Issued at 1207 PM MDT Wed Apr 13 2022 Updated to end winter weather highlights across the central mountains. Will continue to see scattered snow showers this afternoon and into the evening, with any impacts being north of Cotton Wood Pass. UPDATE Issued at 1049 AM MDT Wed Apr 13 2022 Cold air aloft (mid level lapse rates of 8-9c/km) and passing wave helping to generate some low topped convection across south central and southeast Colorado, with a cell moving southeast across central El Paso County at this time. This cell produced some brief snow at the AFF and COS, with areas further east likely seeing the same. As of 10 am, have seen gusty westerly winds develop in the San Luis Valley and across the higher terrain west of the I-25 Corridor with Canon City/Fremont Cnty Airport (1V6) and Walsenburg Airport (4v1) seeing westerly winds of 15 to 35 mph and dew pts in the single digits above and below zero. Still expected these dry westerly winds to mix out across the I-25 Corridor through the far southeast plains this afternoon and into the early evening, with Red Flag conditions still anticipated across most of southeast Colorado, though eastern portions of Kiowa, Prowers and Baca Counties may not see a full 3 hours of critical conditions. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 407 AM MDT Wed Apr 13 2022 Key Messages: 1) Red Flag conditions continue today across the plains; it will be windy but nothing like yesterday. Currently... Mid level trough axis was over the region at this time. with the cool air aloft over the region, variable cloudiness was noted over the region, and a few light showers were occurring over the plains. Over the mtns, with Nw flow in place, snow was occurring over the central mtns, and KLXV was reporting snow at 3 AM. Temps at this hour were mainly in the 20s and 30s across the plains, with some teens in far N El Paso county. Temps in the valleys were in the teens, while mtns were in the single digits. Today... Primary concern today will be fire weather. Very dry was noted in the mtns as dwpts were around 0F. With westerly low level flow developing later today, this dry air is going to advect onto the plains. The low RH air combined with west-northwest wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph and temps increasing into the 40s and 50s will cause RED FLAG conditions to develop over the I-25 corridor around noontime, with the critical fire weather conditions pushing east by early to mid afternoon. Snow will continue in the central mountains through the day, with an additional 1 to 3 inches possible over the favored NW slopes. Although temps will be in the 40s and 50s today, given the stiff west to northwest winds, it will feel much colder. Dress appropriately for the conditions today. There also may be a few light showers over the plains today. Tonight... Warm air advection will begin to develop aloft and this will dry out the atmosphere over the plains, thus expect dry conditions over the plains and generally clear skies. With NW flow continuing over the central mtns, snow showers will be possible, with the activity decreasing with time. It will be quite cool tonight with readings in the 20s most of the plains. Some teens will be noted over N El Paso county, while upper 20s will be noted in the banana belt locations. Valleys will be in the teens with +/-single digits in the mtns. .LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday) Issued at 407 AM MDT Wed Apr 13 2022 Key Messages: 1)Fire Weather continues as temperatures warm through the rest of the week and into the weekend. Breezy west-northwest flow will continue aloft into Thursday. Shortwave ridging will also build in over the Rockies, resulting in warming temperatures as we move towards the weekend. High temperatures will be much warmer than Wednesday with mid-50s over the valleys and mid-high 60s over the plains. Fire Weather will continue to be a concern, and RH values will drop into the single digits over parts of the eastern plains Thursday afternoon. Have hoisted a Fire Weather Watch over areas with consistently gusty winds. Brief upper-level ridging will properly build into the area Friday- Saturday. Temperatures will continue to warm, climbing into the 70s in places, while areas of gusty winds are expected to persist. Will keep an eye on continued near-critical fire weather conditions each day into next week. Model solutions have begun to agree more on the evolution of our next system, currently slated to make its way into our area starting late Saturday night into Sunday. An upper-level trough will translate eastward to our north. The system itself will likely be too far north to impact our weather too significantly, but the passing wave could give us another cool-down in temperatures and give us some unsettled weather around the start of next week.
