Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 429 AM MDT Sun May 8 2022 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 427 AM MDT Sun May 8 2022 Key Messages: 1) EXTREME critical fire weather conditions expected in our area today, with the entire CWA under a Red Flag Warning. 2) Strong winds will persist across most of the area, starting this afternoon and lasting into Monday. 3)Periods of blowing dust will be possible today over the San Luis Valley and parts of the eastern plains. Southwesterly flow aloft will continue to strengthen today and tonight as the upper-level jet continues to move in over our area. RH will be dismally low once again, mostly in the single digits to low teens across the entire area. A Red Flag Warning is in effect starting at 11am over our entire CWA. Our more extreme weather risk for the day will be winds. Models have been differing somewhat on the magnitude of the winds in the jet maximum over us, and how much of that stronger energy will be mixing down towards the surface. The GFS and NAM both show winds upwards of 80 knots or more at 700mb, and with the mechanical energy in place from the strength of the winds at higher levels, strong winds are expected to make it down towards the surface over large parts of our area. A High Wind Warning will go into effect over parts of our western CWA, starting with the San Luis Valley and followed by the Wet and Sangre de Cristo Mountains and adjacent lower elevations, including southern I- 25. Sustained winds will be from the southwest, reaching upwards of 30-35 knots, with gusts up to around 50 knots. The higher elevations will experience stronger winds, with gusts upwards of 70-80 knots possible tonight. With the dry conditions in place, periods of blowing dust could also result in travel impacts this afternoon, mainly over the SLV and parts of the southeast plains. The winds will continue tonight, with the strong upper jet forcing mechanical mixing to overcome the decoupling of the boundary layer. The High Wind Warning will go through tonight and into tomorrow, and have also hoisted a High Wind Watch over Fremont, Teller, and El Paso Counties to account for the potential for stronger gusts. Current SPC outlook places our entire CWA within the CRITICAL fire weather outlook, while a portion of our area, including our southeast mountains and adjacent eastern plains, are within the EXTREME category. Today and tonight are going to be volatile and potentially extremely dangerous, with regards to fire weather and high winds. If a fire does start, conditions will support rapid spread and intensification, and with the high winds in place fires could burn out of control very quickly. Extreme caution is advised, and avoid ANYTHING that could start a fire! .LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday) Issued at 427 AM MDT Sun May 8 2022 Key Messages: 1) Damaging winds continue through midday Monday, quite possibly well into the afternoon for the higher terrain and San Luis Valley. 2) High fire danger continues Monday across all of south central and southeast Colorado, with no change Tuesday through Thursday and likely Friday. 3) Thunderstorm development possible over the far eastern plains Wednesday, with a lower chance for the same area on Thursday. A very active period in terms of well above normal temps with high fire danger, damaging winds with blowing dust, and possible thunderstorm development across much of southern Colorado expected through late in the work week. At the start of the period, very strong flow aloft will continue to translate over much of southern Colorado, with no change in expected wind conditions across the High Wind Watch and Warning areas. While the highest winds of 70 to 80 knots will likely still be possible at the start of the period Monday morning, should see the strongest flow aloft shift out of the area through late morning and midday. During this time though, already low relative humidity values will steadily fall through late morning and with high fire danger quickly returning to all of south central and southeast Colorado. For the remainder of the day, well above normal temps in the 80s and 90s across the plains and 70s across the mountain valleys are expected. With already falling dewpoints continuing to fall into the afternoon and with these expected temps, will see area wide relative humidity values of 5 to 10 percent. While widespread critical fire weather conditions are expected on Monday, do have some concerns for at least some isolated areas of extremely critical fire weather conditions. As noted above, the strongest flow shifts east of the area by late morning and midday, but the area will remain on the edge of the strongest flow for much of Monday. In this setup, could easily see occasional to possibly frequent gusts of 50-60 knots or higher. Will continue to keep a close eye on this possibility given the extent of the fire danger, but also for the possible need to extend the High Wind Warning at least for parts of the area. Winds will finally diminish by mid to late evening on Monday, as humidity slowly improves. Another weak trough/boundary looks to settle late Monday night into early Tuesday morning, though similar to previous trends, will see any higher dew point air quickly shift east of the area during the day Tuesday. This will setup another day of high fire danger for most areas, though some lower confidence for the far eastern plains. Wednesday and Thursday are appearing to be another period of concern for critical to possibly extremely critical fire weather conditions across much of southern Colorado. Wednesday will likely note very hot and dry conditions with gusty/strong winds, with Thursday noting similar temps and humidity values but with strong to potentially damaging winds. While this is the expected trend, guidance showing some higher dew point air trying to inch its way into eastern Colorado during this time. If this were to occur, then thunderstorm development would be a possibility across the far eastern plains, within this more moist and unstable air. Similar trends possible Thursday, though upper trough looks to possibly situate this air and surface trough to the east during this time frame. Some slight cooling expected by late week and into next weekend, though fire weather concerns will remain over much of the area. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Monday morning) Issued at 427 AM MDT Sun May 8 2022 VFR conditions are expected at KALS, KCOS, and KPUB over the next 24 hours. Southwest winds gusting to 30 knots or higher will set in at all three TAF sites between 15-18Z today and last through the end of the forecast period.
