.SYNOPSIS...
Several areas of low pressure will track across the region
overnight through Sunday. A cold front passes through the area
Sunday night, and then low pressure passes off the New Jersey
coast on Monday. High pressure builds in from the west and moves
offshore on Wednesday. A coastal low may affect the area late
Thursday through Friday. High pressure returns to close out the
week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A convective line developed to our west this evening. It
extended across southeastern Pennsylvania and northeastern
Maryland around 9:00 PM. The line should continue to progress to
the east northeast rather quickly. However, it may bring a fast
quarter to half inch of rain in addition to the overall
precipitation from the main system. There has been some isolated
lightning with the line. The high resolution models have been
hinting at a slow weakening trend as it moves across northern
Delaware and New Jersey.

A strong shortwave will pass through the region overnight and
with it will be additional rain, with some of it potentially
being moderate to heavy. This wave helps to drag the cold front
down into our area, where it looks to get hung up across the
region overnight.

With clouds and rain across the region and continued southwest
flow (and warm advection ongoing), expect overnight temps to be
extremely mild and warm. While forecast lows are projected to be
into the 50s through much of the region with some mid to upper
40s across the northern zones, with areas across southern
Delaware and nearby Maryland into the low 60s overnight. We may
not see much of a temperature change through the night and in
some places we may even see temperatures rise overnight. With so
much moisture around and nearly no surface flow, fog will once
again be a concern overnight. However, with the rain around, it
may not be as widespread as last night so we will need to
monitor the observations and trends through this evening to see
if another advisory will be needed.

The rain should come to end Sunday morning as dry air starts to
filter in aloft. Most of Sunday should then remain dry.
However, the boundary stalls across the region until a wave
forms along it and finally pulls the front through the area on
Sunday. As it moves through, expect another round of showers
though we may have some spotty showers around through the day
due to the boundary in place. Skies will remain quite overcast
but we will still have the southwest flow across the region.
While high temperatures may end up being in the upper 50s to
lower 60s, it is likely that those temperatures occur much
earlier in the day.

As the front gets pulled to the east Sunday afternoon/evening,
we will see the winds turn from the warm southwest flow to a
much chillier northwest flow, becoming gusty as we head towards
the evening.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Cold front works its way through the region Sunday night, and
strong CAA will be underway. Temperatures drop into the 20s and
30s by Monday morning. Low pressure will track towards the Mid-
Atlantic, then will track east out to sea on Monday.

The 12Z/01 GFS remains the most robust in terms of how far back
precip spreads and how much QPF falls. The 12Z/01 NAM is the
farthest south and east, and has little, if any, precip over the
area. The 12Z/01 RGEM and the 12Z/01 ECMWF almost split the
difference. QPF looks to be minimal, and enough cold air should
spread to the south and east to allow for precip to change to
snow Monday morning. PoPs are low, so will keep snow
accumulations capped at less than 1/2 inch, and will keep the
snow confined to southern Delaware and extreme southeast New
Jersey, generally from Cape May to Seaside Heights and not much
farther inland. Several things to consider: ocean temps are in
the 40s to around 50, and the ground remains quite warm and wet
from recent rainfall. So snow accumulations would be limited to
colder surfaces, depending on how fast the cold air arrives, and
snowboards.

Highs drop to below normal levels, topping off in the 20s in
the southern Poconos, and otherwise in the 30s.

High pressure builds towards the Mid-Atlantic Monday night.
With cold air advection, clear skies, and light winds, can
expect strong radiational cooling conditions. Will side with the
colder NBM25/NBM50 guidance for lows in the teens and low 20s.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
High pressure builds over the area on Tuesday, and then moves
offshore Tuesday night. Broad low pressure will track through
the Great Lakes, and a deep upper trough with closed low digs
through the north-central portions of the country. Some strong
shortwave energy associated with that will lift north along the
New Jersey shoreline, and this will be enough to kick off at
least a chance for precip over New Jersey, and possibly back
towards the Delaware River and into the southern Poconos. Ptype
will mostly be rain, but cannot rule out a brief shot of wintry
precip at the onset Wednesday morning. Precip strengthens
offshore as the trough passes through New York and New England
Wednesday night.

Behind the departing low, cold air advection develops over the
area. After highs several degrees above normal on Wednesday,
temps fall back closer to normal Thursday. Things then get
interesting on Thursday night. Cold air advection strengthens
Thursday night and Friday, and temperatures fall into the 20s
and 30s. Meanwhile, another deep upper trough digs down into the
Midwest and Gulf Coast. Low pressure develops out ahead of it
over the Southeast and Mid- Atlantic, and then lifts north
towards the Northeast. Since this is in the day 6-7 time frame,
there are many details that need to be sorted out. The GFS has a
farther offshore track compared to the ECMWF. As a result, the
12Z/01 GFS has a swath of snow over Delmarva, southern New
Jersey, and the Delaware Valley. With the 12Z/01 ECMWF taking a
more inland track, there would be more mixing, if not plain
rain, over those southern and eastern areas, and snow would be
mainly on the other side of the Delaware River and into the
southern Poconos. The 12Z/01 Canadian is well offshore, and only
has minimal QPF over Delmarva and extreme southeast New Jersey.
Could this be the first significant snow of the 2021-2022
season? It remains to be seen, but as of this moment, it is a
non-zero chance.

High pressure builds in to close out the work week and into the
first half of next weekend.

.AVIATION /02Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Overnight...IFR/LIFR ceilings continue across the region with
MVFR or lower visibilities through 04Z with a brief window of
improvement to MVFR through 08Z as slightly drier air advects
northward south of the warm front. Rain will continue through
06Z before scattering out to more showery after this time
through 12Z. Light and variable winds. LLWS is likely through
06-07Z at all terminals except KABE and KRDG. Moderate
confidence.

Sunday...IFR conditions likely to start Sunday with improvement
to MVFR late morning/early afternoon and the possibility of VFR
by late afternoon. Southwest winds 5 to 10 knots becoming west
to northwest Sunday afternoon/evening and increasing towards
evening with gusts around 25 to 30 knots. Moderate confidence
with lower confidence on timing of categorical changes.

Outlook...

Sunday night through Monday...Sub-VFR in rain early, with
improving conditions late. A brief period of SN possible at KACY
around 12Z Monday. Conditions become VFR late Monday morning.
NW winds 10-15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt. Low confidence.

Tuesday...VFR. Light S winds. High confidence.

Wednesday...Sub-VFR conditions possible in rain. SW winds
around 10 kt. Low confidence.

Thursday...Overall, VFR during the day. Sub-VFR conditions
possible in rain and/or snow Thursday night. High confidence for
Thursday, low confidence Thursday night. LGT/VRB winds,
becoming W around 10 kt Thursday night.

.MARINE...
Dense fog on the area waters continues as warm air continues to
move across the colder waters, where the dew points remain
higher than the current water temperatures. Expect fog to
continue to be a problem overnight and into Sunday morning.
Therefore, the marine dense fog advisory extends through 9am
Sunday.

Seas build and winds increase overnight across the area waters
and SCA conditions will become prevalent. SCA goes is in effect
across the southern waters and it expands northwards overnight.
Winds may briefly gust around 25 knots on the Lower Delaware Bay
but it looks like such a brief window of opportunity and have
held off on issuing any headlines there.

Winds should drop off for a period of time on Sunday but
increase again as we head into Sunday night.

Outlook...

Sunday night through Monday...Lingering VSBY restrictions in
rain, possibly changing to snow Monday morning. NW winds 15-20
kt with 25-30 kt. A brief period of gale force winds is possible
late Sunday night/early Monday morning on the southern NJ, DE
ocean, and DE Bay waters. A Gale Watch remains in effect. A SCA
will otherwise be needed.

Monday night through Tuesday...Sub-SCA conditions.

Wednesday...SCA conditions possible.

Thursday...Sub-SCA conditions expected.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
The morning astronomical high tides will remain elevated into
the early part of the new week due to the new moon.

Even with the development of a southwest wind overnight, enough
water buildup should remain along the coasts of Delaware and
New Jersey to result in another round of minor tidal flooding on
Sunday morning. As a result, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in
effect for the coastal counties, as well as for Kent County
(Delaware) and Cumberland County (New Jersey), from 5:00 AM
until noon on Sunday.

A cold front is forecast to pass off the coasts of New Jersey
and Delaware late on Sunday. The wind is expected to shift
briefly to the northwest before becoming north for late Sunday
night and much of Monday. The northerly wind and the associated
Ekman transport should work to push water toward the coast on
Monday. Widespread minor tidal flooding is again likely with
Monday morning's high tide and another advisory should become
necessary.

The wind is anticipated to finally back around to the northwest
on Monday night. However, there may not be time for the wind to
push enough water away from the coast to preclude one final
round of minor tidal flooding on Tuesday morning.

Widespread minor tidal flooding does not appear imminent on far
upper Delaware Bay, the tidal Delaware River or the upper
eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay at this time. We will continue
to monitor water level trends to see if any advisories become
necessary for those areas.
