.SYNOPSIS...

Tranquil and somewhat cooler than normal weather will continue
through the middle of this week. A strong weather disturbance will
dive into the Southwest on Thursday, bringing gusty winds to the
area. Slight rain chances will accompany this system, particularly
from Phoenix eastward. Quiet weather returns Friday, and a quick
warming trend will commence this weekend.

.DISCUSSION...

Another quiet night is in progress across the Southwest. The last
vestiges of the weather system that brought breezes and virga to
portions of the area yesterday is now pushing east into New
Mexico. High pressure is arriving from the north to give us quiet
weather for the next 48 hours or so.

Under lots of sunshine the next couple days, chilly mornings will
translate to comfortable afternoons. Highs will range from the
upper 60s to low 70s this afternoon across the lower deserts.
Wednesday will be a few notches warmer. Most lower elevations will
exceed 70F, and places out in the Imperial Valley may get up close to
80F.

Ensemble guidance continues to show a vigorous PV anomaly
arriving from the north on Thursday. Looking at the jet stream
pattern, a speed max at 300 hPa will dive down the eastern flank
of the ridge which sits over the Northeast Pacific. As it moves
over Arizona, this energy will begin to phase with a branch of the
subtropical jet over Northern Mexico. At the surface, the
increasing upper-level diffluence will promote low pressure
development and frontogenesis across N AZ. High pressure will
nudge into the Great Basin, causing strong north winds to flow
down the Colorado River Valley by Thursday afternoon. Even here in
Metro Phoenix, westerly breezes ahead of the cold front will
become gusty at times.

This appears to be a more significant version of the disturbance
that moved across our area yesterday. Over much of the area, wind
gusts were on the order of 25-35 mph. The NBM 4.1 wind gust
product is highlighting an increasing threat of advisory level
gusts over much of the area. The probability of 40 mph gusts at
Blythe and Yuma are around 80%, decreasing to around 40% in
Phoenix.

As for precipitation opportunities, the short answer is that
tallies are highly likely to be light with this disturbance. NBM
median precipitation totals are still coming up at 0 for Phoenix,
and up to 0.05" in Gila County. Peeking at the 90th percentile
(10% chance of occurrence), Phoenix gets up to around 0.1" and
Gila County receives up to 0.25". A little snow may mix in over
the highest terrain (above 5,000 feet) - but this currently
appears inconsequential for our CWA. Notably, this may later
become a significant storm system somewhere in the Eastern or
Central U.S.

One last short-lived batch of cold air advection will follow the
cold front on Friday, keeping temperatures a few degrees below
normal to end the work week. Phoenix should hold in the mid/upper
60s. Breezes will turn lighter, and sunshine will be in
abundance. 

For the extended... a powerful 180 KT jet streak traversing the
Pacific is still forecast to aid in dislodging the stubborn ridge
just off the West Coast. As the pattern begins to progress, modest
ridging will move over the Southwest U.S. this weekend into early
next week. Consequently, the odds of reaching 80F or higher over the
lower deserts will skyrocket by Sunday and Monday. For Phoenix, we
have around a 70% chance of reaching 80F on Sunday, and it becomes a
near certainty by Monday. The Colorado River and Imperial Valleys
have the highest chance (50-60%) of reaching 90 degrees early next
week. The warmest day of this pattern appears to be next Tuesday
(3/15). At the very least, mid/upper 80s will be common around
Phoenix by that time.

No aviation concerns through the TAF period. Skies will remain
clear to mostly clear with only FEW high clouds during the
evening. Mostly light winds will generally favor the NW-W by early
afternoon into the evening. A normal shift to the E-SE is
expected tonight by around 05-07Z. After the W switch early Wed
afternoon windspeeds will increase to 8-11 kts with gusts into the
teens through late afternoon.

Southeast California/Southwest Arizona including KIPL and
KBLH:

Skies will remain clear to mostly clear through the TAF period.
Wind directions will favor the N this afternoon and W-SW from
early evening into tonight at both terminals. Windspeeds will also
increase by early afternoon to around 10-12 kts with gusts of
15-20 kts at KBLH through the late afternoon. Light and variable
wind conditions will begin early Wed morning at KBLH as well.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Thursday through Monday:
A strong weather system will cause strong wind gusts across most
areas on Thursday. Localized gusts over 40 mph can be expected,
particularly over higher terrain and along the Colorado River.
Isolated rain is forecast from Phoenix into Gila County, but
amounts will stay at or below 0.1" in almost all areas. Cool, dry
high pressure returns Friday. It will then turn much warmer (and
remain dry) through the weekend into early next week. From Friday
onward, afternoon minimum humidity values will likely fall below
10% over our lower elevations.
