A Wind Advisory means that sustained wind speeds of between

58 mph. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially
for high profile vehicles. In addition, strong winds over desert
areas could result in briefly lowered visibilities to well under
a mile at times in blowing dust or blowing sand. Use extra
caution.

.SYNOPSIS...
Quiet, cool weather is in place this week though jet stream energy
will arrive over the area by midweek. This will lead to a period of
gusty winds, particularly on Wednesday. Meanwhile, cooler than
normal temperatures will persist through the end of the week. After
chilly mornings, plentiful sunshine will warm temperatures into the
upper 60s to lower 70s during the afternoon over the lower
elevations, including metro Phoenix.

.DISCUSSION...
Dry and cool are the keywords of the forecast over the next several
days, as we are essentially in a persistence scenario across the
Desert Southwest. Lows this morning were in the low-mid 40's in the
more urbanized areas across the lower deserts, with many of the more
rural outlying areas seeing lows in the upper 30's. These low temps
are quite cool, about 7-10 degrees below the normals for the date.

For the next 36 hours or so, we are sitting between our exiting
disturbance and the next dry weather maker(s), currently off to our
northwest. Cold advection is underway, so expect a cool Monday
- with Metro Phoenix holding in the 60s once again. A few high
clouds will filter through here tomorrow, but temperatures should
get a slight nudge upward ahead of the next weather maker.

The most interesting part of the forecast comes down to finessing
how a pair of shortwaves move southward into the region on Wednesday
as the overall long-wave pattern over North America continues to
amplify. 500mb height normalized anomalies are expected to rise as
high as +4 SD above climo over the Yukon Territory/eastern Interior
Alaska and as low as -2 to -3 SD below climo over the mid-
Mississippi Valley by Wednesday. Progged H7 RH values remain <5%, so
the only impact here is wind.

There continues to be fair disagreement between the EPS and GEFS
means. This is most notable in the surface pressure field. The
pressure gradient is more pronounced on the EPS, largely because it
has a stronger surface high (~1050mb east of Reno, NV) when compared
to the GEFS (~1040mb in S Idaho). The EPS solution has support from
its Canadian counterpart. Impressively, the 1050mb EPS high over the
Great Basin exceeds the 30-year max CFS-Reanalysis climate for mid-
November.

Thus, the ECMWF EFI for wind gust potential remains in the 0.7-0.8
across parts of C AZ extending over into the CO Valley and SE Cali.
This indicates that unusually enhanced wind gusts are becoming more
likely if the EPS solution of a stronger high & gradient plays out.
Our official forecast now has northerly wind gusts from 30-40 mph in
the lower elevations over parts of SE CA on Wednesday morning, with
gusts in excess of 50 mph over the ridgetops. If confidence in the
EPS scenario continues to grow, wind advisories may be needed for
some locations, with the greatest likelihood being the Joshua Tree
NP zone(560). Localized blowing dust is likely as well. Over South-
Central AZ, elevated northeasterly winds are likely as well
Wednesday morning, especially over the ridgetops north and east of
Phoenix. However, wind speeds over South-Central AZ are expected to
remain under wind advisory thresholds.

From Thursday through the weekend, we will remain under the
influence of a highly-amplified upper air pattern affecting the
continent. Ensembles continue to anchor exceptional and/or record 4-
sigma positive height anomalies over Yukon by Thursday. Resultant
downstream meridional flow will continue to allow disturbances to
dive south and replenish abnormally cold air into much of the
country through the weekend. Around here, one such disturbance
tucked in the flow appears to move nearby Friday. The Intermountain
West, as far south as Northern Arizona, will feel the coldest air
when compared to normal. For us, it simply reinforces chilly
mornings and tepid afternoon readings from the upper 60s to low 70s.

It still looks like the pattern will try to flatten out in about a
week, which could allow some shortwave ridging to build across the
Southwest ahead of Thanksgiving. This would warm us up a bit and
keep it relatively dry.

South-Central Arizona including KPHX, KIWA, KSDL, and KDVT; and
Southeast California/Southwest Arizona including KIPL and KBLH:

No major weather concerns will exist through Tuesday evening under
periods of high cirrus decks. In the Phoenix metro, typical wind
shifts will be more subtle than usual with an earlier shift to E/NE
Tuesday evening. Extended periods of light and variable winds may be
common through the early afternoon. In SE California, northerly
winds will be the most preferred direction with some increase in
strength late Tuesday afternoon.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Dry weather prevails through at least the next 7 days with
temperatures remaining below normal, with highs generally in the
upper 60s to low 70 degrees across the lower deserts. Lighter winds
return today and Tuesday, before another disturbance delivers a
round of windy conditions Wednesday. MinRH values through Tuesday
will generally range between 15 and 25% areawide, falling to 10-20%
by Wednesday and Thursday. The combination of windy conditions and
low RH values will likely lead to areas of elevated Fire Danger on
Wednesday over parts of SE CA/Lower Colorado River Valley. Morning
recovery will generally be from 25-60%, lowest on Wednesday morning.
