.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure remains centered to our northeast through today,
before weakening and shifting east tonight into Thursday. An
arctic front slowly approaches from the northwest Thursday, then
as a couple areas of low pressure track along it the front
crosses our region late Thursday night and especially Friday.
Arctic high pressure builds in Saturday into Sunday, then low
pressure may track near or off the Mid-Atlantic coast later
Sunday into Monday. Weak high pressure should arrive for
Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Early afternoon update...
The earlier Dense Fog Advisory was cancelled as visibilities have
improved significantly, though it took the entire morning in some
areas. Otherwise, we are seeing more sunshine and milder
temperatures this afternoon. Cloud cover remains more prevalent
towards the coast, and this is likely to continue. Previous
discussion follows...
A mid level ridge axis was located off the East Coast this
morning. It will continue to drift farther out to sea.
Meanwhile, surface high pressure extended southwestward from
Atlantic Canada along the lee of the Appalachians. The high and
its trailing ridge axis are forecast to pull away to the east
today and tonight, losing their influence over our weather.
As precipitation begins to approach from the west tonight, more
clouds will overspread our region. A light southerly flow will
bring additional low level moisture and patchy fog may develop.
Rain should begin to arrive in our region from the west after
midnight. There is a very brief period at the onset when
temperatures could be cold enough for spotty freezing rain in
the Poconos. However, temperatures will remain steady or rise
slowly late tonight, so the precipitation type is expected to be
primarily rain.
Highs today are forecast to favor the 40s, with lows tonight
generally in the 30s. The wind should remain light.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Summary...Mild air surges into the area Thursday, then
temperatures tumble later Thursday night and especially on
Friday. Rain changes to some ice and snow for at least portions
of our region before ending.
A ridge in the western Atlantic supports surface high pressure
there while an upper-level trough is forecast to gradually
amplify eastward from Central Canada to the Midwest and mid-
Mississippi Valley. Strengthening south to southwest flow occurs
during Thursday and Thursday night ahead of the upper-level
trough and accompanying arctic front. A southwesterly low-level
jet on the order of 50-60 knots will enhance the low-level warm
air advection ahead of the arctic front. This results in warmer
air being transported northward across our entire area. This
will boost temperatures Thursday into the 40s and 50s across
nearly the entire area, with these temperatures potentially
peaking Thursday night prior to the arctic front arriving. Large
scale ascent from the incoming upper-level trough and augmented
by the low-level jet and strong warm air advection will result
in rain Thursday from west to east. There is a fairly brief
window where some localized freezing rain could occur at the
onset in the Poconos if temperatures are at or below freezing
before rising commences. The eastern areas may not see much rain
until Thursday night as the precipitation looks quite slow to
move eastward due to the orientation of the front running
parallel to the mid level flow. Adjusted the PoPs some more to
reflect this.
As we go through Thursday night and Friday, the southeastward
progression of the arctic front occurs and this will be key in
the timing of the initial shallow cold air seeping eastward. A
sharp temperature gradient will exist with this front, and at
least a couple ripples of low pressure will be tracking along
it. Along and north of the wave and west of the front,
temperatures will drop rapidly supporting rain changing to
freezing/frozen precipitation. The temperature drop could also
start resulting in a rapid freeze-up across our western zones
especially during the day. The model forecast soundings indicate
the low levels quickly cool with a deep warm layer aloft
gradually cooling with time. This points to a period of freezing
rain then to sleet then to snow before ending. The guidance is
trending faster with the colder air arriving, although the GFS
still looks to be the coldest. We went ahead and sped up the
colder air arriving and therefore a quicker changeover
occurring. Some fog may occur for a time as the warmer air along
with higher dew points move over especially lingering
snowcover, although this may be limited due to the presence of a
strong low- level jet.
It looks like the guidance is coming into some better
agreement, however there remains uncertainty regarding how
quickly the low- level cold spreads southeastward during Friday.
The greatest chance for a more prolonged period of
freezing/frozen precipitation will be from the I-78 corridor
northward. As are result, some accumulating ice is expected
across these areas. Some snow/sleet accumulation is expected
although the snow amounts look to be limited. This however will
depend on how quickly the warm layer aloft erodes and how much
moisture remains before ending. We continue to think this looks
like an advisory level event for parts of our area, however
amounts will depend on the cooling of the column and amount of
precipitation falling after colder air arrives. There is an
increasing chance now that the rain changes to some freezing
rain, sleet and/or snow into the I-95 corridor and possibly to
the coast before ending.
As we go through Friday night, the front moves offshore and the
precipitation is expected rapidly end in the evening. There is
a risk for a rapid freeze-up Friday night as many surfaces will
be wet as temperatures plunge into the teens and 20s.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Summary...Arctic air mass in place Saturday with some
moderation Sunday into early next week.
Synoptic Overview...A sharp but fast moving upper-level trough
pivots to our east Saturday morning with the flow turning more
zonal in its wake. Arctic high pressure builds in during
Saturday before shifting to our northeast and east Saturday
night into Sunday. The next upper-level trough gradually
progresses from central Canada southward to the mid-Mississippi
Valley Sunday, then moves into the East early next week. Surface
low pressure sliding across the Great Lakes will toss a cold
front our way early next week, however surface low development
may take place off the Southeast U.S. or Mid- Atlantic coasts.
This secondary development will depend on the upper- level
troughs axis orientation and amplitude, as most guidance keeps
the trough axis positively tilted resulting in the offshore low
quickly moving out to sea. It is the late weekend and early next
week time frame to watch given that some guidance has shown a
more pronounced storm, however low confidence remains.
For Saturday and Sunday...Arctic high pressure builds across
our region during Saturday before gradually shifting to our east
and northeast into Sunday. As a result of the arctic air mass,
high temperatures only look to be in the upper 20s and low 30s
(teens in parts of the southern Poconos). A northwesterly breeze
will add a wind chill factor despite a mostly clear sky. A very
cold night expected Saturday night as winds drop off and
radiational cooling quickly occurs (lows in the teens with
single digits across the north).
For Sunday and Monday...As an upper-level trough gradually
nears the East Coast, will need to monitor an offshore
baroclinic zone as surface low development is indicated on most
guidance. However, the placement, track and strength of it is
uncertain especially whether any interaction takes place with
the northern stream. If the upper- level trough axis remains
more positively tilted, then the system will remain weaker and
quickly track out to sea. Given the uncertainty, will continue
to carry rather low PoPs.
For Tuesday...An upper-level trough is forecast to generally
still be overhead with a frontal zone well offshore which then
trails westward well to our south. Weak surface high pressure
should be sliding eastward across our area. Temperatures look to
be a little colder compared to Monday given the presence of the
upper-level trough and also in the wake of a cold front.

.AVIATION /19Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Through this afternoon... Conditions have improved across the area.
While there are a few lingering pockets of IFR, mainly MVFR to VFR
should prevail for the next few hours. Winds mostly light and
variable but favoring light southeast if anything. Moderate
confidence.
This evening and tonight... CIGs and VSBYs are likely to lower
again, especially from the Delaware Valley eastward through New
Jersey. An extended period of dense fog is likely at most of the TAF
sites including PHL. Winds mostly light and variable. Moderate
confidence; multiple TAF AMDs are likely but confidence in fog
formation is greater than normal.
Thursday... Continued mainly IFR or lower as fog and stratus lingers
and with rain gradually moving in from west to east. Light and
variable winds early, becoming mostly S to SSW at 5 to 10 kt. As a
strengthening low level jet moves overhead, LLWS development is
expected during the late morning through afternoon, likely affecting
all the TAF sites but especially near and west of PHL. Moderate
confidence.
Outlook...
Thursday through Friday night...MVFR/IFR conditions, then the
conditions improve Friday night as precipitation quickly ends.
Rain for all areas Thursday, then rain changes to freezing rain
and sleet Thursday night into Friday at RDG and ABE. The
changeover should occur into the I-95 terminals Friday morning
and possibly to MIV and ACY by Friday afternoon. Southerly winds
around 10 knots Thursday, becoming northwest Thursday night
into Friday behind a cold front. Low-level wind shear may occur
Thursday into Thursday night as a southwesterly low-level jet
around 50 knots moves through. Low confidence with the details
and timing of precipitation types.
Saturday and Sunday...Mainly VFR. Northwest to north winds
around 10 knots Saturday, becoming light and variable Saturday
night and Sunday. Moderate confidence.
