Damaging wind gusts still ongoing across much of the High Wind
Warning area at this time, especially along and south of Highway
50. While the strongest gusts of 80-90 mph are likely complete,
still think wind gusts of 60-70 mph will remain possible this
afternoon. With these winds and gusts this afternoon, blowing dust
also remains a concern, with the Blowing Dust Advisory still
warranted at this time. Precip development over and near the
mountains has been a little more expansive than previously
thought. While the overall impacts will be lower, outside of the
Continental Divide, this is impacting the RH values in spots.
Despite this trend, very dangerous fire conditions remain across
much of southern Colorado given the high winds and with RH values
at or just below 15 percent in some locations.

...DANGEROUS FIRE-WEATHER CONDITIONS ALREADY DEVELOPING ACROSS
THE INTERSTATE-25 CORRIDOR THIS MORNING...

For the Interstate-25 corridor, the Red Flag Warning start time
has been shifted to be imminent. Surface observations in this
area indicate relative humidity already falling below 20 percent
in some locations, where downslope winds of at least 35-55 mph
are already ongoing. Elsewhere, a Red Flag Warning is in effect
for a large part of the region from 11AM to 8PM MDT. Fire-weather
conditions are expected to worsen through the day across the Red
Flag Warning area.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 350 AM MDT Tue Apr 12 2022

Key Messages:

1) Very windy all areas through today; winds gradually decreasing
during the afternoon.

2) Strongest winds along greater I-25 corridor from south of Pueblo
to the New Mexico border; most intense winds from mid to late
morning (9AM - Noon).

3) Heavy snow over San Juans this morning.

4) Very Dangerous Red Flag conditions through today.

Currently...

Very windy across the area this morning with many areas gusting into
the 35 to 55 mph range. These strong winds are being caused by a
deep column of very strong winds moving across the region. With the
strong wind flow in place, temperatures at 3 am were quite mild with
readings in the 60s across the plains and near 50s in the valleys.

Today...

It will be windy everywhere today. However the strongest winds will
occur over the southern I-25 corridor from just south of KPUB down
to the NM border. HRRR continues to show wind potential to 90 mph in
this region. Based on latest guidance, the winds should start to
gradually relax region-wide starting by early to mid afternoon as
the jet pushes east into KS.

Given the strong winds and lower RH values, fire weather concerns
will be extreme today, and we will be monitoring HOT SPOT Sat Pix
data very carefully through the day for new fire starts.

We are expecting some locally heavy snow this morning over the San
Juans, and a quick foot of snow is not out of the question. The
combo of winds and snow will make travel across the SW mtns quite
difficult.

Temps today will be mild with max temps in the 60s across the I-25
corridor and up to 80F over the far eastern plains.

The Pacific cool front will gradually push through the region from
late this afternoon into this evening.

Tonight...

winds will steadily decrease through the evening hours with a N-NW of
10-15 mph expected by midnight over the plains. there could be some
light showers over the plains tonight but no significant
accumulations are expected. Temps will cool down into the 20s over
the plains by sunrise, with tens in the valleys. Mtn tops will get
below zero F.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

2)Cooler temps and snow showers over the Continental Divide through
Thursday morning.

3)Warming trend into this weekend, with more Fire Weather concerns.

Wednesday...

Model solutions continue to show a fairly potent upper-level jet
over our area around midweek, resulting in some gusty west-northwest
winds down at the surface. Fire Weather conditions will be a concern
across the eastern plains during the afternoon, with gusts around 30-
35 knots expected along with RH values close to or just a bit below
thresholds. Have hoisted a Fire Weather Watch in response. The
passing front from early in the day will bring in some cold air
advection at the low levels, and high temperatures will drop about
30 degrees from Tuesday. The eastern plains will likely only see
high-40s to low-50s, while the higher terrain and valleys will be 5-
10 degrees cooler. Additionally, light snow showers will persist
through Thursday over parts of the Continental Divide.

Thursday-Monday...

Zonal flow aloft will continue through the end of this week, and the
deterministic model solutions are in fair agreement on the evolution
of the upper-level pattern into this weekend. Warm and dry
conditions will dominate as temperatures quickly rebound across the
region, climbing into the 60s-70s over the majority of our CWA Thurs-
Fri. Gusty winds will also continue, and the threat of Fire Weather
Conditions is expected to return each afternoon. Model solutions
begin to diverge around Sunday-Monday, with a new upper-level
disturbance possibly passing to our north around the start of next
week, which could serve to knock temperatures back down and bring in
some more unsettled weather.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon)
Issued at 1126 AM MDT Tue Apr 12 2022

VFR ceilings and vis are expected for all three sites, KCOS, KPUB,
and KALS for the entire TAF period. However, strong winds and dust
could degrade visibility at any of the TAF sites, any time between
now and 02Z. Areas of dust are being closely monitored.

Westerly and northwesterly winds gusting up to 45KT at KCOS, 50KT
for KALS, and 55KT for KPUB are expected to begin to weaken after
22Z, and will weaken to below 40KT by 02Z tonight. Lighter
northwesterly winds will remain in place through the overnight hours
with midlevel clouds moving in by tomorrow morning. Westerly winds
are expected to pick back up towards the end of the TAF period,
around 16-18Z on Wednesday morning, but are not expected to be as
strong as today.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Critical fire weather conditions are expected today across plains,
the San Luis Valley and Fremont county. Please do NOT burn today or
do anything that could cause a spark which could start a wildfire.

Snow will move into the Continental Divide tonight, with several
inches of snow expected over the southwest mountains and the central
mountains.

Very strong winds are expected to develop after midnight tonight
over all of the mountains, with the strongest winds occurring over
the eastern mountains. Winds of up to 100 mph will be possible in
the mountains. The strong winds are expected to work onto the plains
around the Walsenburg area prior to sunrise, with winds of 40 to 80
mph possible. Dangerous driving conditions will occur late tonight
