What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter storm watch went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter storm watch went out at Jan 27, 12:31 AM EST, 2 hours 42 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jan 27, 12:31 AM EST, 2 hours 42 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
1231 AM EST Thu Jan 27 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
Strong high pressure near the Great Lakes will gradually shift
eastward, cresting over our region early Thursday before moving
offshore by Thursday night. A strong coastal storm will begin
developing off the Southeast coast on Friday, and to pass east
of our region on Saturday. High pressure returns for the end of
the weekend and early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Today will be the calm before the storm (literally and
figuratively). An elongated surface high will build over the
region before shifting northeast and off shore by this evening.
Consequently, should have light and variable winds to start the
day, then settling out of the southwest as the high shifts
northeast. Should have mostly sunny conditions to start the day
thanks to deep synoptic scale subsidence. However, as the mid
level ridge shifts east, we could start to see increasing cirrus
clouds in response to the approaching mid level short wave
trough and surface cold front by late this afternoon.

The only precipitation chances within this period come late
tonight as the cold front and mid level surface trough edge
closer. Even though both of these features are likely to stay
well west of our region, some of the light snow may encroach on
the southern Poconos and NW NJ very late tonight. Dry air will
be slow to erode, so any snow should be very light with little
accumulation expected by day break Friday.

As for temperatures, the developing low level southwesterly flow
will help with a modest warming trend for day time temperatures,
and especially for overnight lows. During the day, highs should
be in the 20s to mid 30s, around 5 degrees higher than
Wednesday lows. Overnight, the combination of increasing clouds
and the southwesterly flow will mean lows will generally be in
the 20s (though the southern Poconos and far NW NJ may drop into
the upper teens). This would be 10 to 20 degrees higher than
temperatures Thursday morning.

&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
***Rapidly deepening low to move northward off the coast Friday
night into Saturday bringing potentially significant impacts to
 parts of the area***

The main story for this period will be the big storm off the coast.
In the meantime, to start the period off Friday morning the area
will be situated between an approaching cold front from the north
and west with the incipient storm just beginning to take shape
off the S/E U.S. coast. Going through the day Friday, cold front
will gradually move across the area NW to SE while low pressure
organizes itself well to the south. There may be a bit of light
rain/snow around during the day but it won't be much. Highs
range from the 20s to low 30s across the north to the mid/upper
30s from the I-95 corridor and points south/east.

For Friday night, that's when our attention really shifts to the
storm system and its impacts in our region. At this point, the
forecast models are in fairly good overall agreement that rapidly
deepening low pressure will track from a point roughly 100 or so
miles off the Carolina coast Friday evening NNE to a point east of
Cape Cod by Saturday night. This track puts our forecast area near
the western edge of the most impactful part of the storm and there
continue to be some differences between the guidance on the precise
track and speed of this system which could have big impacts on our
forecast snowfall amounts. A track a bit farther N/W would bring
higher snow amounts while a track farther south/east would mean
lower amounts. What we are confident on though is that other than a
bit of rain possibly mixing in at the onset this will be an all snow
event. Also, best chance for heavier snow / higher impacts near the
coast closer to low's track. The 12z NAM and the 0z ECMWF continue
to be most bullish on a track just a bit farther west with heavy QPF
back towards the I-95 corridor while most of the other guidance (12z
GFS/GEM) including the 12z EC is a bit further east. I also have
some concerns that as the low rapidly deepens by later Friday night
that the winds turn N/NW drawing the drier arctic air in that will
be banked N/W of the area. The upshot is that despite the high
confidence in this storm developing, confidence regarding specific
impacts in our area is still moderate at best and not quite high
enough for a Winter Storm Watch to be hoisted at this time.

In terms of storm's sensible weather impacts, expect the steadier
snow to develop south to north Friday evening into the overnight. In
fact there could even continue be a bit of rain mixed in over
southern NJ and Delmarva into the evening so we really don't expect
this to be impactful for the Friday evening commute. It's into
the overnight that the snow should start to pick up in intensity
with the best chance of heavier snow being near the NJ coast
closer to the track of the low. Northerly winds will also be
increasing through Friday night with gusts of 30-40 mph possible
by late at night near the coast. Combined with the falling snow
this could result in significantly reduced visibilities.

By 12z Saturday, rapidly deepening low will be positioned several
hundred miles east of the mid Atlantic coast with snow on its
western flank continuing to affect the area. This should continue to
affect at least much of our NJ counties potentially into eastern PA
and parts of Delmarva with snow through a good portion of the
morning before it starts to wind down in the afternoon as the low
pulls north of our latitude with winds becoming more NW. Strong
winds may continue to be an issue right through the day with
gusts of 30-40+ mph possible near the coast and 20-30 mph
inland. Again, this may cause issues with blowing and drifting
snow but the degree of this will be contingent on amounts too.

In terms of forecast storm total snowfall with the system, early
thinking at this point is that I-95 corridor from around Philly NNE
to near Trenton will see amounts in the 4-7 inch range with the
potential for 8-12 inches near the Jersey shore. Amounts decrease
heading N/W of the I-95 corridor and it's worth noting this could be
one of those setups with a fairly sharp western gradient in snowfall
due to drier air advection from the N/W. In fact our N/W counties
from Berks County NE through the southern Poconos may see little to
no snow accumulation. But again, it needs to be stressed this storm
is still more than 48 hours out and has yet to even develop yet so
expect changes to the snowfall forecast. A final note, as N/WN Winds
ramp up into Saturday and colder air gets drawn in, temperatures
Saturday will be holding in the teens (north) and 20s (south).
Combined with the winds this could result in wind chills in the
single digits to sub zero (north) right through the day
Saturday.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As the low pressure system exits the region Saturday night into
Sunday, gusty conditions will likely persist particularly for
coastal areas and marine zones. As a result, the Gale Watch that has
been issued is valid through 1 AM EST Sunday. Winds will gradually
die down during the daytime on Sunday. As cold air moves in behind
the front, temperatures will be below normal for the early part of
the week before warming to around normal by mid-week. Conditions
through the middle of the week will be dry as a longwave ridge of
high pressure builds in from the west bringing with it a more stable
atmosphere.

&&

.AVIATION /05Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Through today... VFR conditions expected. Light and variable
winds, becoming southerly 5-10 knots. High confidence.

Thursday night...VFR conditions expected, though mid level
clouds (with ceilings between 4000 and 9000 ft AGL) will be
increasing starting this evening. Winds should be light. The
direction may be variable at times, but should favor
southwesterly. Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Friday (daytime)... Mainly VFR initially. Sub-VFR possible by
afternoon with light snow overspreading the area. Winds mostly light
and variable. Moderate confidence.

Friday night-Saturday... Sub-VFR is likely, especially near and
east of PHL, as a winter storm affects the region with snow.
Winds should turn northeast at 5 to 10 kt Friday night. Winds on
Saturday will back to north then northwest and increase, with
strong winds possible...gusts of 25-35 knots possible. Low
confidence owing to uncertainty in the potential winter storm.

Saturday night-Sunday... VFR conditions returning by early Saturday
night. Northwest flow with speeds gradually diminishing. High
confidence.

Monday...Mainly VFR with winds light and variable. High
confidence.

.MARINE...
Winds and seas will remain below SCA conditions thru Friday
dawn with fair weather expected.

Outlook...

Conditions will be below Small Craft Advisory levels during the
day Friday but the main story will be very strong winds and
increasing seas expected Overnight Friday night through
Saturday. Northerly winds gusting 40 to 45 knots will be
possible for Saturday and so we've issued a Gale Watch for all
our waters. Winds diminish Saturday night into Sunday.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
We have been keeping an eye on the Saturday morning high tide as it
relates to the expected coastal storm. Fortunately, conditions are
lining up to preclude the development of any significant tidal
flooding.

A north northeast wind is forecast to develop on Friday evening,
with wind speeds increasing on Friday night. Ekman transport will
begin to push water toward the coast. However, the period of time
with an onshore push leading up to Saturday morning's high tide will
be somewhat limited (less than 12 hours). We will need a surge of
+1.2 to +1.4 feet to begin causing minor flooding along the coasts
of Delaware and New Jersey at that time. Based on the latest
guidance, we should exceed those values by only a few tenths of a
foot, mainly in southern Delaware and in Cape May County, New
Jersey. As a result, we are anticipating the potential for
widespread minor flooding at those locations. Only spotty minor
flooding is expected along the rest of the New Jersey coast and
along Delaware Bay. There should be no flooding along the tidal
Delaware River or on the upper eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay.

Even as the wind backs to the northwest for Saturday evening, water
levels along the coast should remain elevated. Saturday evening's
high tide is the lower of the two daily high tides, so no flooding
is forecast at that time.

Some of the guidance is hinting at a lingering round of minor
flooding with Sunday morning's high tide before the water begins to
drain away from the coast.
