.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front extended from the Great Lakes to the central Gulf
Coast early this morning. The boundary will progress to the east
and it should pass through our region during the late afternoon
and early evening hours. High pressure is forecast to slide
from the southern Appalachians tonight to the waters off the
Middle Atlantic Coast on Friday. A cold front is expected to
approach from the northwest on Saturday and it should arrive
late in the day. High pressure is anticipated to follow for
Sunday. Another cold front is forecast to progress toward our
region from the west early in the new week and an area of low
pressure may develop along the boundary. High pressure is then
expected in its wake for the mid week period.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Ongoing forecast working out well with minor adjustments to
winds and temps. A mid- level ridge axis will move offshore
this morning as the southwesterly surface gradient increases a
bit. Increasing clouds this afternoon.

A negative tilt mid-level trough axis associated with a
broad closed low across the upper Midwest will sweep across the
region this afternoon. At the surface, a cold front will
approach the area from the west and is expected to pass through
during the course of the mid to late afternoon. Ahead of the
front, warm advection will continue amid the modest
southwesterly flow. Southwesterly winds will increase after
daybreak to around 15 mph with gusts to around 25 mph.
Temperatures will climb into the low to mid 80s again (away from
the coast and outside of the higher terrain) with highs pushing
20 degrees above normal. Most records appear to be safe as most
values are in the upper 80s to around 90 degrees.

The main story today remains the showers and thunderstorms
developing along the cold front as it moves through the region
this afternoon. The cold front should be sufficient to initiate
convection just to our west across the Susquehanna Valley by
late morning or early afternoon. MLCAPE should climb to above
500 J/kg along with deep layer effective shear around 35-40 kts.
DCAPE appears to be in the neighborhood of 600-800 J/kg and
lapse rates are modest around 6.5-7 C/km. The deep layer shear
vector relative to the cold front should favor a semi-discrete
to multi-cellular convective mode along the front, not likely to
evolve into a well defined line. I think the main threat with
the stronger thunderstorms that develop will be locally damaging
winds, but small hail is possible as well. SPC has maintained a
Slight Risk mainly along and northwest of I-95. The Slight risk
area lines up well with where the ingredients for the damaging
wind risk should all come together. This will be the zone where
the front will be pushing into the highest instability combined
with the peak daytime heating and shear. I should also mention
that PWs will climb to around 1.25 inches, so some brief
downpours should be expected with the heavier showers and
storms. Given the fast motion of the cells, QPF values around
only around a quarter of an inch or so.

Confidence in the timing of the convection is relatively high
given that the cold front itself will be driving the event. I
anticipate the convection to begin across the northwestern zones
around 2 PM and the front (and severe threat) should be
offshore by 7 PM. The mid-level jet to our northwest will
provide lingering forcing for scattered post-frontal showers
with embedded thunderstorms. This activity should wind down by
midnight or so. I did increase PoPs a bit after the frontal
passage to reflect this trend.

Temperatures will fall mostly into the mid to upper 40s tonight
with northwesterly winds diminishing as high pressure settles
briefly into the region. Skies will also gradually clear out
from northwest to southeast as the night progresses.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
A mid level low is forecast to slide from Ontario into Quebec
during the period from Friday into Saturday night.

The axis of a short wave trough rotating around the mid level
low is expected to pass overhead on Friday morning. There should
be little moisture associated with the system. Meanwhile,
surface high pressure will likely move eastward across Virgina
and North Carolina on Friday before sliding off the coast. The
air mass is anticipated to bring us a mostly sunny day with mild
temperatures. Highs are forecast to be mainly in the 65 to 70
degree range. Readings should not get much above the 60 degree
vicinity in the elevated terrain of the Poconos and along the
immediate coast. The wind is expected to become southwest to
south around 10 to 15 MPH.

As the high moves farther out to sea on Friday night it will
maintain a light southwest to south flow in our region. Lows on
Friday night are forecast to be mainly in the upper 40s and
lower 50s under a partly cloudy sky.

A cold front is expected to move from the eastern Great Lakes
and the Ohio River Valley on Saturday morning to our region late
in the day. We should see an increase in cloud cover and
scattered showers with the system. Conditions will likely remain
mild on Saturday ahead of the front, with highs similar to
those on Friday.

The clouds and scattered showers are forecast to move away to
our east on Saturday night along with the front. We are
anticipating some clearing along with a west to northwest wind
around 10 MPH. Temperatures should fall into the upper 30s to
middle 40s by daybreak on Sunday, with some readings in the
lower to middle 30s in the Poconos and in far northern New
Jersey.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Surface high pressure is expected to build down from Ontario
and the Great Lakes for Sunday into Sunday night, bringing cool
dry weather to our region.

The high is forecast to move away to our east and northeast on
Monday. Clouds and precipitation ahead of our next weather
system should begin to arrive at that time. However, it will
likely take the rain a while to overcome the retreating low
level dry air associated with the high. As a result, we will
mention only a low chance of rain for Monday, mainly in the
afternoon. Temperatures are expected to remain cool with highs
mostly in the 50s.

Low pressure is anticipated to move from the Great Lakes on
Monday night to the Saint Lawrence River Valley on Tuesday and
it will likely pull a cold front toward our region. It looks as
though the cold front will arrive late on Monday night along
with additional clouds and an increasing chance of rain. The
Canadian and the ECMWF continue to develop a low along the front
in the Middle Atlantic states on Monday night before lifting
the low into New England on Tuesday. The solution seems
reasonable based on the deepening mid level trough over the
eastern states and the unseasonably cool air mass. The GFS
appears to be a bit too late to the party, not really developing
the surface low until Tuesday morning in New England.

The mid level trough and the surface low are then expected to
lift away to our northeast, allowing high pressure to arrive
from the west for Wednesday.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

.Rest of the afternoon... Front will pass the terminals through
the evening. South to southwest winds 10 to 15 kts with gusts in
the 20 to 25 kt range preceding the front will shift to West or
Northwest behind it. Scattered showers and tstms will accompany
the front. As before, kept mostly VFR in the TAFS with lower
conditions in a tempo group centered around expected fropa time.
MVFR VSBYS (or perhaps CIGS) with tstms. medium/high confid.

.Tonight... Improvement to VFR after showers tstms end the
evening. West to Northwest winds 5 to 10 knt. Decreasing clouds
overnight. High confid.

.Friday... VFR. Mostly clear skies. West winds 10 to 15 kts
becoming Southwest during the afternoon. High confid.

Outlook...

Saturday...Mainly VFR. Afternoon and evening showers may
briefly reduce conditions to MVFR/IFR. Southwest wind increasing
to 10 to 15 knots with gusts of 20 to 25 knots, becoming west
late in the day. Medium to high confidence.

Sunday...VFR. Northwest wind 10 to 15 knots with gusts of 20 to
25 knots. High confidence.

Monday...Mainly VFR with increasing clouds. A chance of light
rain in the afternoon. Northeast wind 5 to 10 knots, becoming
southeast. Medium confidence.

.MARINE...
Recent wind gusts across Delaware Bay have led me to issue a
SCA for Delaware Bay for the afternoon and early evening. Decent
gusts from the NW will follow the front.

Advisory conditions continuing through much of the daytime. Southerly
winds increasing to around 20 kts with gusts up to 25 kts and seas
4-5 feet. The winds will shift sharply to the northwest as a cold
front moves offshore late this afternoon or early evening. Showers
and thunderstorms are expected to accompany the frontal passage and
may cause locally stronger winds and seas. Any lingering showers will
diminish and move out to sea by around midnight or so. The winds will
diminish overnight to around 10 kts with seas 2-4 feet.

Outlook...

Friday through Monday...No marine headlines are anticipated.

.FIRE WEATHER...
A very dry air mass is forecast to build into our region for
Friday. Relative humidity values are expected to fall to near 20
percent in the afternoon. A south to southwest wind is
anticipated to increase to 10 to 15 MPH with gusts around 20
MPH, resulting in some fire weather concerns. We will see how
much rain falls this afternoon into tonight. Also, we will
likely coordinate with our fire weather partners at the state
level to see if any additional action will be necessary.

We are expecting showers on Saturday, mainly in the afternoon
and evening. However, breezy dry conditions will likely return
for Sunday and we may again need to focus on fire weather
concerns at that time.
