Key Messages:

1) Breezy to windy conditions will keep areas of critical fire
   weather conditions and high fire danger in place across
   south central and southeast Colorado.

Currently...

Excluding the contdvd region across the central mtns, skies were
mostly clear across the region at 3 AM. In the C mtns area, mostly
cloudy skies were noted with snowshowers ongoing. Temps across the
plains ranged from the teen across parts of the divides, L30s in the
banana belt regions, and 20s elsewhere. The larger valleys were in
the tens. Mst of the mtn tops were below zero, with single digits
and 10s at mid mtn locations. Winds were relatively light except in
the windprone areas in the greater Salida region.

Today...

Main issue will continue to be the winds and humidity, as west to
southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 to 35 mph will be
common across the valleys and plains, with higher amounts in the
mtns. RH values will continue to reach critical values during peak
heating with values in the upper single digits most area in the
plains and valleys. With the stronger winds and low RH values, Fire
Weather concerns will be with us, and a RED FLAG WARNING is once
again in effect for the plains and San Luis Valley (SLV).

From a sensible weather point of view, it will be a nicer day today
than yesterday as it will be 15 to 20F warmer across the plains and
about 10F warmer in the SLV.

Snow showers will continue in the central mtns today with very light
accumulations likely at the higher elevations.

Tonight...

A weak wave will move across the region. This will cause an uptick
in snow showers across the central mtn region. Otherwise it will be
dry across the region. Some bands of high clouds will move across
the region tonight. Temps are expected to be several degrees warmer
tonight as compared to this mornings low temps, with mainly 30s on
the plains and 20s in the SLV. Winds will be light over the lowe
elevations with an uptick in winds over the mtns (winds in the
higher mtns will be 15 to 30 mph).

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

Key Messages:

1)Concerns for Fire Weather will continue into early next week.

Breezy west winds aloft will continue over the region as shortwave
ridging will begin to build in towards this weekend. This will lead
to drying and warming conditions, continuing our stretch of daily
Fire Weather concerns. Surface winds Friday will be west-northwest,
gusting upwards of 30 knots in the afternoon. High temperatures will
climb into the mid-60s over the valleys, with mid-high 70s setting
in over the plains. Other than a few lingering snow showers over
parts of the Continental Divide, the area will remain dry.

A similar pattern will set in over the weekend, with dry and calm
weather. A weak cold front will push into the plains late Friday
night into early Saturday, which could assist in providing some
gusty winds while also knocking down high temps 5-10 degrees. Sunday
quickly warms back up as the ridge is pushed east by a passing upper
low to our north. These conditions, along with some stronger mixing
across the region thanks to an enhanced upper jet passing over,
should serve to reduce RH a bit and increase Fire Weather Danger for
Sunday.

Conditions for the start of next week are coming into focus now as
model solutions begin to converge. Upper-level ridging should build
in around Monday. Out ahead, enhanced northwest flow aloft should
moderate temperatures a few degrees, before the ridge sets in on
Tuesday, where high temps are expected to ramp up an additional 10
degrees or so, and widespread Critical Fire Weather conditions will
be possible.

VFR conditions are expected for all three sites, KCOS, KPUB, and
KALS for the remainder of the TAF period. Westerly surface winds
will continue to prevail over the region with gusts up to 35KT at
KALS and 30KT at KCOS and KPUB this afternoon. Winds will weaken and
follow normal diurnal trends through the overnight hours. Westerlies
will kick back in tomorrow afternoon, but are expected to be
slightly weaker than the past few days.
