.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Key Messages:

1) Critical Fire Weather conditions expected across the San Luis
Valley, southeast mountains, and now the far southern I-25 corridor.
The Red Flag Warning for today has been expanded to include Huerfano
and western Las Animas.

2) Potential for strong southerly winds gusting up to 45 to 55 mph
tonight over the southeast plains, south of Highway 50.

Relatively quiet across the area early this morning, with the mid
and high clouds which were over the eastern plains last evening now
situated to the north. Despite clear skies in place, a steady wind
along with higher dewpoint air has allowed temps to stay relatively
mild early this morning especially across the plains. These higher
dewpoints in place and overall trends will actually be something to
keep an eye on today, as fire weather concerns once again return to
parts of southern Colorado later this afternoon. In the wake of last
evening's front, slightly cooler temps, though still slightly above
normal, are expected today across southern Colorado. No real big
change with the forecast highs for today, with 60s to low 70s
expected across the plains and mountain valleys. Early morning
sunshine will slowly become more partly cloudy to partly sunny in
spots later this afternoon. Mid and high clouds will stream back
overhead, with some lower ceilings possibly developing across the
eastern plains in the higher dewpoint air.

Surface ridging which has been in place across the plains will shift
east later today and into the afternoon, as stronger flow works it
way overhead and as pressure falls are noted over south central
Colorado. Tighter gradient with stronger southerly and moist
advection will help to keep dewpoints higher over much of the
plains. This setup and the cooler temps will keep RH values at or
above 20 percent for most of the plains. For locations over the far
southern I-25 corridor and to the west, much different conditions
are expected. Similar temps are expected, though the stronger push
of westerlies and strong mixing of much drier air will allow RH
values to really fall this afternoon. By midday and into the
afternoon, RH values will fall to the 5 to 10 percent range over the
San Luis Valley and in the 10 to 15 percent range over the southeast
mountains. During this time, will note south to southwest
winds/gusts steadily increasing, all leading to critical fire
weather conditons across these areas this afternoon.

For the far southern I-25 corridor area, it does get a little tricky
as this location will be right on the border of the low development
and the stronger southerly flow with more moist air to the east.
Given recent trends with short term and hires guidance, do think
this area will see a few hour window where the westerly momentum
moves into the area, and winds/gusts increase and RH values fall to
around 15 percent. While RH values will be a challenge and may not
fall below 15 percent, flow is really ramping up in this area late
this afternoon into the evening. Currently have winds forecast to
gust up to 30 to 40 mph, however, its possible that winds could be
gusting up to around 50 mph. Given the trends with the winds and
gusts and RH values expected to fall to around 15 percent, have
added the far southern I-25 corridor to the Red Flag Warning.

The noted increase in flow will continue tonight, especially across
the far southeast plains. This increase in flow and rather tight
pressure gradient at the surface will likely support continued gusty
southerly winds. Did increase winds and gusts tonight in this area,
with gusts up to 45 to 55 mph possible. Would not be surprised to
see an isolated higher gust to around 60 during this time. In this
setup with increasing southerly flow and likely WAA, will see some
increases in cloud cover as well. Some guidance showing some light
precip development, though soundings look rather dry and have kept
the forecast dry for now.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)

Key messages:

1) Critical fire weather conditions will continue to be a threat
each day through the upcoming week. Greatest concern continues to
be the Tuesday through Friday time frame.

Tuesday...Westerly flow aloft will increase and boost temperatures
across the area nicely for Tue, with highs in the 70s for the high
valleys and in the mid 70s to mid 80s for the plains. Dry conditions
continue, and the anticipated westerly winds of 20 to 30 mph with
gusts as high as 40 mph will once again produce critical fire
weather conditions for a large portion of the forecast area. An
upper disturbance passing by to the north will push a weak dry cold
front south across the Palmer Divide and the eastern plains late Tue
night, swinging surface winds around to a more northeast direction.
This will also serve to keep the lower levels mixed, with mild
overnight lows expected.

Wednesday...The cold front passage late Tue night into Wed morning
will help cool temps across the plains by about 5 to 7 degrees as
compared to the previous day, while the high valleys will once again
warm into the 70s. However, zonal flow aloft continues and the
westerly winds will strengthen through the aftn. Where these west
winds meet up with the easterly winds across the plains is tough to
predict, but currently it looks as if the San Luis Valley and the
Sangres will likely see critical fire weather conditions during the
aftn. The concern remains that somewhat poor humidity recovery the
night before will set the stage across the plains for receptive
fuels. Stay tuned.

Thursday and Friday...An upper low pressure system just off the
coast of the Pacific NW Wed night and Thu will dig south as it moves
onshore across the West Coast on Fri. Ahead of this system will be
very warm and dry, with temps across the eastern plains nearly 90F
on Fri. In addition, the tightening pressure gradient and the upper
jet carving out the southern end of this system will nose into the
state, so it is absolutely going to get windy. Fire wx highlights
will be likely for both days across much of the forecast area. Long
range models are is slightly better agreement this morning on
tracking the core of this upper low pressure system further north,
which would mean a quick shot of some snow for the mts but very
little for the lower elevations.

Saturday and Sunday...As the core of the low tracks north of CO, it
will push a cold front south into the state on Sat. This will help
cool temps into the 60s and 70s for much of the forecast area both
Sat and Sun, but it also promises to be windy. Therefore, there will
continue to be a fire weather threat for portions of the area both
days. However, while the GFS indicates windy and continued dry, the
EC is offering a different solution. The EC is indicating that a
secondary lobe of energy in the upper trough will push across the
Four Corners on Sun, bringing a chance of some much needed
precipitation to southern CO both Sun and Mon. Moore

period. KALS will be mostly gusty throughout forecast period with
a break from the gusts at about 12Z then back to gusty at end of
forecast period. KCOS will start out gusty, then diurnal winds
will take over mid forecast period, then back to gusty toward the
end of forecast period. KPUB will start out gusty then light and
variable at mid forecast period, back to gusty at end of forecast
period. High ceilings for KALS and KPUB early in forecast period.
Near saturation at surface at KALS may produce brief periods of
fog at 12Z. If fog does occur it can reduce conditions to MVFR,
but confidence in that scenario is low at this time.
