across the far southeast plains. Therefore have allowed the Red
Flag Warning to expire at 7 PM. -KT

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)

Key Messages:

1) Critical fire weather conditions are still expected across the
far eastern plains through early this evening.

2) Snow chances increase across the Continental Divide Wednesday
afternoon, with rain/snow approaching the Pike Peaks region very
late in the afternoon.

An abundance of sunshine along with weak upper ridging and a warming
air mass is supporting some warm temps in the 60s to around 70
across southern Colorado this afternoon. These temps along with
falling dewpoints today have supported low RH values in the 10 to 15
percent range over many areas this afternoon. The strongest winds
have remained confined to the far eastern plains though, where the
current Red Flag Warning is in effect. This trend looks to continue
through early evening, though do think occasional gusts will remain
possible elsewhere, especially along the I-25 corridor.

Upper trough will note some amplification as it draws near tonight
into Wednesday, as stronger jet and stronger vort max to the north
dive south. For tonight, this will mainly support increases in
mid/high clouds over much of the region with precip still not
expected. This cloud cover along with a cooling air mass will help
support lower temps on Wednesday, while precip chances begin to ramp
up across the Continental Divide. Do think snow will be possible in
the morning, but expect the more impactful snow across the
Continental Divide to occur later in the afternoon with the arrival
of the upper trough. This precip, in the form of rain and/or snow
will spread towards the Pikes Peak region very late in the
afternoon. Precip will be possible at this time, but expect the
highest chances to arrive more so by early in the evening, which
will be discussed in detail below.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday)

An active weather pattern will continue into early next week with
two storm systems impacting southern Colorado. This being
springtime, there is high uncertainty with precipitation type as
both systems move across the region. Both have the potential to
produce widespread moderate to heavy periods of rain for portions
of the lower elevations, along with snow for the Mountains.

Wednesday night through Thursday...a dynamic, quick moving upper
trough will shift eastward across southern Colorado through the
day on Thursday. This upper system will strengthen as it tracks
across northern New Mexico and into the southern Plains. Several
factors coming into play as this storm passes.

Over the Mountains, snow will develop by late afternoon into the
evening, mainly over the Central Mountains. Near steady light to
moderate snow is expected. Snowfall accumulations over the Central
Mountains will range in the 4 to 6 inch range. Snow should come to
an end mid mid day Thursday over the Central Mountains.

The track of the strengthening upper trough will develop a surface
low across the Plains. This will force flow easterly at the lower
levels, with 20 kts of easterly upslope flow at 700 mb. This will
lead to moderate to heavy precipitation across the Eastern
Mountains, into the I-25 corridor Wednesday night into Thursday
morning. The main issue will be precipitation type. Mountain
areas, mainly above 6500 feet will see snowfall. Accumulations
over the Rampart Range and Eastern Mountains could see 8 to 10
inches, with locally higher amounts.

Under 6500 feet, much will depend on rain and how long it takes to
change to snow. Cold air will slowly filter southward late
Wednesday night as the surface low ejects eastward and flow turns
northerly across the Plains. However, until this happens,
precipitation will likely remain rain through much of the
overnight hours. QPF amounts based on model projections show
widespread 1/2 inch totals, with some areas nearing 1 inch. This
is much needed precipitation! As we go through the overnight
hours, it will be a race between rain changing to snow, and the
loss of upslope flow. For areas in southern El Paso County,
including Colorado Springs, snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches
may be possible. Down in Pueblo, snow accumulations should
remain under an inch.

Focus will shift south on Thursday morning and clear the region by
Thursday afternoon. A few more inches of snow may be possible over
the southern Sangre de Cristo and Raton Mesa regions by mid-day.

For now, went with Winter Weather Advisories for the Central
Mountains, southeast into the Eastern Mountains. Issued Winter
Storm Watches for Teller and northern El Paso Counties, where
higher amounts are expected. The main uncertainty will be over
northern El Paso County and will depend highly on how quickly any
rain changes to snow.

Friday into Sunday...overall, dry and mild conditions are forecast
through the weekend. Temperatures will quickly warm from the 50s
on Friday into the 70s by Sunday. Southwesterly flow is forecast
to increase on Sunday afternoon, which may lead to near critical
fire weather conditions across the Plains.

Sunday night into Tuesday...the next upper level storm system is
poised to move across southern Colorado early next week. This
storm system has the potential to be a doozy for the region. There
is some uncertainty with storm track, with the GFS most favorable
for widespread heavy precipitation for southern Colorado, while
the ECMWF tracks the system a bit further south in southern New
Mexico. The GFS has deep, very moist upslope flow across Colorado
for a prolonged period of time. There could be a low threat for a
few thunderstorms Monday afternoon across the Plains, as dewpoints
are forecast to rise into the mid 40s. Heavy snow is possible over
the Mountains. Another period of lower elevation rainfall is also
likely. Given how far out this system is, much is sure to change.
But, it has the potential for significant impacts across southern
Colorado.  Mozley

VFR conditions will continue overnight tonight and into tomorrow
at KALS, KCOS, and KPUB. Mid-level clouds will increase
throughout, and by 00Z Thursday snow showers will approach all
three TAF sites. Currently there is low confidence on KALS being
directly impacted by precipitation, but confidence in KCOS and
KPUB seeing snow showers is increasing. Will have to worry about
low cigs and reductions to visibility, potentially reducing
conditions to MVFR or high-end IFR near the end of this forecast
period. Winds will also pick up from the NNW over the plains,
gusting up to around 20-25 knots.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

A storm system will move across the region late Wednesday and through
Thursday. This is expected to be accompanied by widespread
precipitation, with snow over the mountains and valleys, rain and
snow along the I-25 corridor, and mainly rain over the eastern
plains. Accumulating snow is likely over the mountains, especially
the southeast mountains. While more uncertain, areas of accumulating
snow may affect the I-25 corridor, especially southern portions and
also around the Palmer Divide.

A storm system may begin impacting parts of the region early next
week, and could be accompanied by multiple types of impactful
weather. There is significant uncertainty regarding this system
and potential impacts. Please continue to monitor the latest
information from the National Weather Service in Pueblo.
