today as the upper low across MD will remain in place. A sfc low
offshore of Delmarva will drift away from the area today. This will
cause the pressure gradient to slacken and reduce the strength of
the onshore/moist flow, especially for the Norther areas. Clouds and
showers will remain for Delmarva and coastal areas of NJ/DE but the
NW zones will have frequent breaks in the clouds and limited rain
chances. Temperatures will likely be higher for these NW zones where
maxs may reach close to 60 degrees. Elsewhere, highs will be mostly
in the mid/upper 50s with maybe only some low 50s for the ern shore
of MD.
Tonight, the surface low that moved away Mon will return/reform back
towards its starting point by Tue. This means that later tonight the
onshore flow will resume and therefore more clouds/rains arriving
from the S to N overnight. The steady rains will probably be across
SE NJ and Delmarva by midnight and these rains will progress NW into
the Delaware Valley by sunrise. Lows tonight will be cool with low
40s N/W and mid/upper 40s for other areas. NE winds will increase to
10 to 20 mph with gusts near 30 mph, especially near the shore.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
The coastal low continues to linger across the area as an omega
block remains in place across the CONUS through at least Wednesday
before guidance finally indicates it breaking down and the upper
flow becoming more zonal. For Tuesday, the upper low will be placed
to our south with the surface low just to its east. The surface low
will slowly drift back northwest and become stacked under the upper
low as it's absorbed back into the flow late Wednesday.
As a result, conditions will remain wet, cool, and windy. Rounds of
shortwaves will continue to traverse around the upper low and
enhance the large scale ascent for continuing rain. As the low
slowly meanders back to the northwest on Tuesday, another stronger
push of moisture with PWAT values around 1.5" and the precipitation
shield will do the same. Current guidance indicates that the entire
area will get in on the rain for Tuesday and Wednesday, though
higher chances and amounts will be across Delmarva and southern New
Jersey where stronger forcing coincides with more moisture. For this
reason, a gradient in PoPs exists with decreasing values further
north and west of Delaware and southern New Jersey. Winds will
remain elevated on Tuesday as well as the pressure gradient remains
tight. The flow will stay out of the northeast with gusts to 40 mph
along the coast and gusts 25-30 mph further inland. Gusts are
expected to remain below wind advisory criteria (46 mph). Expect
highs in the mid 50s areawide.
For Wednesday, the low finally begins to push off to the east as
it's absorbed back into the flow. The result will be the
precipitation retreating to the east through the day. The first half
of the day will still likely feature rain across a lot of the area,
especially I-95 and south, but large scale ascent will decrease as
upper support and the surface low depart. Drier air will slowly try
to work in form the northwest, but moisture won't be in any hurry to
erode on the backside of the low, so some showers and gusty winds
are still possible into the evening along the coast with lingering
mid-level clouds elsewhere. Overnight, the pressure gradient will
relax, winds will decrease, and rain will come to an end. Highs
Wednesday will rebound into the mid 60s with lows near 50.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The overall pattern looks to become a bit more progressive for the
long term period. The surface low continues to move off to the east
on Thursday and give us relief from its associated effects. A
shortwave is progged to pass by to our north on Thursday, though it
doesn't look to impact our weather at this time as brief upper
ridging and nosing surface high pressure will result in a dry day. A
deep trough and closed low is set to approach from the west into
Friday.
Guidance indicates some favorable dynamics with this system in
the form of a developing jet streak off to our southeast Friday
night with vorticity advection around the base of the upper low.
Models are a bit split on how this system evolves though. The
GFS and GEM close the low off across Great lakes while the ECMWF
keeps an open wave as it passes by to our north. Either way, an
attendant surface low and cold front will likely pull through
the area sometime Friday. Offsetting the stronger dynamics could
be a lack of moisture with the front, so what, if any,
precipitation this front brings remains unclear. Held with NBM
PoPs for this period which keeps the area dry and continues a
drier trend. Residual lingering vorticity advection and
northwest flow behind the front will usher in a colder airmass
with lake effect showers possible as a result.
Ensembles indicate building high pressure with slowly rising 500 mb
heights for the latter half of next weekend, returning dry weather
with below average temperatures. Highs will be on a gradual decline
through the week from 70s on Thursday to 50s on Saturday.

.AVIATION /07Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Today... An offshore low will move away today so improvement through
the morning will last into the afternoon. VFR for the NW and
Delaware Valley sites much of the day. KMIV may improve to VFR this
afternoon, but KACY will likely remain MVFR/IFR much of the day. NE
winds 15 to 20 kts with G 25 kts. Medium confid overall.
Tonight... The offshore storm will rotate back towards the area
later tonight and bring another round of low clouds and showers
mostly to the SE sites for the late evening and overnight. The low
conditions may arrive for the Delaware valley sites for the pre-dawn
hours with low MVFR or IFR possible. NW sites should remain VFR thru
12Z Tue. Medium confid overall.
Outlook...
Tuesday - Wednesday...Low clouds, wind, and rain will continue.
Periods of MVFR/IFR expected. Northerly winds at 10-15 knots with
gusts to 25 knots. Moderate confidence.
Wednesday Night - Thursday... Conditions expected to improve to VFR.
Winds decreasing to northwesterly at 5-10 knots. Moderate confidence.
Friday... Mainly VFR. Southwesterly winds in the morning becoming
westerly in the afternoon at 5-10 knots. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
The low pressure system that is offshore of Delmarva will slowly
rotate away (S/SE) today causing the pressure gradient to slacken
somewhat. Tonight, a new low will form offshore and move back
towards the area. The pressure gradient will sharper tonight as this
occurs. The Gales will continue of the ocean zones today and tonight
as gusts 30 to 40 kts are expected. For the southern Delaware bay
zone, the Gale will be extended until 16Z for now and perhaps Gale
gusts will diminish by then. For the upper Delaware Bay, the Gale
will be allowed to expire at 6 AM followed by a SCA flag for today
and tonight. Showers today and rain tonight. Rough seas mostly 9 to
12 ft on the ocean and 2 to 5 ft for Delaware Bay.
Outlook...
Tuesday... Gale conditions expected to continue for coastal ocean
zones. A brief period of sub-Gale force gusts is possible in the
early morning before increasing again in the afternoon.
Northeasterly winds at 30-35 knots with gusts to 40 knots. Seas 11-
13 feet.
Wednesday... SCA conditions expected with Gale force gusts possible
for coastal ocean zones. Northeast winds at 25-30 knots with gusts
to 35 knots. Seas 10-12 feet in the morning, beginning to relax to 7-
9 feet in the afternoon.
Thursday... SCA conditions possible. Northwest winds at 10-15 knots.
Seas relaxing throughout the day to 3-5 feet.
Rip Currents...
Today and Tuesday... A continuation of the strong onshore flow and
E/NE swells with a longer period will continue to produce a powerful
surf. A HIGH risk for rip currents is forecast for today and
Tuesday. A High Surf Advisory will also continue into Tuesday.
The SRF forecast for the 2022 season will continue through
Wednesday, October 5.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Not expecting any additional tidal flooding on the northeastern
Chesapeake Bay. For the Atlantic coast, Delware Bay, and tidal
Delaware River, the forecast is on track. The only significant
change was to issue a coastal flood advisory for the tidal Delaware
river as confidence has increased in the potential for widespread
minor flooding with the high tide cycles Monday and Tuesday.
As for the southern shores of the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic
coast, few changes in the current forecast. Moderate tidal flooding
is expected within the coastal flood warning area with Monday
afternoon's high tide. By Tuesday afternoon, southern Delaware could
see levels approach major tidal flooding. Due to the prolonged
nature of the onshore flow, expect conditions on bay bays to get
progressively worse as compared to the ocean side with each
subsequent high tide.
Additional advisories or watches may be needed for the coming tide
cycles, so be sure to monitor the latest forecasts.
