Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 128 PM EST Wed Nov 30 2022 .SYNOPSIS... Strong cold front will cross the region late today. High pressure will build in following the cold frontal passage Thursday and Friday. The next cold front will sweep through during the Saturday night period, with high pressure returning Sunday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Latest analysis depicts strong low pressure near the south side of Hudson Bay, with strong cold front extending across New York, Pennsylvania southward to the Gulf Coast. This strong system will continue on a general east-northeast trajectory thru the forecast period. Southerly flow ahead of the approaching cold front has brought much milder air north across the region today ahead of the front, so temps have risen into the low to mid 50s across much of the area. Temperatures should continue to rise for the next couple of hours until the front arrives leading to temps topping out in the 50s to lower 60s this afternoon. Rain remains spread over much of the region though it is has not been heavy to this point. Forecast wise, our concerns revolve around the line of low- topped convection at the front itself late this afternoon, mixing down the strongest winds aloft, followed by synoptic winds behind the front with pressure rises of 5-7 mb in 3 hours. This linear feature is continuing to move across Pennsylvania and Maryland. An analysis of both observations and the latest guidance continues to suggest that the storms should stay just below severe limits as they move through the region this afternoon. A portion of the line in western Maryland has become briefly severe at times indicating that a marginally severe environment is still possible. There may be brief heavy downpours with the convective line along the front, but they should be too brief to result in any significant flooding. However, at this point in the season, there are a lot of leaves down, and some storm drains may be clogged, so localized street flooding could result. Guidance also continues to imply synoptic wind gusts after the front should stay just below wind advisory limits for the most part, mainly in the vicinity of 40-45 mph. So, have not changed existing headlines, keeping the wind advisory confined to the NJ shore where winds off the waters should be stronger ahead of the front than elsewhere. While the afternoon will be windy, expect strongest winds after frontal passage, not ahead of it, so tweaked forecast grids to account for this. Temperatures will crash behind the front late this afternoon and tonight, with wind chills plunging quickly as well. By late tonight, temps for most will be below freezing, with wind chills about 10-15 degrees lower. Quite the shock from the near or above 60 degree readings many will see this afternoon just before the front. && .SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/... At this point, the Thursday and Friday period appear to be the most tranquil of the next week. On Thursday, the high will begin to build in from the southwest. However, at least for the first half of the day, a tight pressure gradient will remain in place, so winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph are expected until winds finally begin to drop off in the afternoon. By Thursday night, with the colder air entrenched over the region, light winds, and clear skies, temperatures should drop to at least the 20s for much of the region, which is about 10 degrees below normal. By Friday however, low level flow shifts to southerly, so a warm up begins again. Highs are expected to range from the upper 30s to lower 50s, which is near normal for this time of year. With the building high and dry air advection, expecting dry conditions across the region. Lake effect snow showers are possible in southern NY and North Central PA on Thursday with the strong northwesterly flow regime, but at this point, it appears unlikely that those snow showers will reach as far southeast as the southern Poconos. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... As mentioned by the previous shift, there are several differences between models and poor run to run consistency with the two systems we are watching in the long term. The fist system is a cold front crossing our region either Saturday or Saturday night, and the second is a potential warm front/cold front combination early in the work week next week. With the Saturday/Saturday night system, most models depicting much faster timing, with the front now depicted to be well off shore by Saturday night. Given the poor run to run consistency, not very confident this trend will hold, so have a mention of rain for a longer period than what is likely to occur. The precipitation should be all rain. Given the strong and fast dry air advection with the front, expect all of the precipitation to occur in the warm sector ahead of the front. We will have at least one tranquil and dry day on Sunday before turning our attention to the next system. With the next system, there is currently a 24 hour spread in the timing of precipitation impacts for our region. The timing differences appear to be mostly the consequence of differences in how the mid and upper level pattern evolves. The GFS is the most progressive, keeping both the low departing our region (responsible for the Sat system) and the low approaching our region as open wave troughs at the mid an upper levels. The ECMWF appears to be one of the least progressive solutions, depicting both systems, not only becoming closed lows, but also becoming negatively tilted during the Monday and Tuesday time frame. The CMC is in between. Currently I'm inclined to favor a solution near the CMC and ECMWF, as hemispheric analysis looks as if there are currently 5 Rossby waves. This typically means a progressive, although not excessively progressive pattern. If this holds true, this would favor precip arriving in the Monday night/Tuesday time frame instead of the Monday/Monday night time frame. For now though, I've stayed close to a blend of guidance given the uncertainty. Depending on the timing, there remains some risk for a cold air damming set up with the onset of precipitation, but that is very uncertain at this point. && .AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Today... Primarily IFR conditions have taken over for most of the region as a strong cold front approaches. Latest guidance times frontal passage between 20z-22z for the Lehigh Valley terminals, 21-23z around the I-95 corridor terminals, and 22z-00z for the South Jersey terminals. Southerly winds will continue to increase ahead of the front with surface gusts up to around 30 kts possible. Winds will abruptly change to westerly and may gust up to 40 kts briefly with frontal passage. Seeing a heavier line of showers develop out over Central PA which will track east. This could drop visibilities briefly in addition to bringing a short period of heavy rain. Moderate confidence. Tonight...Rain will quickly end with conditions returning to VFR behind the front late today, but gusty WNW winds with gusts 20-30 kts likely continue most of tonight. High confidence. Outlook... Thursday...VFR. NW winds 15 to 20 kts, gusting to 20 to 30 kts becoming light overnight. Moderate confidence. Friday...VFR. Winds becoming Southerly 5 to 15 kt. Moderate confidence. Saturday...A period of MVFR and possibly IFR conditions possible with ra. SW wind 10 to 20 kt; abrupt shift to W or NW late in the day or Saturday night. Low confidence, especially in timing and extent of rain. Sunday...VFR. NW wind 5 to 10 kt. Moderate confidence. && .MARINE... Increasing low-level jet will result in increasing winds over the waters today, with gales expected by late morning. Gale warning remains in effect. Cold front will result in an abrupt shift from southerly to westerly late this afternoon, with gales continuing behind the front into if not thru tonight. Stronger winds are possible if a line of squalls develops right along the cold front, though confidence in this scenario is not high - however, have included slight chance thunderstorms in the forecast in case these do develop. Outlook... Thursday: Winds should subside below gale force early in the morning, but could remain above 25 kt for most, if not all of the day. Friday: Once winds and seas subside below SCA conditions on Friday morning, they should remain below SCA through Friday night. Saturday: Southwesterly winds once again increase above 25 kt, on most of the waters. Widespread SCA conditions are expected, there is a chance that some of the area could see gale force. Sunday: Once winds and seas subside below SCA criteria, should stay below for the remainder of the day and night. && .TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING... Elevated anomalies on the waters are expected to build briefly ahead of the strong cold front moving in late today, helped along by gale force southerly winds. Its possible a few sites, particularly Perth Amboy, Sandy Hook, Bivalve and Reedy Point, make it to advisory level minor flood stage early this afternoon, with additional sites making it to sub-advisory minor flood stage. Holding off on any advisories for the time being til the solution becomes clearer.
