.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wed night. High pressure will
gradually give way over the next 24-plus hours to a low moving
through the northwest. The first effect will be to boost the wind
to adivisory levels Tue evening, then later there is a strong
potential to push to High Wind Warning levels during late Tue
night into Wed morning. There is strong upper level support at
500mb reaching 45KT to 65KT, 700mb wind of 30 plus KT and later
35-plus KT late Tue night, good cold air advection, and a pressure
gradient across southern Idaho that reaches 11mb after midnight on
Tue night. The things going against the high wind expectations are
the fact that it occurs at night when there is less mixing of the
lower atmosphere and the slow movement of the surface low during
the evening and even to around midnight. A High Wind Watch has
been issued for Tue night through Wed morning. The wind speeds
will easily cause blowing dust that will likely close Interstate
15 in the Roberts, ID, area just north of Idaho Falls, and create
a blowing dust hazard on Interstate 84. Areas north of the Arco
Desert and Craters of the Moon will experience much less wind. By
Wed morning, precipitation will spread from west to east across
the forecast area, with the heaviest amounts in the Sawtooths and
west side of the Wood River drainage, the northeast corner around
Island Park, and the Bear River range. This is not expected to
reach Winter Weather Advisory criteria, with about 6 inches in the
Sawtooths, and 3 to 5 in the other areas. For Wednesday late
morning through Wed night, light and more scattered precipitation
continues, mostly in the mountains and highlands. Wind will
decrease to the 20 to 30 mph range for the sustained wind.

Afternoon temperatures will warm Tue prior to the front's
arrival, then drop on Wed about 15 to 20 deg F compared to Tue. On
Wed night, Stanley will see below zero temperature readings and
the more densely populated areas will be in the 20s. Messick

.LONG TERM...Thursday through next Monday. Temperatures will
decrease by another few degrees Thursday following the cold front
passage, leaving high temperatures running around 10- 15 degrees
below normal. Precipitation will be confined to the eastern and
southeast highlands by early Thursday, wrapping up and exiting to
the east by early evening. Weak high pressure will briefly build
back in late Thursday through Friday and therefore we may see
partial clearing of skies during this timeframe. A very slight
warm up is possible Saturday before the ridge flattens due to the
influence of a Canadian low. However, there is still uncertainty
regarding the timing and track of the low, so the specifics could
still change over the next few days. EPS is about 24 hours quicker
in bringing the trough further south over southern Idaho. This
timing difference is reflected in the ensemble clusters, as well.
Forty-four percent of total ensemble members feature some degree
of weak high pressure remaining over the region through late
Saturday, with the other solutions showing the influence of the
upper trough reaching us sooner. At this time, precipitation looks
to be impressive with this event and models continue to show
favorable Integrated Water Vapor Transport (IVT) into the area.
The National Blend is introducing 50-80% PoPs across the region
again Saturday and Sunday. NBM v4.0 is indicating a 50- 70%
probability of at least 8" of snow through Monday evening across
the Sawtooths and along our borders with Montana and Wyoming.
Winds will also increase with this incoming system, with 20-30 mph
winds likely area-wide. Cropp

.AVIATION...VFR conditions are likely through early tomorrow,
with winds gradually increasing throughout the day ahead of and
along a cold front.  Peak winds are expected late night tomorrow and
overnight into Wednesday morning, with gusts in excess of 40 mph
across much of the region.  Winds are not expected to be quite as
gusty at KSUN.  Precipitation chances will overspread the region
beginning early tomorrow afternoon and exit the region to the east
