.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure centered in Illinois and Indiana early this
morning will slide to the east and it is forecast to pass off
the Middle Atlantic coast tonight. Weak low pressure is
expected to pass eastward across the Great Lakes on Wednesday
and Thursday. Another low should develop off the southeast coast
on Thursday and Thursday night before rapidly intensifying as
it lifts to the northeast toward Atlantic Canada on Friday and
Friday night. High pressure is anticipated to build into our
region from the northwest for Saturday. Another strengthening
low is forecast to pass off the southeast coast on Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Morning update...
Very little change to the forecast this morning. An unusually cold
but otherwise quiet day in progress. Winds will start to ease up
this afternoon, taking some edge off the wind chill. Previous
discussion follows...
A downright cold day with a brisk northwest wind from 10 to 15
mph with gusts to 20 mph at times. With highs in the teens and
20s, wind chill readings will be the banner story through the
day, staying in the single digits and teens. We will see
abundant sunshine as the mid-level ridge moves eastward behind
the departing low to our northeast, but it won't do much to warm
us. The good news is that the Arctic airmass isn't remaining
stationary and we moderate into midweek.
Tonight, lows will once again be cold, staying solidly in the
teens. With the surface high moving into the region, we lose the
gradient wind and this will allow for actual temperatures to
probably drop a degree or two colder in places. Wind chill
values will probably stay a degree or two above those this
morning, but still mostly drop into the single digits to below
zero over the Pocono Plateau once again.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
We will continue to be influenced by the long wave mid level
trough over eastern Canada during the period from Wednesday
through Thursday night. A clipper system is forecast to drop
from the Canadian Prairies on Wednesday to the southeastern
states on Thursday night. In response, a surface low is expected
to develop off the southeast coast on Thursday and Thursday
night. The impacts of the low should remain to our south and
southeast.
Meanwhile, a weak surface low is anticipated to move eastward
across the Great Lakes on Wednesday and Thursday. While the
system will likely cause an increase in cloud cover in our
region, the light precipitation associated with it should remain
mostly to our west and north.
Daytime temperatures are expected to rebound back to normal for
Wednesday with the development of a southwest wind on the back
side of the departing high. Readings should be a bit above
normal on Thursday, even with an increase in cloud cover.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
There are several moving parts and a fair amount of uncertainty
regarding the forecast for the period from Friday through
Monday.
Strong low pressure is expected to be well to our east on
Friday and it should continue to race northeastward and into
Atlantic Canada on Saturday. Meanwhile, frigid high pressure is
anticipated to build southeastward from Ontario and into our
region, bringing cold dry conditions for Friday and Saturday.
Another robust short wave traveling around the long wave trough
over the eastern states is expected to reach the Southeast on
Saturday night. The model guidance is in good agreement that a
rapidly intensifying low will develop and pass off the Southeast
coast on Sunday. However, there is quite a bit of spread
regarding the track it will take and whether it will get close
enough to our region to bring some precipitation. For now, we
will mention a chance of snow primarily for the Interstate 95
Corridor southeastward, but again there remains quite a bit of
uncertainty.
Monday's forecast is very dependent upon how the low off the
coast behaves.

today on the ocean waters (noon on the Delaware Bay) as
northwest winds move into the region behind a cold front. Seas
from 3 to 5 feet.
Based on buoy ice accretion reports, the Freezing Spray Advisory has
been extended until 1PM. The greatest opportunity for freezing spray
to accumulate on vessels is closer to the coast where waters are
colder than they are 5 to 10 nm an further offshore. Winds should
diminish enough after 1 pm to end much of the threat for the rest of
the day.
Northwesterly winds drop below advisory levels into the
afternoon from 15 to 20 knots and back to the southwest from 10
to 15 knots late tonight. Seas dropping to 2 to 3 feet.
