What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter weather advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter weather advisory went out at Feb 3, 12:24 AM EST, 2 hours 46 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Feb 3, 12:24 AM EST, 2 hours 46 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
1224 AM EST Thu Feb 3 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will begin shifting offshore tonight and into
Thursday. A slow moving frontal boundary will slowly approach from
the northwest on Thursday. Waves of low pressure will track along
the front as it slowly moves through the area Thursday night and
Friday. Arctic high pressure then builds in for the weekend. One or
two weak waves of low pressure may pass south of the region early
next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 1215 AM, dense fog covers the entire area from the I-95
corridor south and eastward. Farther to the north, some fog is
developing although it is mainly patchy for now however this is
expected to worsen through daybreak Thursday. The Dense Fog Advisory
remains in effect for the entire area.

Otherwise, increasing air mass moisture, warm air advection aloft,
light surface flow and a still robust snowpack essentially presents
a perfect combination for fog development. Significant visibility
reductions are likely tonight. Temperatures should tend to hold
nearly steady overnight.

For Thursday, the frontal system will slowly approach as an
elongated wave of low pressure begins to organize over the Tennessee
Valley. This wave will move along the front and will eventually help
to drive it southward through the region. That will not happen
during the day, however, as we remain on the warm side of the front.
Temperatures will again rise above seasonable levels, especially
over southern New Jersey and Delmarva where rain will hold off the
longest. In those areas, low to locally mid 50s are expected. For
the rainfall, it will depend quite a bit on where you are. With the
front running parallel to the mid-level flow, rain will be quite
slow to move east tomorrow. Much of eastern Pennsylvania and
northern and central New Jersey will likely see steady light rain
for most of the day. However, southern New Jersey and parts of
Delmarva may stay dry for much of the day. In areas where rain moves
in, visibility should improve somewhat. Dense fog could linger a bit
longer further southeast. No ptype concerns during the day Thursday,
with temperatures warm enough to support rain even up north.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Thursday night through Friday continues to be the main focus
for the forecast period with the cold front and associated
precipitation. The timing of the front, along with the timing of
the lowering temperatures will be critical on the outcome of
the P-types. If the precipitation moves out fast enough, there
will be limited time for freezing rain to occur before changing
over to sleet or snow. Our current thoughts remain pretty
similar to what has been forecast the last several days.
Precipitation will begin as rain everywhere as temperatures will
be above freezing at the start of the period Thursday evening.
For most areas, the warmest temperatures will occur between
sunset Thursday and midnight, before dropping through the
overnight into daybreak. As the temperatures fall, all
indications are that the precipitation will transition to
freezing rain for a period, then eventually mix with and change
over to sleet and briefly snow. Almost all areas will likely see
at least a brief mix or change over, although southern New
Jersey and southern Delaware and Maryland have the lowest
chance. We will issue a Winter Storm Watch for Carbon and Monroe
where the greatest threat for a longer period of accumulating
freezing rain is expected. Ice accumulation amounts of around a
half an inch are possible. Farther south, less than a quarter of
an inch is expected, so we will not issue a watch at this time,
although if any freezing rain continues to be expected, an
advisory may be needed at some point.

Another concern with this system will be the actual liquid
precipitation amounts. Before any areas change over to freezing rain,
periods of moderate rainfall will occur with this storm. Rainfall
amounts of 1-2 inches, with the highest amounts across much of
eastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey are expected. The ground
is pretty hard, if not frozen, so runoff will be pretty efficient.
In addition, snow melt will also add to additional runoff. While
flash flooding is not expected, and neither is significant river
flooding, rises on area creeks, streams, and rivers will occur, and
there likely could be some poor drainage flooding issues for some
areas as well.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
While the overall weather pattern is fairly active into next week
across, the sensible weather is forecast to remain on our periphery
for much of the upcoming week.

For the weekend, as the cold front that moves across the are Friday
continues to move out to sea, high pressure builds out of the Ohio
River Valley and into the northeast states Saturday into Saturday
night, before shifting offshore of the Canadian Maritimes on Sunday.
The high will nose its way down into the Mid-Atlantic on Saturday,
before losing its grip on the area Sunday. Dry weather is expected
on Saturday with the high pressure being in most control. On Sunday
however, a coastal low pressure system is forecast to develop
offshore of the southeast coast, but remain far enough to our south
to prevent any precipitation from affecting our area, although it
does get close, so we will need to keep an eye on the storm in case
it moves farther north.

From Sunday into Monday, an area of low pressure is forecast to move
across the Great Lakes region and weaken as it moves into the
northeast states. Meanwhile, its associated cold front will weaken
as it moves eastward into the region as well later Monday into
Monday night. The forecast is for most of the moisture to dissipate
or lift north of the area as the front approaches, so most
precipitation should end before reaching the area .

On Tuesday, high pressure builds across the central Appalachians on
Tuesday, before shifting offshore of the east coast Tuesday night.
Dry weather is expected to persist for Tuesday and Tuesday night.

Wednesday continues to be a dry forecast as we will be between two
systems; one an approaching cold front from the northwest, and
another coastal system that is forecast to develop offshore of the
southeast coast. We will need to continue to watch the forecast for
the coastal storm in case it moves closer to the area.

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of tonight...Widespread LIFR conditions due to dense fog and
stratus, however RDG and ABE are expected to drop to LIFR by 08z.
Light and variable winds to locally calm. Moderate confidence.

Thursday...LIFR to IFR conditions due to fog and stratus, however
conditions should improve some by late morning or early afternoon.
Rain overspreads the area, especially near and north/west of the PHL
metro. Light and variable winds, becoming southeast to south around
5 knots. As a strengthening low-level jet (40-50 knots) crosses the
area, low-level wind shear will occur especially in the afternoon.
Low confidence with the timing details of at least some
improvements.

Outlook...

Thursday night-Friday...MVFR and IFR conditions expected with periods
of rain Thursday night into Friday morning, before precipitation
changes over to freezing rain, sleet, then possibly snow from west
to east during the day before ending Friday afternoon. South to
southwest winds 10-15 knots with gusts 15-25 knots ahead of a cold
front, then north to northwest 10-15 knots with gusts 15-25 knots
behind the front.

Friday night-Saturday...Conditions improve to VFR. Winds remain
northwest 10-15 knots with gusts 15 to 25 knots.

Saturday night-Sunday night...VFR conditions expected. Light and
variable winds 5 knots or less.

Monday...VFR conditions expected early, but ceilings may lower to
MVFR later in the day, especially for northeast Pennsylvania and
northern New Jersey. Northwest winds 5-10 knots with gusts 15-20
knots.

&&

.MARINE...
Through tonight... Seas have been slow to decline, still running 5
to 6 ft, and so the Small Craft Advisory on the Atlantic coastal
waters remains in effect, currently scheduled to run through 10PM.
After that time, sub-SCA conditions are expected as seas drop to
around 4 ft. Southeast wind 5 to 10 kt, gradually becoming southwest
overnight. A Marine Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for all of our
local waters. Dense fog is already apparent on webcams at the coast,
and is likely to remain in place and spread into Delaware Bay
tonight. Significant visibility reductions are likely.

Thursday... Mainly sub-SCA conditions, however, seas will be close
to 5 ft especially by later afternoon. In addition, south-southwest
winds will increase to 10 to 15 kt with some gusts over 20 kt likely
by evening. Finally, the Marine Dense Fog Advisory is currently
scheduled to run through 1PM, with significant visibility reductions
likely.

Outlook...

Thursday night-Saturday...Small Craft Advisory level winds are
expected to develop Thursday night ahead of a cold front, then
continue through Saturday behind the cold front. Seas will also
remain 5 feet or greater through this period.

Saturday night-Monday...Conditions are forecast to lower below
advisory levels, although winds could gust around 20 knots and seas
approach 4 feet.
