.SYNOPSIS...
Strong high pressure will remain centered well to our southwest
through the weekend before building in for Monday and Tuesday. A
cold front will move across our area this evening, then a secondary
cold front moves through early Sunday. As high pressure becomes
centered more to our north Wednesday and Thursday, low pressure and
its associated cold front looks to arrive Friday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A mid level short wave trough was located over the upper Ohio River
Valley this afternoon. The feature will progress to the east with
its axis forecast to pass over our region in the 600 PM to 900 PM
time frame. Showers will continue to develop in advance of the short
wave and they should impact our area between about 500 PM and 900 PM.
The precipitation type will be dependent upon location and
precipitation rate. Most of the precipitation will favor snow to the
northwest of the Interstate 95 Corridor based on the expected
temperatures profile. For the Interstate 95 Corridor, boundary layer
temperatures should be warm enough for mainly rain. However, where
precipitation rates increase, the rain could change to snow for a
time. The potential for light mixed precipitation is then
anticipated to carry itself all the way to the coast.
Low level lapse rates are forecast to remain relatively steep as the
short wave approaches our area. As a result, the shower coverage is
expected to increase in our region this evening. Some of the snow
shower activity could become moderate to heavy for a brief time
along and to the north of the Interstate 78 Corridor, affecting the
visibility. It continues to remain uncertain as to whether the
scenario will produce any localized snow squalls. We will continue
to monitor the developments to our west. Since it will be a quick
hitting event, any snow accumulations should be an inch or less.
Once the short wave passes to our east, the sky cover is expected to
go scattered. Lows tonight should be mainly in the 20s with a west
wind 5 to 10 MPH.
Surface high pressure is forecast to nose into our region from the
southwest for Saturday. We are expecting a mostly sunny sky with a
west to southwest wind 10 to 15 MPH. Highs should be generally in
the upper 30s and 40s.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Very cold and breezy/windy through Sunday, then less wind Monday and
a little warmer but still below average.
The persistent upper-level trough centered to our west is forecast
to amplify eastward Saturday night and Sunday. This will drive a
cold front across our region Saturday night and early Sunday
morning. The moisture looks rather limited with this and therefore
we are anticipating a dry passage.
Strong cold air advection occurs for a time in the wake of this
front with 850 mb temperatures tumbling to around -13C. This front
will deliver a rather cold air mass for Sunday, along with very dry
air as dew points drop through the teens and even into the single
digits. A rather tight pressure gradient is forecast to overspread
our area Sunday, and the model forecast soundings show steepening
low-level lapse rates beneath a gradually lowering inversion. This
will result in breezy to windy conditions with west to west-
northwest winds gusting generally into the 30-35 mph range. Daytime
temperatures will struggle to get out of the 30s for much of the
area (colder in the southern Poconos), and this combined with the
wind will put wind chill values in the teens and 20s during the day
Sunday.
The shot of very cold air looks to be brief as the core of it starts
to move out with the trough and warm air advection aloft starting
Sunday night. As this occurs and as surface high pressure starts to
build closer from the southwest, the winds are expected to diminish
quite a bit Sunday night. It is not out of the question that some
lake effect snow showers extend close to our southern Pocono region
Sunday afternoon with the strong west-northwest flow. As of now
however, continued with a dry forecast given how dry the air mass is
forecast to be. A cold Sunday night is expected as the winds
diminish and temperatures drop into the low 20s and teens for much
of the area overnight.
As we go through Monday, the flow turns more zonal aloft with
surface high pressure mainly sliding to our south. This will keep a
west to eventually southwest surface flow, however while there will
still be a breeze it is expected to be much less compared to Sunday.
The air mass will be moderating, but it will still be on the cold
side with daytime temperatures warming into the low to mid 40s for
much of the area. Another cold night Monday night, but not as harsh,
with lows dropping into mostly the 20s.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Summary...Moderating temperatures with the potential for a storm
system to move through around Friday.
Synoptic Overview...A more zonal flow aloft across the east Tuesday
and Wednesday will then give way to a sharpening upper-level trough
from the west during the second half of the week. This will favor
some moderating temperatures but eventually will open the door for a
storm system to arrive around the Friday time frame. The guidance
differs with the amplification of the late week upper-level trough
as it tracks eastward. Some guidance digs the trough much farther
south and therefore it is slower to arrive in the east, while some
other guidance is not as amplified and therefore is faster with its
eastward progression.
For Tuesday and Wednesday...A more zonal flow aloft will support
surface high pressure over our area, although it will become more
centered to our north later Wednesday. This will result in
moderating temperatures (precipitation-free), with Wednesday looking
to be the warmest day as high temperatures get into the low to mid
50s across much of the area.
For Thursday and Friday...A significant upper-level trough is
forecast to amplify south and eastward during this time frame across
the Plains and Great Lakes. This will result in a ridge building
downstream, supporting surface high pressure to our north and
northeast. The model guidance differs with the amplitude of the
upper-level trough as it tracks eastward. The guidance that is more
amplified is slower in bringing surface low pressure eastward with
it. In addition, the parent surface low that rides up the Ohio
Valley to the eastern Great Lakes may occlude with a secondary low
developing on the triple point near our region. All of this
development will determine the strength and timing of the system.
Given the uncertainty, kept the forecast rather close to the
National Blend of Models (NBM). This brings in some low PoPs
Thursday night with the higher (chance) PoPs on Friday.

.AVIATION /20Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Into this evening...An area of snow showers and rain showers will
move eastward across our region between about 22Z and 02Z. KRDG and
KABE are most likely to be impacted by snow showers, low ceilings
and reduced visibility. However, the potential exists for rain
showers and snow showers at our remaining TAF sites, as well. West
wind around 10 knots gusting to 15 to 20 knots. Medium confidence.
Overnight...VFR with scattered cloud cover. West wind 5 to 10 knots.
High confidence.
Saturday...VFR with scattered cloud cover. West wind around 10 knots
with gusts of 15 to 20 knots. High confidence.
Outlook...
Saturday night and Sunday...VFR. Southwest to west-northwest winds 5-
10 knots Saturday night, increasing to 15-20 knots with gusts to 30
knots Sunday (diminishing Sunday night). Moderate confidence.
Monday and Tuesday...VFR. Southwest winds around 10 knots Monday
becoming light and variable Monday night, then westerly 5-10 knots
Tuesday. Moderate confidence.
Wednesday...VFR. Northwest winds around 5 knots. Moderate

.MARINE...
The west wind is forecast to increase this evening in the wake of a
passing mid level short wave. As a result, we are anticipating
another period of wind gusts around 25 knots tonight. We have
extended the Small Craft Advisory until 4:00 AM Saturday.
A west to southwest wind 10 to 15 knots with gusts near 20 knots is
expected for Saturday. Waves on our ocean waters should be 2 to 3
feet, with waves on Delaware Bay at 2 feet or less.
Outlook...
Saturday night and Sunday...Small Craft Advisory conditions probable
with a period of gales (gusts to 35 knots) possible. A Gale Watch
has been issued for Sunday for all zones except the upper Delaware
Bay. The winds diminish Sunday night.
