Key messages: 1) Critical fire weather conditions are expected over portions of the I-25 corridor tomorrow afternoon. There could also be spotty areas over the far southeastern plains. 2) Noticeably warmer tomorrow, especially over the plains, with the downsloping winds being strong and gusty at times out of the southwest. Detailed discussion: Tonight... High pressure is continuing to build in over the region. There will be some areas of downsloping winds along the front range and this will keep mixing present in the PBL, so temperatures will only be bottoming out in the upper 20s and low 30s over these areas, otherwise temperatures in the plains will generally fall into the mid teens to low 20s for most locations. There will also be some increasing clouds which may slightly hinder radiational cooling for certain locations. Otherwise, temperatures will generally be in the single digits and teens for high country. Tomorrow... The approaching longwave trough upstream over the western CONUS with an associated major shortwave that is currently undergoing intensification will continue to propagate towards the region. As it does, there will be an increase of southwesterly winds ahead of it that will become downsloping and gusty by later in the morning. Due to this, with dry conditions and low relative humidity values over most of the plains, there will be areas of critical fire weather conditions, mainly along portions of the I-25 corridor and over the southeastern plains. The most likely areas for critical fire weather conditions will be over Huerfano County, as well as southern Pueblo, and northern Las Animas County, where gap flow winds will be the strongest. The humidity values will be in criteria over eastern Las Animas County, but winds could remain just below the threshold. However, given the min RH values at around 10 percent, it is still an area of concern. The downsloping winds will also result in very mild high temperatures for much of the plains and valleys. Some locations with the most proficient mixing in the PBL may see temperatures get up into the upper 60s. In the San Luis Valley and upper Arkansas River Valley, temperatures may also make it into the low 50s, and be around 15 degrees above the seasonal average for this time of year. Max temperatures for high country will generally be in the 20s and 30s. -Stewey .LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Saturday) Issued at 246 PM MST Sat Dec 10 2022 Models and ensembles continue to be in good agreement with the up coming winter storm system across the area, with higher spreads showing up for late in the forecast period. Overall, there has been a slight shift south in where the upper low is forecast to develop, which may mean better chances for snow on the Plains, and strong winds. Sunday night through Wednesday...models in good agreement with an upper low moving across Colorado and rapidly strengthening across the Eastern Plains into southern Nebraska. This low pressure center is forecast to rapidly intensify with snow potential and very strong winds likely during this period. Sunday night will see snow increasing along the Continental Divide, with periods of heavy snow by Monday morning. Areas of the San Juan Range will see the heaviest snowfall by morning. Lighter snowfall is expected over the La Garita Range, north into the Central Mountains. Dry conditions are expected on the Plains. On Monday, the upper low is forecast to progress into Utah with continued snow along the Continental Divide. Periods of heavy snow are likely, especially over the San Juan Range. Snow will continue along the whole Continental Divide, and spread east across the San Luis Valley into the Eastern Mountains through the afternoon. On the Plains, strong southwesterly flow and low humidity values will lead to elevated fire weather conditions Monday afternoon. Winds will be gusty, with many areas seeing gusts in excess of 30 mph. Humidity values will be the limiting factor, with min RH values in the upper teens. We will continue to monitor these elevated fire weather conditions. Afternoon highs on Monday will reach into the 50s and lower 60s on the Plains. The upper level low is forecast to rapidly strengthen Monday night into Tuesday morning as it moves into Eastern Colorado. The latest GFS, and to a lesser extent the ECMWF, have slightly shifted the storm track south which will likely have an impact on how far south snow falls. A strong cold front will arrive Monday evening, with strong northwesterly winds spreading south across the Plains. At this time, models are likely too light on wind speeds, as a majority of guidance has 700 mb winds 50 kts or more. If these winds can mix down as the surface low strengthens, near high wind criteria winds may be possible behind the cold front Monday night into Tuesday morning. Added blowing dust to the forecast for Monday and Monday night on the Plains. Cold air will advect quickly south behind the front with temperatures falling into the 20s by morning. Wind chills will make it feel much colder. The upper low will track slowly northeast into Central Nebraska on Tuesday. Expected wrap around precipitation to spread south along the Palmer Divide. While snow accumulations will only be around 1 to 3 inches, winds will cause widespread blowing and drifting of snow. These conditions may impact the morning commute over Monument Hill into Colorado Springs. The biggest question will be how far south snow falls. Given the lastest slight shift south in the upper storm track, this may allow for snow to spread south off the Palmer Divide, and across the Plains. Again, snow totals look to be light, with most areas seeing an inch or less. But winds will continue to be strong with areas of blowing snow likely. We will continue to monitor the model guidance and trends, as this storm has the potential to significantly impact the Pikes Peak region Tuesday morning into the afternoon. This storm may also cause impacts to the rest of the Plains. Wednesday into Saturday...the upper low will slowly shift northeast mid to late week, with cold northwesterly flow across Colorado. The ECMWF and Canadian for the most part are dry with only a few light snow showers over the Central Mountains. The GFS wants to drop a shortwave trough south across the state for late week, which would bring increased chances for snow. This solution however is an outlier. The main thing is, temperatures look to be cool, with 30s for highs each day heading into the weekend. Increasing winds, and warm and dry conditions ahead of the storm will bring the potential for critical fire weather conditions to the I-25 corridor on Sunday. Gusty winds and low relative humidity will lead to conditions favorable for rapid rates of fire growth and spread. Moderate to heavy snow and blowing snow will spread into the Continental Divide Sunday night, and into the western slopes and the crest of the southeast mountains on Monday. The heaviest snow will impact the eastern San Juan mountains where around a foot of accumulation will be possible. Lighter amounts will be likely across the remainder of the higher mountains, though blowing snow may result in poor visibilities at times and hazardous travel conditions. Strong west winds will spread across the plains on Monday with the potential for gusts of a 40 to 50 mph, especially south of highway 50. Areas of blowing dust and elevated fire danger will be possible across the southeast plains Monday afternoon. A strong cold front will bring a sharp wind shift from the north Monday night with the potential for at least 40 to 50 mph north to northwest winds on Tuesday behind the front. A brief round of snow may bring hazardous travel conditions to the Palmer Divide through Tuesday morning.
