Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 1122 AM MDT Sun Apr 17 2022 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 353 AM MDT Sun Apr 17 2022 Key Messages: 1) Critical fire weather conditions are expected across south central Colorado today. The Red Flag Warning has been expanded to now include Teller, Crowley, Otero, and eastern Las Animas. Mid level trough pivoting across the region has supported some mountain snow over the higher elevations early this morning, along with mid/high clouds scattered across southern Colorado. This trough is quickly departing to the east while the deeper moisture is diminishing, per latest RAP analysis, with snow development lessening at this time. Expect this trend to continue this morning, with only some isolated light snow showers expected over the central mountains through around midday. The current mid/high clouds in place will depart and scatter this morning, with mostly sunny skies expected for much of the day. Additional high clouds return late today into this evening, though should be confined to the eastern plains. No real big change in thinking, with another day of high fire danger across southern Colorado. Strong westerlies in place will support gusty winds over much of the area today, and already noting this potential with some places observing some isolated stronger winds early this morning. While the stronger winds and gusts aren't expected until midday and afternoon, will see winds begin to ramp up this morning. The sunny skies and deep and strong westerly flow will support temperatures well into the 70s over the plains and 60s across the mountain valleys. Deep mixing and push of stronger westerly winds will help dewpoints really fall by midday and into the afternoon. Did lower dewpoints today, especially from the I-25 corridor and westward as most forecast soundings showing some rather dry air mixing down to the surface today. This dry air with the expected warm air, will support lowest RH values in the 5 to 10 percent range. How far east the stronger winds and drier air moves has been in question, given a southward moving boundary expected over eastern Colorado later today. Recent trends do suggest that this stronger push of drier air will move slightly farther east, with critical fire weather conditions now expected over Crowley, Otero, and eastern Las Animas. So, did include these counties/zones in the Red Flag Warning for today. Additionally, did expand this Warning to include Teller. While RH values are expected to only fall in the 16 to 20 percent range, expect really strong winds gusting as high as 40 to 50 mph over Teller that will increase the fire danger in this area. No change to the end time this evening, with conditions improving through mid evening. .LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday) Issued at 353 AM MDT Sun Apr 17 2022 Key messages: 1) Critical fire weather conditions will continue to be a threat each day through the upcoming week. Greatest concern is the Tuesday through Friday time frame. Monday...The cold front that is forecast to push across the area Sun night will make for a cooler and higher humidity start to the day for Monday, especially across the eastern plains. However, minor ridging across the region with the ridge axis gradually pushing east across CO during the day will allow for some gusty aftn winds and low relative humidity across the San Luis Valley and eastern mts. T herefore, decided to go ahead with a Fire Weather Watch for those areas. Plan on highs in the mid 60s to lower 70s for most areas. Tuesday and Wednesday...Nearly zonal westerly flow aloft across the region with a couple of minor disturbances passing by to the north will mean abundant warming and a higher chance for some gustier winds. Highs on Tue are forecast to warm into the mid 60s to lower 70s for the high valleys, and mid 70s to mid 80s for the plains. Then on Wed, another warm day is on tap though highs may be around 5 degrees cooler. Regardless, both days will likely need fire wx highlights, and a huge concern is that the expected humidity recovery Tue night will be fairly poor. Two warm to hot, windy days, joined together by a relatively dry night with poor recovery, will be setting the stage for very active fire wx conditions well into Fri. Thursday through Saturday...An upper low pressure system just off the coast of the Pacific NW on Thu will dig south as it moves onshore across the West Coast on Fri, then across the Great Basin and CO on Sat. Long range models do differ slightly on placement of this upper low as it tracks across the state, so Sat is still a question mark on how much precipitation will fall and where, and what that means for the nearly continuous dry conditions the region has suffered. However, Thu and Fri ahead of this system will be very warm and dry, with temps across the eastern plains nearly 90F on Fri. In addition, the tightening pressure gradient and the upper jet carving out the southern end of this system will nose into the state, which all means that it is going to get windy. Fire wx highlights again will be likely for Thu and Fri.
