Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 246 PM MDT Fri Apr 8 2022 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday) Issued at 244 PM MDT Fri Apr 8 2022 Key messages: 1) High fire danger across most of the region for Saturday afternoon. 2) Much warmer temperatures with the Plains in the lower 80s. Currently...brisk northerly flow continues across the far Eastern Plains this afternoon as an upper level low continues to shift eastward away from the area. Humidity values around 15 percent are combining with winds gusting to near 30 mph to produce high fire danger near the Kansas border. Elsewhere, quiet conditions exist with temperatures in the lower to mid 60s across the lower elevations under clear skies. Tonight...weak high pressure aloft will shift east across the state with dry, quiet conditions across southern Colorado. Flow aloft will transition westerly by morning, with mixing increasing by morning. This will help keep overnight lows elevated along the Eastern Mountain mid slopes, where mid to upper 40s are forecast. Lower to mid 30s are expected across the lower elevations of the Plains, while 20s will be seen across the San Luis Valley. Saturday...the upper shortwave ridge will flatten and shift east into the Central Plains, as an upper trough moves into Utah. This will force flow aloft southwesterly by early afternoon. Strong mixing will allow for southwesterly winds at the surface. Southwesterly winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts 30 to 40 mph are expected across much of the region by midday. The strongest winds are forecast over the San Luis Valley, and along the I-25 corridor, especially in gap wind prone areas. Humidity values will be low, with most areas under 10 percent. Afternoon highs will be warm as well, with upper 70s to lower 80s across the region. The combination of strong surface winds and low humidity will set the stage for dangerous fire weather conditions. Those with outdoor burning activities planned should postpone them until another day. As the upper disturbance approaches from the west, isolated snow showers may be possible over the Central Mountains, north of Cottonwood Pass, late in the day. Mozley .LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday) Issued at 244 PM MDT Fri Apr 8 2022 Key Messages: 1) Slightly above normal temperatures early next week. 2) Windy conditions continue into next week and with warm and dry conditions in place, expect increased fire weather concerns to continue Sunday through Tuesday. 3) Snow returns to the Continental Divide early next week, with some potential for more areawide precip chances by mid week. Expect an upper trough to swing through Saturday night into Sunday assisting with elevated winds, but also helping to bring a period of light to moderate snow to the central amounts. Amounts still appear to be on the light side, especially with a small window of snow development. An associated front does move south through Colorado by early Sunday morning, providing some cooling to Sunday's high temps. Additionally, some guidance still hinting at the possibility of low ceilings with FROPA, but confidence remains low at this time. If these lower clouds do develop and move across the area, would anticipate them to quickly scatter given the return to stronger and deeper westerly flow. Cooler air in place will support lower high temps on Sunday, though still in the 60s and 70s across the plains and 50s and 60s across the mountain valleys. Dewpoints do rise into the 20s and possibly 30s post FROPA early Sunday, though the quick return to westerly flow will support a quickly drying air mass. In this setup, will see dew points fall into the single digits and quite possibly below zero by Sunday afternoon. With surface winds increasing throughout the day and low RH values in place, critical fire weather conditions will likely develop once again over much of southern Colorado. Fire weather headlines will likely be needed, but given the time frame and that there are already multiple days with headlines at this time, have opted to not issue any headlines at this time. As the trough exits to the east early next week, a return to zonal flow is expected. Once again, the flow remains strong and expect gusty conditions and the risk for high fire danger to persist into Monday and Tuesday. Some indications that very strong winds could develop over much of the area on Tuesday, as a deep trough approaches the region by early to mid next week. Variability remains with the evolution of this system, so confidence is not overly high with the stronger wind potential. However, mountain snow especially over the Continental Divide is appearing likely, with possible rain/snow chances over the lower elevations.
