.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday)
Issued at 307 PM MDT Thu May 26 2022

Key Messages:

1) Isolated thunderstorms, one or two possibly strong, are expected
across the eastern plains tomorrow.

2) Critical Fire Weather conditions are expected across the San Luis
Valley and western mountains tomorrow.

3) Much above average temperatures expected across southern Colorado
tomorrow.

Tonight... Overnight will remain relatively quite across southern
Colorado. A ridge of high pressure will continue to trek eastward
overnight. This feature will increase the synoptic subsidence across
the region. Given this, the forecast area is expected to stay dry
and have mostly clear skies. There will be weak pockets of vorticity
drifting within the flow, and will allow for modest synoptic ascent
to take place. This will allow for scattered high level cirrus
clouds to materialize over the area throughout the night.
Temperatures will be near to slightly above average for most across
southern Colorado. The plains will drop into the upper 40s to mid
50s, the valleys cooling into the mid 30s to low 40s, and the
mountains falling into the 30s.

Tomorrow... Friday will bring an uptick in active weather for the
region, with chances of thunderstorms and Critical Fire Weather
conditions. The short range ensemble models, such as the HREF and
SREF, are in good agreement that the aforementioned ridge will
continue its push eastward, and behind it, a subtle short wave
trough will push across the Colorado area. This wave will bring a
modest increase in synoptic dynamics and winds aloft. The stronger
winds aloft will induce better orographic forcing over the
mountains, especially across the eastern mountains; this will be the
primary trigger for thunderstorms during the afternoon. Also with
the short wave passing over, bulk shear will see a small uptick,
with 0-6km shear around 25 kts, which allow for multicell storm
organization. Moisture will be relatively low, with dew points only
around 30, which is supported in the HREF and SREF models. This will
limit the overall amount of instability present during the
afternoon, with MLCAPE around 500 J/kg. With the low moisture
content and hot temperatures expected, modeled soundings show large
inverted-v structures in their thermodynamic profiles. Given this,
DCAPE values will be around 1800 J/kg. With the parameters in place,
isolated thunderstorms, one or two possibly strong, are expected to
bloom over the eastern mountains by mid afternoon and push off
eastward during the day. While storms will interact with the
"better" moisture at lower elevations, it will still be limited and
storms will be elevated in nature. Given the modest MLCAPE, but high
DCAPE values, the biggest threats from these storms will be
lightning and strong downdraft winds around 40-50kts. One other
thing to note about these storms, because of the limited moisture
content, very little precipitation is expected to reach the ground.
As storms push across the eastern plains, CAPE values are expected
to wane and the nightly inversion will develop, and with that,
thunderstorms are expected to dissipate by the time they reach the
Colorado and Kansas border during the evening. Other than storms
tomorrow, Critical Fire Weather conditions are expected too, but
primarily over the San Luis Valley and La Garita and San Juan
mountains. As flow aloft increases from the short wave, stronger
winds will become mixed down to the surface, and winds will be
gusting to around 25-35kts. These winds will also mix down drier air
to the surface, and given the expected warm temperatures, RH values
will fall; the lowest RH values will be within the San Luis Valley,
in the single digits, with RH increasing across the higher
elevations to around 15-20%. Given the combination of gusty winds
and low RH, Critical Fire Weather conditions are expected across
these areas during the afternoon, as they've seen little
precipitation over the last week. Otherwise across southern
Colorado, most are expected to be dry and windy, and have much above
average temperatures. Temperatures will be 15-20°F above average,
with the plains warming into the upper 80s to mid 90s, the valleys
reaching into the mid 70s to mid 80s, and the mountains rising into
the mid 50s to low 60s.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Thursday)

Friday Night and Saturday..

Fire weather concerns look to be more widespread on Saturday, with
critical wind and humidity thresholds being met from about 10am
through 10pm across the entire forecast area. The most critical
places will be the San Luis Valley and the Eastern San Juans, where
we've seen very little precipitation lately. For this reason, a Fire
Weather Watch has been hoisted for Saturday afternoon in those
areas. Though critical meteorological conditions for fire weather
highlights will likely be met in other areas east of the Wets and
Sangres, current thinking is that well above average amounts of
recent precipitation may mitigate the fire weather risk for our
plains on Saturday for now. Continued reevaluation of fuel status
may necessity eventual issuance of fire weather highlights. Daytime
highs will be about 10 to 15 degrees above average for this time of
year, but we look to stay about 4 or 5 degrees below any records for
forecast daytime highs on Saturday afternoon. Winds will gust out of
the west-southwest for most of the day at about 35-45 mph.

Sunday and Monday..

The GEFS and and EPS both bring the next system southeastward from
the Pacific Northwest into the Great Basin throughout Sunday and
Monday, with the 500mb low digging down into Utah by Monday evening.
With this placement, most of the available moisture stays off to our
north and west. We could see some showers and thunderstorms in our
central mountains, but dryline thunderstorm activity on Monday
afternoon appears to stay on the Kansas side of our eastern border.

Even with the possibility of showers and thunderstorms in our
mountains, critical fire weather conditions will likely continue for
the San Luis Valley into the middle of next week, with strong
westerlies on Sunday and southwesterlies on Monday. Potential fire
starts from lightning in the mountains will need to be monitored
closely through this period as well.

Tuesday through Thursday..

Ensembles start to deviate on timing during this period, but the
general consensus is to keep us fairly dry as this system weakens
somewhat and pushes off to our northwest. The main cold front looks
to finally pass through sometime early Wednesday, when we could see
some better chances for precipitation and even some upslope moisture
through Wednesday and into Thursday. Bouts of northerly winds should
help with fire weather concerns during this timeframe as well.

central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

No hazardous weather is expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

On Friday, a few thunderstorms will be possible over the
mountains in the afternoon and over the plains during the evening,
with the chance of a strong storm or two generally east of I-25
and north of Highway 50. Main threat will be strong gusty winds,
and there could be some small hail. Marginally critical fire
weather conditions are expected over the San Luis Valley and
southwestern mountains during the afternoon and early evening
hours.

On Saturday and through Monday, there will be more widespread
fire weather conditions across the San Luis Valley and higher
terrain. Thunderstorms and some high elevation snow will be
possible over the northern central mountains late Saturday evening
though Monday, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours.
Little to no snow accumulations are anticipated. Critical fire
weather conditions will be possible over the San luis Valley, and
areas of the plains.

On Tuesday through Wednesday, scattered strong to severe
thunderstorms will be possible over the far eastern plains late
Tuesday evening. Main threat would be strong and gusty outflow
winds, and large hail. More marginal thunderstorms will be
possible over the mountains and along the I-25 corridor late
Tuesday through Wednesday morning. Critical fire weather
conditions will be possible in the San Luis Valley for both days.
