What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter storm warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Pueblo, CO wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter storm warning went out at May 19, 11:21 AM MDT, 3 hours 32 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, May 19, 11:21 AM MDT, 3 hours 32 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pueblo CO
1121 AM MDT Thu May 19 2022

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 404 AM MDT Thu May 19 2022

Key Messages:

1) Widespread Critical Fire Weather Conditions Today.

2) Near Record Temperatures Today ahead of strong cold late Tonight.

Current water vapor imagery and upper air analysis is indicating
increasing westerly flow aloft across the region with shortwaves
embedded within the stronger zonal flow aloft across the Pacific
Northwest and Northern Tier at this time. Water vapor and satellite
imagery indicate ample moisture streaming across the Intermountain
West, with some wave clouds spreading across the Front Range at this
time. Temperatures as of 3 am remain on the mild side, with current
readings in the 50s across the plains and in the 30s and 40s across
the higher terrain.

The proverbial warm before the storm today, with increasing westerly
across the region, as short wave energy moving across the
Intermountain West continues to translate across the Northern
Rockies through tonight. Model soundings continue to indicate strong
mixing across the area this afternoon, bringing westerly winds of 20
to 30 mph and gusts to between 40 and 50 mph to all of south central
and southeast Colorado. These winds will also help to mix out the
low level moisture in place across the plains this morning, with min
rhs of 5 to 10 percent expected across the region this afternoon.
This again will lead to widespread critical fire weather conditions
across the area today, with only localized areas across the far
southeast plains seeing some beneficial rainfall last evening.
Current Red Flag Warning remains in tact from 11 am to 9 pm, with
caution is urged to prevent any fire starts today!

The warm start and mixing will also lead to near record temperatures
across the area today, with current records for May 19th of 82F at
ALS in 2008, 89F at COS in 2020 and 98F at PUB in 1974.

Breezy westerly winds to continue across the area into the overnight
hours, as one embedded shortwave translates across the Northern
Rockies. This passing system is expected to bring increasing
moisture into the Rockies, with a showers developing across the
higher terrain of northern and central mountains into early Friday
morning. The passing system will also send a strong cold front
across the eastern plains, with frontal passage across the Palmer
Dvd in the midnight to 3 am timeframe. Gusty northerly winds of 20
to 40 mph can be expected behind the front, along with stratus
spreading across northern portions of the southeast plains by
sunrise.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)
Issued at 404 AM MDT Thu May 19 2022

Key Messages:

1) Threat for late season snowstorm for Teller and El Paso
Counties continues.

2) Main impact from snowstorm could be heavy snow on leafed trees
resulting in broken limbs and power outages.

3) Concerns for freezing temperatures especially Saturday night.

.Friday and Saturday...Unseasonably cold airmass will move into
the region from the north on Friday bringing low level usplope to
the region. Starting midday Friday, anticipate precipitation to
begin mainly over Teller and El Paso Counties as the deeper cold
air and main trough move into the region. All the guidance and
ensembles are still pegging this region for a significant late
season snowstorm, and see no reason to change highlights at this
time. With heavier snowfall rates, suspect the roads will become
snow covered. Main concern may be for the heavy, wet snow on the
deciduous trees which have leafed out. There is the threat for
widespread limb damage with the potential for power outages.
Actual snow accumulations will be a challenge with the warm ground
and high sun angles. The snow will likely melt from below as it
is falling.

Friday evening, the cold air will push further south and a
weaker, secondary disturbance will move into the region. This will
be the period when the southern I25 corridor and southeast
mountains get snowfall, which will continue into the day Saturday.
Snowfall and QPF are not as impressive as further north with
amounts roughly a quarter to half an inch. There will be a drop
off in QPF towards the south and east. Locations along I25 near
the New Mexico border may not see much QPF and models have little
QPF over the eastern plains. A subtle shift in the storm track
could increase or decrease QPF over the southern and eastern
fringes of the area of heavier QPF. The passing trough will bring
over 6 inches of snow to the mountains of Lake and Chaffee
Counties and will issue a winter weather advisory.

.Sunday...Cold air mass remains over the region Saturday night
into early Sunday. Sunday morning could be quite chilly over the
region. The NBM grids, which is around the 50 percentile, have
near record lows for the KCOS and KPUB. The 25 percentile in the
NBM have lows in the mid 20s at these sites. Will have to watch
for the potential for a hard freeze Sunday morning. Lows will
depend on the amount of clearing and other factors. Another weak
disturbance will move over the region on Sunday brining the chance
for some showers and maybe a thunderstorm. Currently, the QPF
looks to be light.

.Monday and Tuesday...The models and ensembles have generally
been trending stronger with the trough on Monday into Tuesday. The
current QPF grids have around a quarter to half an inch of
additional QPF during this period. QPF may be higher near the
southeast corner of the state as southerly flow may bring more
moisture into this area.

.Wednesday...Models and ensembles have a warming and drying trend
as an upper ridge moves into the region. There may be enough
moisture for some diurnal convection. Currently, looks like
convection will be higher based with generally modest QPF.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon)
Issued at 1117 AM MDT Thu May 19 2022

VFR conditions expected at all TAF stations, KALS, KCOS and KPUB,
for most of the forecast period. KCOS is expected to have borderline
MVFR to IFR conditions late in the forecast period around 17Z due to
predicted rain showers in the area, which is expected to turn to
snow later that evening. Winds at KALS expected to be gusty mainly
out of the southwest for the whole forecast period, except for a
brief wind shift to the southeast around 12Z. KCOS will start out
gusty out of the southwest shifting to the northwest around 02Z,
then eventually shifting to the southeast around 13Z, becoming gusty
again at 17Z in the vicinity of rain showers. KPUB will start out
gusty from a westerly component, shifting to an easterly component
around 09Z with a couple of brief breaks from the gusts. - Riser

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Widespread critical fire weather conditions are expected across
all of south central and southeast Colorado today, as westerly
winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts between 40 and 50 mph spread
across the area through the early evening. These strong winds,
combined with near record warm temperatures, low humidity values
and persistent dry conditions, will create conditions favorable
for extreme fire behavior, with rapid rates of growth and spread,
should a fire start. Please use extreme caution to avoid any fire
starts today.

A passing weather system across the northern Rockies tonight will
bring chances for snow showers across the higher terrain of the
central mountains later tonight. This system will also send a strong
cold front across the eastern plains early Friday morning

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

A late season snowstorm is possible midday Friday through
Saturday. The best chances for significant snow accumulations are
in Teller and northern El Paso Counties. Significant snowfall is
also possible for Lake County and the mountains of Chaffee
County. Some snow accumulations are possible over the eastern
mountains and Interstate 25 corridor with snow levels lowering to
around 5500 feet.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Weather conditions that meet reporting criteria for spotters will
be possible over portions of the region.
