.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure builds over our region today. It shifts off shore
by tomorrow as a low crosses the Great Lakes region. Weak high
pressure will briefly affect the area Thursday, before a
potential storm system impacts the area Thursday night into
Friday. High pressure is once again expected to briefly affect
the area Saturday, before a cold front approaches Sunday into
Sunday night.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
The flow aloft turns more zonal today with cold surface high
pressure cresting our region. The progressive flow however will
result in the flow backing to more southwesterly during tonight
well ahead of the next system.

A very cold early morning with many places down into the teens as of
this writing (single digits in parts of the Poconos). A strong
surface high will crest across our area this morning with a zone of
subsidence and very dry air in place. Some cloudiness in
central Pennsylvania early this morning may also clip parts of
our far northwest zones before dissipating. Otherwise, plenty of
sunshine is expected although some high clouds will start to
arrive by this afternoon as warm air advection to our west
starts to spread eastward. It will be cold today with highs in
the low to mid 30s (colder in the higher terrain), however less
wind will occur due to surface high pressure sliding across our
area. Did go a little colder with the high temperatures today
especially where extensive snow cover is present. Given the
progressive nature of the flow, the surface high will be
shifting to our east and northeast this afternoon resulting in a
developing light southwesterly wind.

As we go through tonight, an amplifying trough from the Midwest to
the Great Lakes will increase the warm air advection across our
area. This will be enhanced some as a southwesterly low-level jet
arrives. Clouds are expected to increase, with the thicker clouds
arriving late and especially closer toward daybreak Wednesday. The
combination of strengthening low-level warm air advection, the
arrival of a southwesterly low-level jet and a weak disturbance, may
develop some light precipitation closer to daybreak Wednesday. An
examination of the forecast soundings indicate just the lower levels
moisten up while it is still dry aloft and therefore some freezing
drizzle or drizzle would be possible (especially across parts of New
Jersey). However given the initially rather dry low-level air mass
in place today the guidance may be bringing in the low-level
moisture to quickly and therefore opted to keep it dry. It will be a
cold night, although not quite as cold given the warm air advection
aloft. Temperatures may start to rise some closer to daybreak
especially in Delmarva into southern New Jersey, however snow cover
may slow this process. Also, where snow cover remains and winds are
light to calm with a later arrival of clouds, may set the stage for
an area of stronger radiational cooling during the first half of the
night. For now, leaned toward the colder guidance especially in the
snow cover areas.

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Not one, but two systems expected for the later half of the work
week. The first system will be well to our northwest (the low will
be centered over the Great Lakes into southeastern Canada).
Consequently, the main lift associated with this system will not be
over our region, however a combination of warm air advection and a
leading low level short wave trough will lead to a brief chance for
precipitation, primarily along the coastal plains. The moisture with
this chance for precip will be shallow, with little, if any ice in
the clouds. It appears that most of the precip should arrive once
temperatures are above freezing, so it should be a plain rain event.
However, some models are showing the boundary layer moisture
increasing shortly after sunrise. I think this is too fast given the
light low level winds. However, if this were to occur, some freezing
rain would be possible.

We'll be in between the two systems Wednesday night into Thursday, so
expect tranquil and near normal (temperature wise) conditions during
this time.

The main focus is on the Thursday night into Friday time period. A
potent but fast moving low pressure system should develop in the
southeastern U.S. and progress off the coast around NC/VA. With this
track, our region is in the favored location for mostly snow (though
depending on how close the center of the low stays to our coast,
there may be a brief period of rain or sleet at the start of
precipitation. Models came into better agreement with the track of
this low (as compared to yesterday when some models were still
showing a weak/surpressed system), however there remain some timing
differences. Most guidance seems to be in agreement that this will
be a quick impact (no more than 12 hours of precip), but there is
question if it will be from late Thursday night through mid day
Friday, or be primarily during the day Friday. The storm system is
not yet fully within the period for our snow amount forecast, so we
will have more details on that later today.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
High pressure briefly passes over the region on Saturday. Tranquil,
but relatively cold weather is expected. High temperatures are
expected to range from the mid 20s to mid 30s on Saturday.

The next opportunity for precipitation after Friday's system is
likely to occur over the course of the day on Sunday with snow
transitioning to rain.

A large scale trough will be moving across the northern United
States and southern Canada. Ahead of this trough will be a mid-
latitude cyclone with a central low located in southern Canada.
As the low moves eastward it will become occluded and cutoff. A
secondary low will form further south ahead of trough as it
continues to move to the east. As the system moves through the
region, precipitation will likely begin as snow, particularly
west of the I-95 corridor. A transition to rain will occur from
southeast to northwest as temperatures gradually increase before
precipitation tapers off Sunday evening.

A large scale ridge will build in behind the system with an
associated area of high pressure. Conditions will be cold and dry
across the region through at least the mid-week. Another low
pressure system is likely to form late in the week as the high
pressure moves off to the east.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Today...VFR. Northwest winds 5-10 knots becoming locally light
and variable for a time this morning, then becoming west to
southwest early this afternoon. Moderate confidence.

Tonight...VFR overall, however increasing and lowering clouds
especially overnight. Southerly winds near 5 knots or light and
variable. Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Wednesday...Starting VFR, but MVFR or lower conditions are possible
through the day as rain moves into the region. KRDG and KABE may be
west of most of the precipitation. South southwesterly wind 10 to 15
knots. Low confidence.

Wednesday night...Conditions should return to VFR through the
evening as the precipitation and low clouds move out of the region.
Southwesterly winds becoming westerly. Wind speeds 5 to 15 knots.
Moderate confidence on the overall pattern, but low confidence on
the timing of the return to VFR conditions.

Thursday...Mostly VFR conditions expected. Westerly winds 5 to 15
knots. Moderate confidence.

Thursday night through Friday...MVFR or lower with snow possible.
Light and variable winds Thursday night, becoming northwesterly 10
to 20 knots with higher gusts on Friday. Low confidence.

Friday night and Saturday...Returning to VFR conditions with 5 to 10
knot northwesterly winds. Low confidence.

.MARINE...
As of 530 AM, cancelled the Small Craft Advisory for Delaware
Bay as the winds are gradually diminishing.

High pressure slides across the region this morning with a
diminishing wind. Prior to this though, Small Craft Advisory
conditions will continue a while longer. The advisory goes until
4 PM today for all of the New Jersey and Delaware Atlantic
coastal waters where it will take the seas longer to subside
below 5 feet. The winds turn west and then southwesterly later
today and especially tonight, with even some increase later
tonight however conditions should remain below Small Craft
Advisory criteria tonight.

Outlook...

Wednesday...winds and seas will be close to SCA criteria, but given
that the direction is southwesterly (a typically unfavorable
direction for gusty winds this time of year), confidence is low that
we will reach criteria.

Thursday...Winds will shift to northwesterly Thursday morning, but
speeds should be below SCA criteria.

Thursday night through Friday night...With an approaching storm
system, we will likely see a prolonged period of at least SCA
conditions, and possibly getting close to gale conditions.

Saturday...Once winds and seas diminish Saturday morning, they
should stay below SCA criteria.

Lingering minor tidal flooding is expected through 2 PM across
the upper Delaware Bay shores, but otherwise no additional
