.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Key messages:

1) Red Flag conditions continue in the San Luis Valley.

Currently...

Variable high cloudiness was noted over the region at 3 am. Ambient
temps were in the 40s across the plain and San Luis Valley (SLV),
with 20s and 30s mtns. Winds were light, with some breezy-ness noted
in the Monarch pass area.

Today...

main issue today will be marginal critical fire weather conditions
in the San Luis valley as min RH values will be in the single digits
and winds will gust to 30 mph at times in the afternoon.

For the rest of the area, a synoptic lee trough will develop over
the KS/CO border today as mid level W-NWrly flow develops over the
region. This will allow temperatures to warm up considerably, and
anticipate max temps reaching into the 80s across the plains and 70s
over the larger valleys. The warmest temps over the plains will
develop along the lower Ark Rvr Valley, with upper 80s anticipated.
mtns will be in the 40s through 60s.

It should be noted that meteorological conditions for extreme fire
behavior will occur over parts of the plains today (especially in
gap flow regions), but given the moist ground and greening up, a red
flag hilite in not warranted given these conditions.

As alluded to above, westerly low level flow will dominate across
the plains by this afternoon, and it will bet breezy in the gap flow
areas over the plains.

No precip is anticipated anywhere over the region today. Some wave
clouds will likely develop over the mtns/plains interface this
morning and push out onto the plains by afternoon.

Tonight...

Mainly clear and dry with a light steady west winds is anticipated
over the region during this time. Mtn top westerly winds will
gradually be on the increase as a significant jet slowly progresses
towards the region. Mild min temps are anticipated with 40s and 50s
over the plains, and 30s valleys. \/Hodanish

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

Key Messages:

1)Widespread Fire Weather concerns continue through next week.

Saturday-Sunday: Fire Weather will continue to be our main concern
for the long-term forecast period. A broad upper-level trough and
associated jet will begin to move into the area on Saturday, giving
us breezy southwest winds. These winds should mix down towards the
surface during the afternoon, with gusts 0f 30-50 mph possible.
Along with this, temperatures will soar, hitting the low-mid 90s in
several locations across our eastern plains, which will bring us
even more dry ambient conditions. Relative humidity during the day
could drop into the single digits across the plains and SLV.  Ergo,
critical fire weather conditions are expected across a large portion
of the area on Saturday. The trough will continue building in on
Sunday as winds aloft increase with the incoming jet. Although
temperatures will only hit the low-90s, RH is well low enough to
fire weather to continue through the rest of the weekend. There does
exist a chance for a small amount of moisture Saturday night into
early Sunday over northern parts of the Continental Divide as the
trough swings through. However, given how dry ambient conditions are
and the speed of the low moving past, precip accumulations, if any,
will be light.

Monday-Thursday: Little change to the evolution in the large-scale
pattern for next week, according to most of the model solutions.
Still anticipating breezy west-southwest flow aloft as the strongest
winds of the jet move through, which will serve to extend fire
weather concerns into next week as well. Current model solutions
show the development of a stronger upper low off the west coast
Monday-Tuesday, which could begin to make its way into our region
around the middle of next week. Naturally, deterministic model
guidance still greatly differs on the exact placement and potency of
this upper low, which will only be confirmed closer to date.
However, in general, warm and breezy conditions will continue
through the end of the long-term forecast period. High temps will be
several degrees above average, conditions will be continuously dry,
and precipitation chances appear low through at least next Thursday.

VFR conditions are anticipated during the next 24 hours for all 3
taf sites, KPUB, KALS and KCOS.

As for winds, KALS will see breezy west winds by afternoon, light
thereafter. Winds at KCOS and KPUB are not expected to be diurnal
today as a more westerly component is anticipated, especially during
the latter part of the afternoon as a lee trough develops along the
CO.KS border. Winds may get a bit breezy from the west by late
afternoon.

Critical fire weather conditions are expected to occur across the
San Luis Valley once again this afternoon.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

Widespread critical fire weather conditions are expected to
persist across most of our forecast area through the middle of
next week, with prolonged periods of low relative humidity and
gusty afternoon winds each day.

In addition to critical fire weather conditions on Saturday,
near-record high temperatures are also expected across portions of
the eastern plains.
