&&

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 359 AM MST Wed Feb 2 2022

...Snow, some heavy in some areas, is expected through today,
decreasing this evening. Cold temps to continue the next 24 hours...

Currently...

as of 3 AM, widespread light snow was falling over nearly all of the
region per sfc obs and radar interpretation. The heaviest snow per
radar, appeared to be occurring over the plains north of US 50 and
east east of KLHX as solid 30+ dbz echoes were occurring over these
locations. Another area which was likely receiving very heavy snow
was the greater La Veta pass region. This region has been showing
very impressive radar returns (from KPUX and the Alamosa Doppler)
throughout the early morning hours. I am confident this area has
easily received over a foot of snow, if not 2 feet, per the radar
obs. Heavy snow, per radar perspective, was likely also occurring
along and just to the east of the Wet mtns and the remainder of the
Sangre De Cristo mtns. Localized heavy snow showers were noted per
the Alamosa Doppler over the San Luis valley and over the southern
San Juans.

Synoptically...

Broad 500 mb trough axis at 3 AM extended from central WY, into UT,
and then into northwest AZ. This trough axis was pushing slowly
east. Per water vapor analysis, the drier air behind the trough axis
was noted over NW CO and extended back towards Las Vegas. Areas east
of this line showed a very favorable moisture profile on all of the
water vapor channels, along with a favorable IR signature of cold
cloud tops moving across our cst area.

Today...

Overall, through today, the best synoptic forcing is likely going
to occur over the far eastern plains and expect this area to see
locally moderate to heavy snow at times this morning lasting into
afternoon. The remainder of the plains will be under favorable
upslope flow (along with favorable warm air advection at 700 mb)
through early afternoon. At this time I do not see the potential for
heavier snow along the I-25 corridor, but light snow will likely
persist through the morning and into the early afternoon. By late
this afternoon, the winds at 700 weaken, and shift to a more weak
southwesterly flow by evening. This should allow the snow to
decrease with time over the plains (except far eastern plains).

If the snow over the I-25 corridor does indeed remain light, then
current hilites may need to be downgraded. I plan to let the day
crew get a reassessment of the data and allow them to make any
necessary adjustments to the winter weather hilites.

As for the eastern mtns, favorable orographic forcing will continue
through the day and moderate to locally heavy snow will continue
into mid to late afternoon (especially over the greater La Veta Pass
region). Snow will continue on and off over the San Luis Valley and
over the San Juans today.

As for temps today, it is going to be cold all areas with max temps
mainly in the teens to L20s over the plains and San Luis Valley. The
warmest area will likely be the southern SLV as temps will be in the
M20s this location. Mtns will be very cold (due to impressive lapse
rates) and expect temps at mtn top level this afternoon to be in the
negative 10s.

Tonight...

Snow will be ongoing over the southern San Juans, southern San Luis
valley and the far southeastern plains early this evening and will
come to an end by late evening. Most, if not all, of the snow should
be done with by midnight.

With clouds slow to dissipate, expect temps to drop into the zero to
negative 5 degree values over the plains. These values would have
the potential to drop much further if skies were to clear. The SLV
should see mins in the -10 to -15 F range. Temps of -15 to -25 will
occur in teh mtns and very high valleys. \/Hodanish

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)
Issued at 359 AM MST Wed Feb 2 2022

...A Warming trend into the Weekend...

Thursday-Friday...Cold upper trough continues to translate east
across the High Plains through the day Thursday, with moderate
northerly flow aloft progged across the Rockies through the day
Thursday, which becomes more west to northwest Friday and Friday
night ahead of another upper trough translating across the Northern
Tier. While can't rule out some light snow/flurries across the
southern tier of Colorado early Thursday morning, should see slowly
clearing skies through the morning and early afternoon, with expected
subsidence behind the passing system, leading to mostly sunny skies
through the afternoon. Cold ambient temperatures in the single digits
above and below zero across the plains, and in the single digits to
teens below zero across the higher terrain. While winds are expected
to be generally light across the area on Thursday, with the cold
ambient temperatures, wind chills of 15 to 25 below zero will be
possible across the plains early Thursday morning, with colder wind
chills possible across the higher terrain.

Temperatures will be slow to warm on Thursday, with fresh snow cover
and expected strong surface based inversions leading to highs mainly
in the teens to lower 20s across the all of south central and
southeast Colorado. Another cold night remains on tap for Thursday
night, with lows in the single digits above and below zero across
the plains, and in the single digits to teens below zero across the
higher terrain, though should see temperatures warming along the
lower eastern slopes into Friday morning, as northwesterly downslope
develops. This will lead to highs warming into the 20s and 30s
through the day Friday, though did lower highs a tad across the
plains with expected melting of snow.

Saturday-Sunday...Moderate west to northwest flow progged across the
region on Saturday becomes more northerly Saturday night and Sunday,
as the aforementioned Northern Tier upper trough continues to
translate across the Northern Rockies and into the Upper Midwest.
Models continue to trend drier with the passing system, though can
rule out a few flurries across the higher terrain Saturday and
Saturday night. Otherwise, breezy westerly winds will help
temperatures to warm back to around seasonal levels on Saturday,
with slightly cooler temperatures expected on Sunday behind the
passing systems dry cold front.

Monday-Wednesday...Upper level ridging remains progged to develop
across the West Coast and push across the Great Basin and into the
Rockies into early next week. Models continue to differ on timing
and location of short waves embedded within the faster zonal flow
across the Northern Tier, which looks to eventually break down the
ridge as northwest flow aloft develops across the Rockies into the
middle of next week. With that said, the latest NBM data indicates
dry and warm weather into early next week, with highs warming back
to at above seasonal levels in the 50s to lower 60s across the
plains, and mainly in the 30s and 40s across the higher terrain.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Thursday afternoon)
Issued at 1037 AM MST Wed Feb 2 2022

KALS: LIFR conditions will continue for the next few hours as
slightly heavier snow bands set up near the terminal. Once these
disperse, light snow showers and IFR conditions will continue the
rest of the day, moving away from the TAF site by around 05Z
tonight, although overcast skies and MVFR cigs will likely continue.
With the snow accumulation from this system, favorable conditions
for fog will set in over the terminal during the overnight hours
into tomorrow morning, the exact details of which will become more
apparent later this afternoon.

KCOS: Light to moderate snow will continue over the terminal the
rest of today, limiting flight category to IFR through about 03Z
this evening. Snow will lighten into the early overnight hours, with
MVFR improving to VFR by 06Z. Otherwise, low-level clouds and some
stratus will persist in the area, slowly thinning out into tomorrow
morning.

KPUB: Light snow and limited vis will persist with IFR conditions
through around 02Z this evening, with low level clouds slowly
decreasing overnight into tomorrow. Will have to keep an eye on the
potential for fog very early tomorrow morning.
