Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 1247 PM EST Wed Jan 5 2022 .SYNOPSIS... A low crosses the Great Lakes region today. Weak high pressure will briefly build over our region tomorrow, before a coastal storm system impacts the area Thursday night into Friday. High pressure is once again expected to affect the area Saturday, before a cold front approaches Sunday into Sunday night. High pressure returns early next week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... A warm advection pattern across the region today. We can expect a rather cloudy day as milder and humid air continues to move in aloft under the chilly surface air. The WSW advisory has been cancelled. Warming through the region with any remaining pcpn in the form of rain or drizzle. Thinning of the clouds W/SW may continue to progress east into the CWA as the afternoon progresses. As we go through tonight, the aforementioned upper-level trough lifts across New England however a larger trough will be remain back to the west. A cold front will shift to our east this evening with the wind turning from the west and northwest. Some increase in the cold air advection tonight in the wake of the front will result in temperatures dropping into the 20s to low 30s overnight. Drier air will also advect in and the cloud cover should start to erode. && .SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/... During the day on Thursday, we'll be in between the departing low over Atlantic Canada and the developing low (which will become the coastal low) over the southeastern U.S.. Tranquil conditions are expected. Low level westerly and northwesterly flow will result in cold air advection, with most of the region staying in the 30s through the day. This will set the stage to already have cold air in place when the precipitation arrives from the coastal low Thursday night. Thursday night and Friday remain the main focus through this period. The low that develops over the southeastern U.S. on Thursday will quickly shift off the NC/VA coast Thursday night and speed northeast - positioned off the coast of Maine by mid day Friday. What has changed: Deterministic guidance continued the trend of a slightly further southeast track (further off our coast). While it still appears likely that we will have measurable precipitation across the region, the higher precipitation amounts would be off the coast with this track. The other change is that there appears to be better agreement among deterministic guidance with a faster timing of this system. Precipitation type and amounts: As mentioned above, cold air advection during the day on Thursday will mean that cold air will already be in place before the precipitation arrives. And with the center of the low likely to stay well southeast of our region through this period, we aren't going to see any warm air intrusion. Consequently, this should be mostly a snow event, though some rain could mix in along the coast if the precipitation lingers through much of the morning on Friday. As for snow amounts, latest forecast is generally lower with overall amounts, and the corridor of higher amounts has shifted southeast: 1 to 3 inches for areas north and west of the fall line, 2 to 4 inches along and southeast of the I-95 corridor. Lower amounts possible at the Delaware Beaches which has the highest chance of rain mixing in. The main source of uncertainty with this is if we will see any mesoscale banding which could result in a narrow corridor of higher amounts. However, even if mesoscale banding does occur, the window of opportunity for it should be rather brief (given the speed of the system), so it may not be significantly above the broader snow amounts. All that being said, warning level impacts or snow amounts appear unlikely at this point, so will hold off on issuing a watch. An advisory will likely be needed for the 95 corridor and coastal plains, but given the current advisory will hold off on issuing a second one at this point to keep messaging simple. Timing: As mentioned above there was better agreement with a faster solution among the deterministic models, with the prime period for impacts now expected to be between midnight and 6 AM, though snow could begin Thursday evening and light snow may linger (especially at the coast) through mid day Friday. Temperatures and winds: Through out this event, temperatures should range from the mid 20s to lower 30s. Assuming the current track and timing continue, the tightest pressure gradient, and thus strongest winds will occur after most of the snow has fallen - generally late Friday morning through Friday afternoon. Gusts up to 35 mph will be possible along the coast. Friday night: depending on the depth and extent of the snow pack, Friday night could be very cold as skies clear and winds diminish. Lows in the teens are expected across the region. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... High pressure briefly passes over the region on Saturday. Tranquil, but relatively cold weather is expected. High temperatures are expected to range from the mid 20s to mid 30s on Saturday. A cold front Sunday into Sunday night could bring the next chance for precipitation, but most of the precip should be ahead of the front, so it may be mostly rain except in the Poconos. Following the departure of the low pressure system early on Monday, high pressure will settle in across the region through the middle of next week. A large long wave ridge will propagate across the North American continent early next week. The large area of high pressure associated with this ridging will slowly move across the United States during the early part of next week bringing cold and dry conditions to the region. These conditions will likely persist through most of the work week next week. As the ridging moves off to the east, it will begin to break down and weaken, inducing a short wave trough. At this time, there is still uncertainty of the depth and location of this trough. However, a low pressure system will form out ahead of the short wave and it will likely bring at least some precipitation to the area late next week. && .AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
