Main update this morning was to add Kiowa and Prowers counties to
the Red Flag Warning for today. RH values have been quickly
falling over the last couple of hours down to around 10 percent in
some locations, and expect this falling trend to continue through
the afternoon. Winds and gusts are currently increasing, with
quick rises in the near term likely over most of southern
Colorado. Additional pressure falls this afternoon will allow the
current trough axis and relaxed gradient to deepen/tighten, with
stronger winds now anticipated to reach the CO and KS border and
lead to critical fire weather conditions over the entire plains.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Key messages:

1) High fire danger across most of the region for this afternoon.

2) Temperatures running about 15F above normal plains; 10F valleys.

Currently...Mild temperatures were noted over the region at 3 am
this morning. Readings on the plains were in the 40s along the
mtns/plains interface with 30s were noted over the far eastern
plains. Valleys were relatively mild with 30s and 40s near the
mtns, and 20s over the interior of the larger valleys. Mtns were in
the 20s and 30s.

A well defined area of wave clouds were noted over the Front Range
and extended south across the central mtns. Otherwise, skies were
clear.

Today...

It is going to be unseasonably warm over the region today with
temperatures running 10 to 15F above normal across most of the fcst
area. Although these temps will be quite warm, I do not anticipate
any records today. The main impacts today will be fire weather as
gusty west to southwest winds will combine with the very warm temps
and low RH values to produce critical RH values and critical wind
speeds. the greatest concerns will be over the San Luis valley and
the greater I-25 corridor region. Most of the far eastern plains will
see weaker winds and the threat will be less over these area. The
mid Arkansas River valley (KANK-K1V6) will also see critical fire
weather conditions.

A disturbance will be moving into the central mtns later today and
clouds will continue to increase with a slight chance of snow showers
by late afternoon over the central mtns.

high clouds over the mtns early this morning will increase and push
over the plains later this AM, moving over the plains this
afternoon.

Tonight...

Showers will rapidly ramp up this evening over teh central mtns with
1 to 3 inches of snow possible through tonight. Other more isolated
showers will be possible over the rest of the CONTDVD, while the
remainder of the region will remain dry.

A weak cool front will push down the plains after midnight tonight.
This front will not have much in the way of any sensible weather
with it over the plains except for the gradually wind shift during
the early morning hours.

With quite a bit of low level mixing occurring tonight due to the
fropa, min temps should be relatively mild with readings in the 30s
and 40s plains and around 30F over the large valleys. 10s and 20s
mtns.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)

Key Messages:

1) Multiple days of Fire Weather Conditions are possible/likely
across southern Colorado.

2) Signals for possible impactful storm during next week, bringing
windy conditions, more chances for precipitation, and cooler
temperatures.

Sunday... Sunday will start to bring an uptick in active weather
across southern Colorado. The shorter range ensemble models, the
SREF and HREF, are in good agreement about a trough passing over
Colorado during the day, but the core of the system staying to the
north, closer to the Colorado and Wyoming state line border. As the
southern periphery of this trough pushes across the region during
the day, synoptic ascent will modestly increase, aiding in some
precipitation development and maintenance. Winds aloft will also
increase in magnitude and become westerly for most of the day. This
will induce strong orographic forcing over the mountains, but
particularly across the central and western mountains. With synoptic
support and orographics in place, isolated pockets of precipitation,
in the form of light snow, are expected across the higher terrain
areas, but again, especially along the central and western
mountains. The greatest chance of this precipitation will be earlier
in the day, in response to the wave just starting to approach. At
the surface, a weak cold front will drop across the area early
during the day. This will cool temperatures down as compared to
Saturday, but will still be 5°-10°F above average. Another threat
from this wave will be more Critical Fire Weather conditions. The
strong westerly winds will become mixed down off of the higher
terrain features, and winds at the surface will become gusty, with
gusts around 30-40kts. As the downsloping winds develop, drier air
will also become mixed down, and will drop RH values to around and
less than 10%. Like previous days, the combination of gusty winds
and low RH will allow for Critical Fire Weather conditions to
develop along the I25 corridor, the San Luis Valley, and parts of
the Arkansas River Valley. Finally another threat starting to
materialize looks like the possibility of some thunderstorms over
the far southern eastern plains. As the drier winds push off the
higher terrain, they will meet the higher moisture content behind
the aforementioned cold front, and a dryline will develop around the
Baca County area. With modest instability, mixed-layer CAPE
around 100-300 J/Kg, and convergence along the dryline, an
isolated thunderstorm or two will be possible. The greatest
threats from any thunderstorm that does develop will be lightning
and gusty downdraft winds around 30kts.

Monday... The start of the work week will bring another day of
active weather to the forecast area. Flow aloft will become more
flat and zonal, though still strong, during the day. With the
stronger flow still persisting, orographics will continue over the
mountains, and again, especially the central and western mountains.
This will keep precipitation chances up along those areas, and
isolated to scattered pockets of precipitation are expected,
especially later in the day. Elsewhere across southern Colorado, dry
conditions are expected. Temperatures will also remain above average
across the forecast area. Like previous days, Critical Fire Weather
conditions will again be likely Monday. With the strong westerly
flow aloft, a lee trough is expected in response to this, and a
tighter PGF will develop. Given this, gusty winds will materialize,
and these winds will mix down drier air, dropping RH values. With
the gusty winds and low RH, Critical Fire Weather conditions are
likely, mostly across the eastern plains this time.

Tuesday - Wednesday... The start of the mid week period is still
expected to have the most impactful weather at this time. The GEFS
and EPS ensemble models are in agreement about a trough digging
southward and impacting the forecast area. Unlike yesterday though,
the ensemble models are closer in agreement about the track of the
system, leading to better confidence in the forecast. Yesterday, the
GEFS had the core of the system near Montana/Wyoming and the
Dakotas, with the EPS further south, closer to Colorado and Wyoming.
The most recent model runs show a notable shift northward in track,
particularly the EPS. The GEFS is relatively the same with its
track, with a small shift northward, but the EPS now shows the core
of the system in northern Wyoming. Models may be now converging on a
northern track solution, but will still need to be monitored
closely, as details still aren't fully clear. With that all said
though, this type of pattern would bring increased precipitation
chances to higher terrain areas, and windy conditions across all of
southern Colorado. Temperatures would also be expected to drop to
below normal values for this time of year, especially on Wednesday.

Thursday - Friday... For the end of the long term forecast period,
models are in decent agreement about relatively zonal flow
developing across southern Colorado behind the mid week storm
system. This type of flow pattern will keep precipitation chances
mostly low across the forecast area, except across the central and
western mountains, where more isolated to widely scattered pockets of
precipitation would be expected. Temperatures will also only slowly
warm, and back to around average values for this time of year.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Sunday afternoon)

VFR conditions with dry weather are expected for all of the TAF
sites this period. A passing system and front are expected later
tonight into Sunday, though precip chances look to remain away
from the sites. Low ceilings may develop to the north of COS late
tonight but if they do, they would likely remain to the north.
Windy conditions are expected for most of the period, even
tonight. Southwest to west gusts today into this evening for all
sites, with fropa shifting the winds to the north at COS and PUB
tonight. With flow really increasing tonight, did add LLWS to all
locations.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Breezy west to southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph, combined with low
relative humidity values and dry conditions will bring Critical Fire
Weather conditions to most of the southeast plains, Fremont county
and the San Luis Valley this afternoon.

Later tonight, some light snow will be possible in the central
mountains, 1 to 3 inches will be possible.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Gusty winds and low relative humidity values will continue on Sunday
and Monday, bringing another couple of days of likely Critical Fire
Weather conditions across the I-25 corridor, San Luis Valley, and
parts of the Arkansas River Valley Sunday, and the eastern plains
Monday.

Critical Fire Weather conditions remain possible Tuesday through
Friday over the San Luis Valley, the I-25 corridor, and the eastern
plains.

Precipitation chances and gusty winds will increase late Sunday
through Wednesday. The greatest chance of precipitation remains over
the mountains at this time. Snow is expected over the mountains and
rain at lower elevations at this time.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Weather conditions that meet reporting criteria for spotters will be
possible across the central mountains tonight.
