system which promises to bring lots of winds and some precip to the region during the next few days was centered over the Los Angeles CA region. Today... Main concern for today will be RED FLAG conditions over a good part of the plains. Strongest winds, warmest temps and lowest RH values will generally reside east of a line from Eads to La Junta down to Trinidad., and likewise, this is where the current fire weather hilites are in effect. However, over the rest of the plains we will likely see near critical to critical at times fire weather conditions, so no burning is strongly suggested today over the plains. Winds gusting in the 20-30 mph range will occur in the COS to Walsenburg corridor, 25 to 35 mph in the KLHX to KTAD corridor and 35 to 45 mph range over the far eastern plains. Some blowing dust will be possible. As for precip, expect all of the fcst area to remain dry until after noon. Showers should move into the CONTDVD region during the later afternoon and evening time period. Plains should remain dry during the daylight hours. It will be warm today across the plains, with 60s over the divides and 70s along the Arkansas River Valley. Some readings in the mid 70s are likely. The SLV should see U50s while the mtns will be in the 20s and 30s. Tonight... Cold front associated with the strong trough moving towards the region will come down the plains tonight. Expect the front to come across the Palmer Divide around midnight and reach areas north of the CO/NM border prior to 6 am. Winds will pick up pretty strong from the north, with gusts to 25 to 35 mph likely well after fropa. Clouds will rapidly increase after fropa and expect rain and snow to develop over the higher elevations of the Pikes Peak region towards sunrise. The commute through the Gap area will be a bit tedious, but with roadways relatively warm, expect mostly wet pavement with restrictions to vis due to the snow over the Palmer Divide. Temps over the plains tonight will fall into the U20s by morning over the divides and into the 30s over the lower Ark Rvr Valley regions. Over the higher terrain, snow will be ongoing through the night. Accumulations should generally be in the 1 to 3 inch range. Some locally higher amounts may occur across the San Juans, especially during the first half of the night. .LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday) Issued at 351 AM MDT Sun Mar 20 2022 Key Messages... 1) Heaviest snow focused along the Raton Ridge and far southeastern plains. 2) Strong to potentially damaging winds also possible on Monday into Tuesday which will lead to areas of blowing snow affecting travel 3) Impacts could still occur across northern El Paso county in spite of trends towards lighter qpf and snow given potential for poor visibility in wind driven snow. A broad upper-level trough and associated low pressure system will move into our area starting on Monday and is expected to persist for several days. With this low will come a potent cold front, as well as increasingly strong, gusty winds over our eastern plains. Additionally, widespread precipitation is expected. Looking at timing, which has converged within model solutions over the last few days, precipitation (mainly snow) will begin over the Continental Divide early Monday morning, spreading east and then south across the rest of the area. The cold front will also push across the plains early in the morning, and high temperatures on Monday are expected to hang around the mid-upper 40s, nearly 20 degrees lower then Sunday. The tricky part with this system will be the placement and magnitude of precipitation. Once the front moves south, strong meridional winds will set up over our far eastern plains, clear up to around the 500mb level. Resulting upslope flow into parts of our southeast mountains, and especially the Raton Mesa, will result in the highest precipitation amounts in those areas. Total snowfall amounts have been decreasing in both deterministic and ensemble model trends over the last 24 hours, and as such have left our current Winter Storm Watch highlights unchanged. These variations come from model solutions placing the low pressure, and best available energy for producing heavier snowfall, just south and east of our area. So although the upper low is rather potent, and the longwave trough well-defined, best conditions for stronger winter storms will likely just miss us. However, depending on the upslope flow into the southern half of our CWA, some areas could be reaching snowfall amounts just shy of warning criteria. Current forecasted snowfall totals come out to 3-8 inches over the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Eastern San Juan Mountains, the Wet Mountains, as well as the Raton Mesa area. Parts of the northern Sangres, Continental Divide, and our far southeast plains could be seeing around 2-6 inches, with 2 inches or less expected over the rest of the CWA. This matches up well with current ensemble member predictions, with the EPS and GEFS members trending down today. However, a few isolated members still have higher amounts, with KTAD and KSPD being the stations to watch for locally higher amounts. These members catch on to the possibility of a heavier snowband setting up Monday across Las Animas and Baca Counties, which could result in amounts upwards of 10 inches, were such a band to develop and linger in the area. The low pressure passing through will also be carrying ample moisture, and the snow that does fall will likely be wet and heavy, further increasing potential impacts as well as imposing health hazards on the population. A secondary potential impact will come in the form of wind. A vast majority of the short-term guidance and ensemble data shows sustained winds of 25-30 knots possible both Monday and Tuesday afternoon across our southeast plains, with gusts in excess of 40 knots possible. Still below High Wind criteria, however with several inches of snowfall possible on the ground, rapid reductions to visibility could be an issue, specifically along southern I-25 and along highway 50. There does exist a lower, but non-zero chance for some impacts around the Palmer Divide and northern El Paso County as well, where gusty winds and blowing snow could result in hazardous travel. Current ensemble members from the EPS and GEFS are light in terms of snow accumulation, but some deterministic solutions peg parts of that area with 4-6 inches by Wednesday. The influence of the upper low and trough will kick east and out of our area by about Thursday, where a slightly calmer pattern will continue towards the end of the forecast period. A brief upper-level ridge is expected to build in starting Thursday, with temperatures beginning to rebound into the 60s. Looking at the long-term NBM solution, temperatures skyrocket by the start of next week, with some of the higher-percentile solutions putting high temperatures in the 80s-90s, but only time will tell. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon) Issued at 1051 AM MDT Sun Mar 20 2022 Increasing south to southwest winds will spread into all three terminals this afternoon with gusts to around 25 kts possible through early evening. Expect persistent mid/high cloudiness through the period. A cold front will drop southward through the plains spreading gusty north winds to 45 to near 50 kts for both KCOS and KPUB after 10-12z. -SHSN could spread into the KCOS terminal in the morning though think any vis restrictions will be limited to MVFR. KPUB could see some VCSH towards the tail end of the TAF period. KALS will see gusty northeast winds through La Veta Pass spread into the ALS terminal Monday morning. VCSH will be quick to follow with MVFR cigs. Snowfall totals at all three terminals should stay light with generally a trace to up to an inch at the heaviest through Monday afternoon. -KT && .PUB WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
