Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 1145 PM MDT Wed Apr 27 2022 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday) Issued at 309 PM MDT Wed Apr 27 2022 Key messages: 1) Chance of thunderstorms across the eastern plains late this afternoon and evening, with stronger storms likely near the Kansas border. 2) Critical fire weather conditions San Luis Valley and Baca County Thursday, with elevated fire danger elsewhere. Currently...As was expected, the upper disturbance crossing the forecast area today has produced isolated high-based thunderstorms that in turn have produced strong gusty winds. There has been some cloud to ground lightning and a few reports of small hail, but essentially it has been a high wind threat. Temps have warmed into the mid 50s to mid 60s for the high valleys and 70s across the plains as of 2 PM. Tonight...As has been evident by current events, disturbance rolling across the forecast area was strong enough to force some decent high- based convection. These dry thunderstorms will continue to push east across the eastern plains through midnight tonight. SPC still has the southeast corner of the state under a Marginal area for severe weather, with even a sliver of the Slight box edging into Baca County, so any storms there later tonight have the potential of becoming strong to severe. Gusty winds of around 60 mph, cloud to ground lightning and small hail will be the main expected threats. Activity is forecast to end by midnight, with clearing skies overnight. Look for minimum temps tonight in the upper 20s to upper 30s for the high valleys, and 40s across the plains. Tomorrow...Southwest flow aloft across the Four Corners strengthens through the day as the next upper low pressure system to affect the region drops down into the Pacific NW. Continued dry conditions with very warm temps lean towards widespread elevated fire danger, though confidence for high enough winds is only there for the San Luis Valley and the far southeast corner of the state. Rest of the area will see near-critical fire weather conditions, though the time window criteria is not expected to be met at this point. Plan on highs in the mid 60s to mid 70s for the high valleys, and upper 70s to upper 80s for the plains. Moore .LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday) Issued at 309 PM MDT Wed Apr 27 2022 Key Messages: 1)Widespread critical fire weather conditions are expected Friday, with fire weather concerns expected to last through the weekend. 2)Some light showers will be possible Friday over parts of the Continental Divide. 3)Higher chance of precipitation Sunday-Monday, with possible thunderstorms over the plains and snow over the mountains. Thursday Night-Friday... An negatively tilted upper-level trough will be moving over the area starting late Thursday night into Friday. Prior to its arrival overhead, breezy southwest flow will pick up across the area aloft, resulting in some orographically-forced showers over parts of our higher terrain, mainly the Continental Divide. As of now, snow accumulations are expected to be very light. At the surface, a lee cyclone is expected to form over our eastern plains, resulting in some cool air advection that could serve to lower high temperatures by a few degrees on Friday relative to the NBM. However, model guidance is still a bit inconsistent on the placement of the cyclone and subsequent advection, so high temps for Friday will likely be in flux over the next few model runs. Friday's main concern will be widespread fire weather conditions over most of the CWA. A Fire Weather Watch has already been issued, as the westerly flow aloft will result in potent downsloping winds lee of the mountains, warming and drying the airmass in place further. On top of this, with the negatively tilted orientation of the passing trough on top of the upper-level jet moving overhead, which reaches upwards of 100 knots at times during the afternoon in the deterministic model solutions, strong winds may mix down to the surface. Will be considering the possibility of approaching High Wind criteria moving forwards. However, at this time we still appear just a bit below that threshold over the eastern plains. Regardless, gusty winds and RH near the single digits Friday will pose a widespread critical fire weather concern. Saturday... Winds will shift to more northerly Saturday and high temperatures will level out at about the same as Friday, in the mid-60s and 70s. The upper trough will move past our area and winds will decrease near the surface while still remaining slightly gusty closer to the Colorado-Kansas border. Given these gusty winds and the dry air advecting in from the north, will be looking closely at continued fire weather conditions moving into this weekend. Sunday-Monday... Upper-level ridging will build in starting early on Sunday, which will serve to increase high temperatures by a few degrees, getting into the high-70s to low-80s over the eastern plains. Deterministic model solutions begin to diverge Sunday evening into Monday, with the EC and Canadian sending an upper-low into our area while the GFS quickly kicks the best energy southeast of us. If the more northern tracks stay consistent as solutions evolve, Sunday evening into Monday could be seeing some convective-type showers over parts of the higher terrain, with little to no precip expected over the plains. Meanwhile, the GFS solution brings much more moisture to the eastern plains with the potential for convection. Looking at Fire Weather, even though the mountains and eastern plains have the potential to receive some moisture, the San Luis Valley is expected to remain dry, with RH low enough to pose some fire weather concerns during the afternoon hours. Tuesday Onwards... Model solutions continue to diverge, but somewhat agree on sending a new upper-level low into our region around the middle of next week. This could bring about stronger winds and more fire weather concerns while also potentially bringing some more precipitation to our far eastern plains. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Thursday night) Issued at 1138 PM MDT Wed Apr 27 2022 VFR conditions will prevail throughout the forecast period for all TAF sites (KALS, KCOS, and KPUB). Some mid and high level clouds will be moving in due to the troughing upstream. Winds will be diurnally driven throughout the morning hours and then begin to become influenced by the trough, which will allow for winds to become rather strong and gusty by later in the afternoon for all TAF sites, but more for KALS in particular. Winds could become strong enough that there could be some blowing dust possible for KALS, although it is not likely.
