Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
237 AM EDT Thu Jun 9 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will pass through the area this morning dragging an
associated cold front through by this afternoon. High pressure
returns for Friday but then another low will affect the region
Saturday. High pressure will slowly return early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Today, Improving conditions this morning as low pressure across NY
state moves into New England and a trailing cold front crosses ern
PA/NJ/Delmarva. Any showers across northern/eastern areas will end
into the mid-morning as drier and cooler arrive on the scene. Clouds
will diminish from W to E as well with mostly sunny skies
developing. Some afternoon Cu/Sc may develop across the NW areas for
the afternoon. Gusty winds will develop with gusts 20 to 25 mph
expected from mid-morning into the afternoon. Highs will vary across
the area as the cooler air arrives with mid/upper 70s for highs N/W
and low/mid 80s for Delmarva and srn NJ.

Tonight, high pressure will ridge into the area from the KY/TN area
bringing drier and cooler air to our region. Skies are expected to
be mostly clear overnight. A little patchy fog is possible for rural
areas. Lows will be seasonably cool with low/mid 50s for N/W areas
and mid/upper 50s for Delmarva and the metro areas around
Philadelphia. Winds will be light from the W or NW.

&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Little change was made to this part of the forecast on the overnight
shift. Short term starts out with high confidence, then sees
confidence drop significantly. For Friday, high pressure will be
nearby, with drier air in place and temperatures starting out cool
before rising to comfortable levels in the 70s to low 80s. Skies
will start out fairly clear, but high clouds will thicken as the day
progresses.

Much uncertainty exists regarding the system moving in Friday night
into Saturday. Guidance has a relatively weak surface low developing
near the coast as a shortwave digs thru the base of the longwave
trough and heads east toward us but has generally trended towards a
weaker, less organized system. Still, odds favor at least some rain
developing near the mid Atlantic as the upper level wave moves
through, but the question is exactly where as some of the model
guidance now keeps the rain mostly south and west of the area.
Bottom line is that its quite possible a large swath of the region
ends up mostly or completely dry Friday night into Saturday.
However, clouds and the cool Canadian air mass will still result in
a cool day regardless of how much, if any, rain falls, though temps
might be a bit warmer than our current forecast where it ends up
dry.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Long term period starts out with a large trough over the eastern US
with a closed low in southern Canada. This feature only slowly
shifts eastward as we head into the work week, with the pattern by
Wednesday still featuring the low heights to the northwest. However,
a strong ridge will have built to our southwest by mid week, likely
centered over the Tennessee or lower Mississippi valleys.

For Sunday, with the broad longwave trough in place and a shortwave
pushing through our region, there will be the chance of some
scattered showers, especially across NW NJ and the Poconos.
Temperatures will return to near normal, however. Another shortwave
passes Monday, but this one looks to interact with slightly warmer
and more humid air, so the risk increase of perhaps even a isolated
thunderstorm. Once again, the risk is highest in NW NJ and the
Poconos.

By Tuesday, the trough starts shifting further east and the ridge
builds to our southwest a bit more, with the risk of any shortwave
energy passing overhead starting to diminish. The shower chances
reduce and temperatures will warm a few more degrees. Wednesday
however, there are hints that some sort of MCS may ride over the
ridge and drop southeast into the area. Still a long time to watch
this potential, so have some chance pops in. Temps likely warm a
little bit more as the ridge slowly gains a little more control,
though we will remain in northwest flow aloft.

&&

.AVIATION /07Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

.Today... MVFR/IFR early then rather rapid improvement back to VFR
14Z/15Z most areas. South winds early shifting SW then W by early
afternoon. Winds increasing to 12 to 15 kts with gusts around 25
kts.

.Tonight... VFR expected. Mostly just high clouds. Light W to NW
winds.

Outlook...

Friday...VFR with westerly winds 5-10 kts becoming light and
variable at night. High confidence.

Saturday...Possible sub-VFR with rain likely in parts of the area.
Winds SE 5-10 kts becoming NW at night. Low confidence.

Sunday and Monday...Mainly VFR but an isolated SHRA or TSRA may
result in sub-VFR conditions briefly, most likely ABE/RDG. Winds
mainly W 5-10 kts. Low confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
SCA flag will be raised on schedule (as per previous shifts) at 5 AM
for the ocean waters. I decided to expand the flag to the remaining
ocean zones but left out Delaware Bay attm. Some gusts 20 to 24 kts
for Delaware Bay possible. The ending time was extended a bit also
until 5 PM. Showers this morning then fair for the late morning,
afternoon and tonight.

Outlook...

Friday...Dry with southwest winds generally around 10 knots. Waves 2-
4 ft.

Saturday...Rain likely. Winds SE 5-10 kts becoming NW at night.
Waves 2-4 ft.

Sunday...Isolated shower possible. Winds S 5-15 kts. Waves 2-4 ft.

Monday...Isolated shower or t-storm possible. Winds SW 5-15 kts
becoming NW at night. Waves 2-4 ft.

RIP CURRENTS...

For Thursday, the longer period swell should start to weaken,
although there should be some higher wind waves under a south to
southwest wind. Conditions should still be on the rougher side,
especially for the New Jersey beaches, with a MODERATE risk for the
development of dangerous rip currents. A LOW risk for the Delaware
beaches.

For Friday, southerly flow in place with wave heights near 3 feet. A
MODERATE risk for the development of dangerous rip currents is
currently outlooked for New Jersey with a LOW risk for the Delaware
beaches.
