.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 328 AM MDT Thu Apr 7 2022

Key messages:

1) Another windy day with Critical Fire Weather conditions expected
across much of south central and southeast Colorado.

Current water vapor imagery and upper air analysis continues to
indicate strong northerly flow aloft across the region, as a strong
120 kt jet core digs down the backside of a long wave trough and
upper low across the Rockies and Upper Midwest. At the surface,
observations at 2 am are indicating a very dry airmass in place
across the region, with dew pts in the single digits above and below
zero across the higher terrain and mainly in the single digits to
teens across the plains and temperatures ranging from the teens to
mid 30s areawide at this time.

Next day same verse across south central and southeast Colorado with
strong winds and critical fire weather conditions the main concern.
Again, not much change in the current forecast with strong northerly
flow aloft continuing across the Rockies as the jet digs down the
back side of the Upper Midwest low pressure system. Models do
indicate tightening gradients aloft, as the current lobe of energy
rotating around the Upper Midwest low continues to translate down
across the High Plains. This, along with slight warming supporting
good mixing, will allow for another breezy to windy day, with north
to northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph and gusts of 40 to 60 mph
expected across south central and southeast Colorado. The strongest
winds to remain across the far southeast plains where a High Wind
Warning is in effect from 9 AM to 7 PM. The strong winds may also
produce areas of blowing dust across the eastern plains this
afternoon.

Slight warming aloft will allow for slightly warmer temperatures
today with highs in the 50s to lower 60s expected across the lower
elevations, and mainly in the 30s and 40s across the higher terrain.
The warmer temperatures and continued dry atmosphere will lead to
min rhs in the 5-15 percent range across the lower elevations, and
combined with the gusty winds, will lead to another day of critical
fire weather conditions with Red Flag Warnings in effect from 9 AM
to 8 PM across the San Luis Valley and all of the southeast Plains.

Winds decouple through the late evening and overnight hours at or
below seasonal levels mainly in the 20s to lower 30s.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

Key Messages:

1) Multiple days of possible Fire Weather Conditions across southern
Colorado starting Friday.

2) Possible impactful storm during next week, bringing increased
precipitation chances and a cool down in temperatures.

Friday... Starting off the long term period, a relatively quiet day
of weather is expected, except for possible fire weather conditions
across the eastern plains. Synoptically, a large trough will be
slowly pushing eastward, with a ridge of high pressure following in
behind it. Shorter range ensemble models, such as the SREF and HREF,
are in good agreement about this evolution, leading to greater
confidence in the forecast. With the trough steadily trekking
eastward, and the ridge following closely behind it, a tighter PGF
will develop aloft over the eastern part of the forecast area. This
tighter PGF aloft will allow for stronger winds, around 50kts, to
materialize around 700mb. As diurnal mixing becomes established
during the afternoon, some of these stronger winds will likely
become mixed down to the surface, and wind gusts around 20-25kts are
expected across the far eastern plains. Drier moisture from aloft
will would also be expected to become mixed down to the surface.
With the moisture mixing out, and the gusty winds at the surface,
fire weather conditions are possible across the far eastern plains
during the afternoon Friday. Elsewhere across southern Colorado, the
ridge of high pressure will bring increasing subsidence, and will
keep precipitation chances extremely low, and temperatures will
start to warm.

Saturday... Starting off the weekend, more relatively quiet weather
is anticipated, though with more chances of fire weather conditions.
The aforementioned ridge of high pressure will be passing directly
over the southern Colorado region at this point. Winds aloft will
become more westerly throughout the day, and a lee trough will
develop in response to this. This will induce a tighter PGF along
the I25 corridor, and therefore increase the winds along there as
well. With the gustier winds in place, more drying out at the
surface is expected. Given that, more fire weather conditions will
be possible along the I25 corridor Saturday afternoon. Otherwise
over southern Colorado, with the ridge in place, synoptic descent
will become dominant over the area. Given this, precipitation
chances will again remain low. Temperatures will also continue the
warming trend, with temperatures 10°-20°F above average.

Sunday - Wednesday... The later parts of the long term period will
bring the next rounds of more active weather. The GEFS and EPS are
in decent agreement with a more meridional flow pattern
materializing. Sunday, the first trough will begin digging southward
toward the region, but will stop just shy of passing over southern
Colorado, and will stay to the north. Regardless though, westerly
winds aloft will increase, and isolated to widely scattered
precipitation would be likely across the central and western
mountains. A weak cold front is also expected to drop southward as
the parent trough ejects to the NE during the day, bringing slightly
cooler temperatures as compared to Saturday. Heading into the start
of the work week, Monday is more of a "down" day, as flow becomes
more flat between the exiting Sunday system and the next system
approaching from the west. Still though, with the active flow aloft,
more isolated to widely scattered precipitation is possible along
the central and western mountains during Monday. In the Tuesday and
Wednesday timeframe, the ensemble models are in agreement about a
larger trough digging over the region. There are a lot of details
that still need to be ironed out about how this system will impact
southern Colorado, but a broader view of likely impacts would be
increased precipitation chances, especially for the mountains, and a
cool down in temperatures.

ALS. Gusty north winds can be expected again across all of south
central and southeast Colorado with winds of 25-40kts developing at
COS and PUB between 14-17Z. Winds of 25-35 kts remain expected at
ALS between 16Z-18Z. Winds to gradually decrease through late
afternoon and evening for all three terminals.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Another day of strong winds and high fire danger can be expected
across southern Colorado today, with strong north winds gusting to
between 40 and 60 mph developing this morning across all of south
central and southeast Colorado. The strongest winds are expected
across eastern portions of Kiowa, Bent, Prowers and Baca counties.
The strong winds, combined with dry conditions, will develop
critical fire weather conditions across the San Luis Valley and all
of the southeast plains later this morning, which will continue into
the early evening when the strongest winds are expected to subside.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

Strong winds and low relative humidity values will continue on
Friday, bringing another day of possible Critical Fire Weather
conditions across the far eastern plains.

Critical Fire Weather conditions remain possible Saturday through
Tuesday over the San Luis Valley, the I-25 corridor, and the
eastern plains.

Precipitation chances increase late Sunday through Tuesday, with
snow over the mountains and rain at lower elevations at this time.
