Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 1139 AM MDT Tue Apr 19 2022 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 338 AM MDT Tue Apr 19 2022 Key Messages: 1) Critical Fire Weather conditions are expected this afternoon across much of southern Colorado. Currently Temperatures across the region early this morning were generally in the 30s and 40s across the plains and valleys, with generally 20s in the mtns. Low level jet down along the CO/NM border was still ongoing as these areas were still quite windy, with gusts in the 35 to 45 mph range, and temperatures in the mid 40s to mid 50s. Skies were generally mostly clear, with cirrus gradually increasing from the west. Today... Main concern today will once again be Critical Fire Weather conditions across the region. Wind gusts in the mtns will be in the 35 to 45 mph range while plains will be in the 30 to 40 mph range, with the strongest winds in the San Luis valley, the greater Walsenburg region and the far southeast plains. Areas in and around Pueblo may not start to get windy until mid to late afternoon. Lowest RH values are expected to be realized along the I-25 corridor out east to KLHX. It will be quite warm today with max temps mainly in the 60s over the plains, with some 70s over the higher elevations of the Palmer Divide and Raton Mesa region. It is not out of the question that we could see a record high today, as max temps are fcst to be 2-3F away from the record max temps. The overall warmest temps will be over the lower Ark Rvr valley from east of Pueblo to the KS border. Over the higher terrain, the San Luis Valley should see highs around 70F, with 40s and 50s higher mtns. Tonight... With very warm temps, Red Flag conditions will likely last into the mid evening hours, with poor moisture recovery tonight, especially south of US-50. Otherwise, variably high cloudiness is anticipated over most of the region. A quick moving disturbance moving east to the north of the region will keep the gradient ongoing over the higher terrain, and mtns will likely stay on the breezy/windy side throughout the night. In addition, some snow showers will be possible over the central mtns, mainly north of Cottonwood Pass. An inch or two of snow will be possible over higher elevations of northwest slopes. As for temps, min temps over the plains will fall into the U30s across N El Paso county to L50s down near KSPD. Valleys will fall into the 30s. Mtns will cool off into the teens and 20s. winds on the plains will be steady from the west at 5 to 15 mph with stronger gusts along the mtn/plains interface. A weak cool front will move over the Palmer Divide prior to sunrise and should be in the vicinity of US-50 around sunrise. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 338 AM MDT Tue Apr 19 2022 Key messages: 1) Elevated fire danger will continue to be a concern each day into the weekend. Greatest fire weather threat persists for Friday. Wednesday...Latest model trends indicate cold front passage is now expected to be early Wed morning, ushering in cooler air through the morning hours across the eastern plains. Winds will initially be gusty and out of the north, but by mid to late morning will swing around to a more easterly direction. However, zonal flow aloft continues and the westerly winds will strengthen through the aftn. The west winds will affect the higher elevations and high valleys initially, but by mid-afternoon should push through terrain gaps and beat back the easterly low level flow across Fremont, Pueblo and Huerfano counties. Therefore, decided to go ahead and issue a Fire Weather Watch for fire zones 221, 222, 224, 225 and 227 through 229. Plan on high temps in the mid 60s to lower 70s for the high valleys, and 70s to near 80F for the plains. Thursday and Friday...Models are remaining fairly consistent on timing of the next system to affect the region. An upper low pressure system off the coast of the Pacific NW Thu morning will begin to move onshore Thu night, then dig south as it moves onshore across the West Coast on Fri. Ahead of this system will be very warm and dry, with temps across the eastern plains nearly 90F on Fri. In addition, the tightening pressure gradient and the upper jet carving out the southern end of this system will nose into the state, so it is absolutely going to get windy. Fire wx highlights may be needed on Thu though humidity levels look borderline, but they will be likely for Fri as it is gearing up to be an extreme day with wind gusts nearing 50 mph in the afternoon. Latest model runs still shot a quick shot of snow for the mts Friday afternoon and evening, with little precipitation for the lower elevations. Saturday through Monday...As the core of the low tracks north of CO, it will push a cold front south into the state on Saturday. Depending on timing of the cold front, gusty winds with dry conditions may still be a threat for portions of the plains Saturday. Models are now somewhat agreeing on a secondary lobe of energy in the upper trough dropping across the Four Corners on Sunday, keeping more clouds and cooler temps in place for both Sunday and Monday. There may even be a better chance for some rain showers across the lower elevations both days, fingers crossed. Plan on highs all three days in the 50s and 60s for most locations.
