.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 352 AM MDT Sun May 29 2022

Key Messages:

1) Critical Fire Weather conditions expected over the plains and San
Luis Valley (SLV) today.

2) Some light high elevation snow over most of the mountains next 24
hours.

3) Isolated lightning flashes over the high country today could
cause new fire starts.

4) Quite windy today.

Currently...

A cool front was pushing down the plains at 3 AM this morning and
was moving down the Palmer Divide. Over the mountains, a disturbance
over western CO was moving east. A band of showers was associated
with this disturbance and was moving over the CONTDVD. This
disturbance was associated with a rather strong jet that was
moving eastward into the central rockies.

Today...

The primary concern today will be critical fire weather conditions
developing over parts of the area. It will become windy ALL areas
today, however critical RH values are only likely to occur over the
San Luis Valley and over the plains. RH values today will not be as
low as yesterday, but will still reach into the critical 10 to 15%
range where the Red Flag Warning is in effect.

Over the high terrain, gusty winds will begin to increase at higher
elevations early this morning and will gradually increase in speed
all areas as the morning progresses. By afternoon, wind gusts to 45
to 55 mph will be possible in all of the mountains with 35 to 45 mph
gusts in the valleys.

Over the plains, the wind pattern will be complicated by the front
that is working its way south early this AM. This boundary will
likely reach down to the US50 corridor by noontime and then rapidly
lift north by early afternoon. For this morning, areas south of the
boundary will likely see a westerly component to the wind field,
with winds speed gradually increasing with time. Areas north of
the boundary will likely see an easterly component to the wind
field. As mentioned above, this boundary will lift quickly north
by early afternoon, and ALL areas of the plains will see west to
southwest winds, with wind speeds in the 1 to 25 mph with gusts to
40 mph. Stronger winds will likely be felt over the Huerfano
county wind gap areas and across Baca county, were gusts to 50 mph
will be possible.

As for precip, the showers over the CONTDVD early this AM will
continue to push eastward and expect showers with some rumbles of
thunder over all of the CONTDVD region by noon time. This precip
will slowly push eastward, with the leading edge reaching the
Palmer Divide by late afternoon, with activity over the Sangres
and parts of the San Luis Valley. The plains south of US50 and
east of I-25 should remain dry today. The overall best chance of
precip will be over the central mountains where the chance of
precip is in the likely category. Accumulating very high
elevations snow is likely, especially over the central mountains.

Temperatures today over the mountains, especially the CONTDVD region
will be noticeably cooler today, while over the plains temperatures
will be 3 to 6F cooler than yesterday.

Tonight...

Cooler temperatures will move into all of the region. Precipitation
will mainly continue over areas where it was falling during the late
afternoon time period, although it will be decreasing during the
early morning hours. A cool front will move across over nearly all
of the region during the early morning hours. Temperatures by
sunrise will be in the 40s and 50s over the plains and 30s in the
larger valleys. 20s and 30s will occur over the mtns. It will still
remain quite breezy over the mountain tops, with a steady westerly
component to the wind field being noted over the remainder of the
forecast area.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)
Issued at 352 AM MDT Sun May 29 2022

Big differences are seen between the various operational model
solutions through the extended period, with ensemble spreads
showing up by Tuesday, and increasing through next weekend.
Overall, the confidence in the extended forecast is low.

Monday...an upper trough is forecast to retrograde west across
Utah and back into Nevada on Monday. This will keep strong west to
southwest flow across southern Colorado. Dry air and strong winds
will spread widespread critical fire weather conditions across
much of southern Colorado for Monday afternoon and evening.
Humidity values will fall to near 10 percent for the San Luis
Valley and much of southeast Colorado along with winds gusting 30
to 40 mph. A Fire Weather Watch remains in effect for much of the
region. Afternoon high temperatures will into the 70s and 80s for
the lower elevations. A few showers and thunderstorms are possible
through Monday evening from the La Garita range, north into the
Central Mountains and Palmer Divide as weak energy lifts across
the state. Snow should remain confined to elevations above 11 kft,
where an inch may be possible.

Tuesday into Thursday...the upper low over northern Nevada is
forecast to eject east across Utah and Colorado through the middle
part of the week. The GFS weakens the system as it passes with not
much in the way of precipitation for much of southern Colorado.
The ECMWF on the other hand is deeper and slower with the system,
with widespread moderate the heavy precipitation spread over the
Plains for much of this period. The Canadian is in the middle
bringing some precipitation to southern Colorado, but not as much
as the ECMWF. Ensemble spreads during this period begin to
diverge, leading to lower confidence.

Current thinking...a cold front will drop south over the Plains
Monday night, with cool, upslope flow spreading across the region
Tuesday. This would likely lead to showers and thunderstorms along
the Eastern Mountains and Palmer Divide, much like the NAM is
showing. The GFS keeps a majority of the precipitation on Tuesday
to the north, limiting it to the Palmer Divide. The GFS, being
weaker and more progressive, quickly lifts the upper trough into
Nebraska, and taking any precipitation with it. The ECMWF, keeps
moist low level upslope flow across southeast Colorado, with
widespread, heavy showers and thunderstorms Tuesday into
Wednesday, before clearing on Thursday.

Overall, temperatures will be much cooler through the middle of
the week, with 70s on Tuesday, falling into the 60s on Wednesday.
Temperatures should begin to rebound back into the 70s on
Thursday.

Friday through Sunday...very messy flow setting up for the end of
the week into the weekend with high ensemble spreads and little
agreement from the operational solutions. Temperatures look to
warm back through the 80s through this period for afternoon highs.
The GFS wants to develop a dryline on the Plains Friday afternoon
with a few strong thunderstorms near the Kansas border. The most
likely scenario will be low chances for daily showers and
thunderstorms. Mozley

Issued at 1042 AM MDT Sun May 29 2022

A weather disturbance will spread strong gusty southwest winds
into the terminals with gusts to 30 to 40 kts possible this
afternoon. High based showers will spread off the mountains late
this afternoon through early evening bringing the possibility of
localized west to northwest winds gusting to near 50 kts for both
KCOS and KPUB in the vicinity of these high based showers. Timing
of this wind shift and gusts is in the 23z through 02z window for
KCOS and KPUB. Showers are less likely across the San Luis Valley
today, but VCSH and erratic west to northwest winds could spread
off into the KALS terminal after 02z. Cigs will stay VFR with
these. Clearing takes place after 06z with elevated northwest
winds at KCOS and KPUB overnight in the 10-20 kt range. KALS will
see southerly winds under 15 kts overnight. -KT

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Critical fire weather conditions are expected to occur across the
San Luis valley, the central Arkansas River Valley of Fremont
county and all of the southeast plains.

Accumulating snow will be possible over the highest elevations
along the Continental Divide, especially across the central
mountains. Up to 4 inches will be possible above 11000 feet.

A few thunderstorms will be possible over the mountains, and
possibly northern El Paso county this afternoon and evening.
These may be accompanied by gusty winds up to 55 mph but little
rainfall for the lower elevations. Some small hail, ice pellets,
or heavy snow bursts will be possible across the higher elevations
of Chaffee and Lake counties the northern Sangre De Cristo
mountains and Pikes Peak through this evening.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

A few light snow showers will be possible from the La Garita
range, north into the Central Mountains above 11000 feet through
Monday. An inch may be possible. Isolated thunderstorms may be
possible over the Palmer Divide Monday afternoon and evening.
Widespread critical fire weather conditions are expected Monday
afternoon and evening due to lower humidity values and gusty
winds for the San Luis Valley and all of the Eastern Plains.

Critical fire weather conditions are expected Tuesday over the San
Luis Valley due to low humidity values and gusty winds.

Showers and thunderstorms are possible Tuesday through Saturday
across the region. A few may become strong on Friday afternoon
near the Kansas border.

Weather conditions that meet reporting criteria for spotters will
be possible over the mountains this afternoon and tonight.
