.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Strong warming trend begins today, as upper level ridge builds over
the southern Rockies. Mid level temps rise to around 10c across the
plains by afternoon, suggesting maxes back into the 80s at most
locations east of I-25, while 70s/80s are widespread over the
mountains and interior valleys. Ridge overhead should keep winds on
the light side, with diurnal upslope/upvalley breezes from midday
into early evening. Overnight, ridge drifts slowly eastward, with
weak lee trough along I-25 and some minor stirring of downslope
winds over eastern mountain slopes. Min temps will continue around
seasonal averages, though usual downslope warm pockets will stay
mild into Fri morning.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

Key messages:

1) Ridge will move over the region with warmer and drier conditions.
This will lead to critical fire weather conditions for the
southwestern mountains and San Luis Valley for Friday afternoon and
early evening.

2) Also on Friday, a few thunderstorms will be possible over the
mountains (mainly the eastern mountains) during the afternoon and
over the adjacent plains during the early evening.

3) Some strong to severe thunderstorms may occur over the far
eastern plains late Tuesday. Main threat would be large hail
potentially damaging winds.

4) Critical fire weather conditions look to be possible everyday
during the afternoon and early evening hours for the San Luis
Valley and over some of the higher terrain from Saturday through
Wednesday.

5) Depending on the placement of a low pressure system early next
week, it may result in either enhanced fire weather conditions,
and/or a beneficial amount of precipitation for much of southeast
Colorado late Tuesday and into Wednesday morning as a front moves
through over the plains.

Detailed discussion:

Friday though Saturday afternoon...

A ridge will continue to propagate over the region through Saturday.
This will allow for temperatures to continue to warm up
significantly and back into the low 90s for many locations of the
lower Arkansas River Valley by Friday. There looks to be an
perturbation in the longwave trough upstream over the NW CONUS that
will pass over the region by later in the day on Friday. With just
enough mid level moisture and forcing with this wave, and also
induced through orographic lifting, there could be a few
thunderstorms developing over the mountains during the afternoon.
These will likely move out over the adjacent plains later in the
evening given the westerly flow at the 700 mb level. The GFS still
continues to be a more aggressive model, but the ECMWRF is now
displaying a higher amount of precip in the latest model run than
previous runs. The NAM12 is fairy dry in comparison. Most of the
model data suggests that a majority of the convection is going to
be more confined to the northern mountains and Palmer Divide area.
Given how dry the lower levels appear to be when looking at
soundings with an inverted V profile, these looks to be very high
based storms with mainly virga and possible dry microbursts
associated with them. Saturday will be even warmer with the
downsloping west-southwesterly winds across the plains, with areas
of the eastern plains reaching into the mid to upper 90s. Due to the
adiabatically drying and warming nature of these southwesterly winds
over the southwestern mountains and San Luis Valley, critical fire
weather conditions look to be possible during the afternoon and
early evening hours.

Saturday evening through Monday...

Models are still holding true to the propagation of a longwave
trough upstream towards the region, which will begin a gradual
cooldown. However, due to the orientation of the trough with a
southwesterly flow in the low to mid levels, there will be continued
fire weather concerns over the San Luis Valley and southwestern
mountains as well as the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, mainly below
10000 ft. Depending on whether green-up initiates or not will also
determine whether the plains are impacted by fire weather conditions
as well. The will be some higher elevation snowfall and a chance of
thunderstorms over the northern mountains by later in the evening
on Saturday and continuing into Monday. Winds will remain strong
and gusty out of the SW direction for a majority of the CWA, but
as far as precip is concerned, most of the deterministic models
and ensembles keep the brunt of the moisture north of the CWA.
These drier conditions may enhance the critical fire weather
threat.

Tuesday through Wednesday...

The models start to deviate more at this time in the forecast period
with respect to the progression of the longwave trough and the
associated major shortwave. The GFS continues to have the low
meandering back a little further to the west than the ECMWF and
Canadian, although there is not as much of a negatively tilted axis
as previous models suggested. Also, the dryline ahead of the trough
has been displaced further to the east now and almost right along
the CO/KS border. Due to this, the potential of severe thunderstorms
might remain just outside of the CWA on Tuesday afternoon/evening.
Frontal passage from this low pressure system looks to occur
sometime in the early morning on Wednesday over the plains.
Depending on which model verifies better will determine if other
areas of the CWA are going to receive some precip by late in the
evening on Tuesday, with higher confidence that most areas over the
plains will have a chance of measurable precip going into the
morning of Wednesday. With the continued SW'ly flow over high
country, fire weather concerns are going to continue to be an issue,
however, the northerly winds will bring some relief with cooler
temperatures and mitigate the fire weather concerns for the plains
with temperatures being slightly below the seasonal average.  -Stewey

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

On Friday, a few thunderstorms will be possible over the
mountains in the afternoon and over the plains during the evening,
with the chance of a strong storm or two generally east of I-25
and north of Highway 50. Main threat will be strong gusty winds,
and there could be some small hail. Marginally critical fire
weather conditions are expected over the San Luis Valley and
southwestern mountains during the afternoon and early evening
hours.

On Saturday and through Monday, there will be more widespread
fire weather conditions across the San Luis Valley and higher
terrain. Thunderstorms and some high elevation snow will be
possible over the northern central mountains late Saturday evening
though Monday, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours.
Little to no snow accumulations are anticipated. Critical fire
weather conditions will be possible over the San luis Valley, and
areas of the plains.

On Tuesday through Wednesday, scattered strong to severe
thunderstorms will be possible over the far eastern plains late
Tuesday evening. Main threat would be strong and gusty outflow
winds, and large hail. More marginal thunderstorms will be
possible over the mountains and along the I-25 corridor late
Tuesday through Wednesday morning. Critical fire weather
conditions will be possible in the San Luis Valley for both days.
