.SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday night. A broad upper level
trough is positioned over the PAC NW this morning with a parent
upper low spinning in Alberta. Moisture could arrive in the Central
Mountains as early as this afternoon, but most high-res models are
suggesting snow onset will be later this evening. There is enough
upslope forcing to justify some slight chance PoPs today. Either
way, snowfall amounts should be light. NBM 4.1 shows only a 25 to 30
percent probability of 2+ inches in the Sawtooth Range through
Tuesday afternoon. Similarly along the Big Hole and Centennial
Mountains, upslope flow will result in light snowfall this afternoon
with about a 20 to 25 probability of 2+ inches there. On Tuesday
night, a strong shortwave will rotate around the upper trough and
deepen across the PAC NW. As a result, snow will begin to intensify
somewhat, mainly over the higher terrain, and will expand more
broadly to lower elevations late Tuesday night.

Wind chill temperatures remain in the 20 to 30 below range across
the Arco Desert and adjacent valleys at forecast issuance. Current
wind chill warning is ongoing through 10 AM today. Hinsberger

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Monday.
A strong Canadian low will be starting to drop southward on Wednesday
into the Plains. This will help pull moisture south through our area
on Wednesday and bring much stronger winds, too. Not only will we see
snow and wind, but this system opens up the door for a blast of
frigid air behind it on Thursday. Starting with snow on Wednesday,
the highest totals are still expected in the mountains. By the time
snow is tapering off on Thursday, the NBM 4.1 highlights a 40-65
percent chance of at least 8 inches of snow in the Sawtooths, Bear
River Range, and Big Hole mountains. In the Snake Plain, we are
looking at about a 15-25 percent chance of at least 2 inches of
snow. Then, we have the wind. We can expect fairly widespread gusts
of 25-35kts, at least, with higher gusts definitely not out of the
question. In fact, the NBM 4.1 shows a 40-60 percent chance of gusts
greater than 48kts in the Snake Plain on Wednesday. The uncertainty
or current discrepancy between potential versus forecast gusts lies
within how well we can get winds to mix down to the surface.

After the snow and wind on Wednesday, we get the frigid cold on
Thursday. Almost everyone will start Thursday morning below zero. A
few spots in the western Magic Valley and southern most Southern
Hills could stay a couple of degrees above zero, but those will be
the warmest spots. Expect temperatures closer to negative 15-25
anywhere north of Idaho Falls. Wind chills will be even worse,
ranging from negative 20 degrees near Idaho Falls to almost negative
40 near the Island Park area. Wind Chill Warnings will likely be
needed across much of the area. Thankfully, this cold blast is short-
lived as we begin to warm up on Friday and highs head towards the
upper 20s to mid 30s by Christmas day.

The ECMWF and GFS begin to disagree more as we get into Friday and
beyond with the GFS bringing a shortwave through and some more
moisture on Friday which the ECMWF is not nearly as excited about at
this time. Weak ridging builds in on Saturday, drying us out a bit
before another push of moisture arrives arrives in the first half of
next week. It would be beneficial to any holiday travel plans to see
some dry time Saturday through Monday, so we will stay cautiously
optimistic at this time. AMM

.Aviation... This morning we are dealing with more BR and HZ than
FZFG like yesterday. As such, conditions have generally been
VFR/MVFR, but briefly dropping to IFR at times at IDA and PIH. This
will continue through the morning with overall VFR/MVFR conditions
after 16Z at all sites. Any snow today mostly stays in the higher
elevations, so will keep VCSH at DIJ throughout until around 01-02Z
timeframe when light snow looks more likely and impactful, dropping
VIS to borderline MVFR/IFR conditions. Any light snow at SUN in the
same time frame looks light enough to keep VFR conditions, at least
through this forecast period. Will introduce some VCSH around the
same time at BYI, PIH, and IDA, though confidence is lower. There is
quite a bit of dry air to get through for any snow to reach the
ground with more moisture not arriving until Tuesday. Winds today
won't be too impactful with gusts around 15kts possible. AMM

With single-digit temperatures forecast in the coming week, rivers
and streams will continue to ice over. As ice buildup moves
downstream, it may cause rapid rise in water levels. As temperatures
begin to rise, ice may continue to move downstream.

People are urged to use caution along rivers and streams as the
rapid increase in flows are dangerous. Keep children and pets away
from riverbanks. Those living or recreating near rivers and streams
should remain cautious. High stream flows can quickly overpower you
and cold water could can lead to hypothermia in minutes.
