Area forecast discussion, Jun 21, 10:22 AM EDT, 5 hours 3 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
1022 AM EDT Tue Jun 21 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
A front will stall near our region through Wednesday. A low
pressure system is expected to develop off the coast of the
northeastern U.S. and stay near our region through at least
Thursday. A ridge is expected to build in from the west over the
weekend. A cold front may approach our region early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Morning Update...

Little change to the going forecast. A good deal of mainly mid and
high level cloud cover will continue today, but it should stay
mostly dry. A passing shower is possible, with some light radar
returns passing through from north to south. But there is a lot of
dry air through the column to overcome so the better chances will be
later this afternoon and evening. A more southwesterly flow will
lead to some increase in both temperatures and humidity versus prior
days, but nothing uncomfortable. Previous discussion follows...

A mid level ridge extended from the lower Mississippi River
Valley to eastern Ontario and western Quebec early this morning.
A mid level low was located off the coasts of New England and
Nova Scotia. The ridge is forecast to retreat and flatten today
and tonight and the low should drift to the south. The upper
flow is expected to bring areas of high clouds down from the
north.

The flow at the surface is anticipated to back from the west to
the south today as a warm front approaches from the west. We
should maintain a light southerly flow for tonight. Increasingly
warm and humid air is forecast to expand into our region from
the west. We will likely see an increase in mid level clouds for
today with some stratocumulus arriving for tonight. There could
be some scattered light rain showers in eastern Pennsylvania
and northern New Jersey this afternoon. Additional showers are
expected to drop down from the north, affecting mainly northern
and central New Jersey for tonight.

Highs today are expected to favor the upper 70s and lower 80s
as dew points increase into the upper 50s and lower 60s.
Tonight's lows should range from the upper 50s to the middle 60s
in our region.

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
The stalled front will still be near/over the region on
Wednesday, but then attention turns to the developing closed low
off the east coast. There has been very poor model agreement
and run to run consistency on the location and evolution of this
low. Interestingly, most of the deterministic models trended
closer to a solution with the low just east of our region
Wednesday through Thursday. There remain some minor differences
in how far east the center of the low will be, which has big
implications for temperatures and rain chances.

In general though, it appears the deterministic guidance is
converging on a solution that will allow the marine layer to
advect in over much of the region. Consequently have trended
highs down from the blend of guidance, but may need to lower
further if there is a trend towards the current ECMWF solution.

As for rain, given a mostly northeasterly fetch, and difluent
flow in the upper levels thanks to a split flow pattern, rain
appears likely Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning. There
is some risk for heavy rain given a stalled front in the region
and precipitable water values approaching the 90th percentile.
However, the band of heaviest rain will be highly dependent on
where the center of the low finally develops. Currently, much of
the guidance depicts the band of heaviest rain just west of our
region, but will have to continue to monitor this potential.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Overview...

The long term forecast remains uncertain as we watch the
evolution of a cutoff mid-level low and weak surface low
offshore, but models are gradually coming into agreement. An
area of low pressure is likely to form south and southeast of
the region Wednesday night into Thursday, and begin interacting
with a mid-level cutoff low further to the east. At this stage,
it looks like the main impact from this complex system will just
be to provide prolonged, light onshore flow to the region
heading through the rest of the week. Rain chances should start
to dwindle as frontal boundaries from midweek weaken and/or move
away from the region. So overall, while not the most common
synoptic pattern, it looks to be a fairly typical summer
stretch, with warm but not hot temperatures, and a couple of
shower and storm chances but currently no notable severe weather
appearing likely.

Details...

Thursday-Thursday night... Thursday's forecast will certainly
have a heavy dependency on the evolution of the convection on
Wednesday as that will affect boundary placements. At the mid-
levels, the general consensus among the guidance holds the
closed mid-level low off the coast. At the surface, a boundary
will be draped over or close to the region, while low pressure
develops and strengthens to our southeast, progresses offshore,
and takes a turn up the coast. In addition, surface high
pressure will begin to build in from the Great Lakes and it may
be enough to give us some more breaks of sun Thursday and allow
temperatures to rise to the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. There
will still be a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms
on Thursday as a result of the boundary placement and height
falls aloft as the mid-level low retrogrades west. A washout is
not anticipated, and mainly dry conditions should return through
the overnight hours.

Friday-Saturday... Current indications are that surface and
mid- level low pressure will be too far offshore for much impact
on the region for the late week period. Mid-level ridging on
the back side of the low should build in through the afternoon
on Friday with surface high pressure in control leading to
mostly dry weather for these days. A subtle shortwave may lead
to a slight increase in cloud coverage during the first half of
Saturday. Weak onshore flow is expected to continue, which
combined with the upper level pattern, will keep temperatures
near to slightly below average, but it will be a little on the
muggy side. Saturday looks the warmer day with highs pushing
into the mid 80s. The warm, semi-humid conditions may lead to an
isolated instability shower risk both Friday and Saturday
afternoon, but with the absence of a significant forcing
mechanism, this chance appears low.

Sunday-Monday... By this time, the surface and mid-level lows
discussed above should be well off to our north and east, and
attention will then turn to a front approaching from the west.
Sunday should be another warm day ahead of the front with
temperatures again in the mid 80s, while Monday may see a bit of
cooling depending on the timing of the aforementioned front. An
upper-level trough will encroach on the region in tandem with
the surface front. Consenus among the most recent guidance
brings the front through the area sometime Monday morning,
though this continues to fluctuate from run to run. Included chc
PoPs beginning late Sunday for the western zones and introduced
some lkly PoPs Monday at this point. Some degree of shower and
tstm activity seems likely when this front passes owing to the
combination of surface forcing, vorticity advection around the
base of the upper-level trough, and coincident height falls.

&&

.AVIATION /15Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Today...VFR. A chance of light showers in the afternoon.
Southwest to south wind 5 to 10 knots. High confidence.

Tonight...Mainly VFR. A chance of showers, mainly affecting
KTTN and KACY. South wind 8 knots or less. Medium to high
confidence.

Outlook...

Wednesday-Wednesday night... Prevailing MVFR conditions are
possible due to low clouds and/or rain showers and
thunderstorms. Southeast wind 5 to 10 kt. Low confidence.

Thursday-Thursday night... Mainly VFR, but localized
restrictions possible due to showers and tstms. Winds mostly
light and variable but continuing to mainly favor the northeast
or east. Low confidence.

Friday-Saturday... Mainly VFR. Winds mostly light and variable.
Moderate confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
A warm front approaching from the west is expected to cause the
wind to transition from southwest at 5 to 10 knots this morning
to south at 10 to 15 knots for this afternoon and tonight.

Wave heights are forecast to be 2 to 3 feet on our ocean
waters, and 2 feet or less on Delaware Bay.

Outlook...

Wednesday-Thursday night... Mainly sub-SCA conditions are
expected. Southeast winds expected throughout this period,
mainly at 10 to 15 kt. However, winds of 15 to 20 kt with gusts
approaching 25 kt are possible for much of the daytime
Wednesday. Seas mainly 3 to 4 ft, but may approach 5 ft for a
time Wednesday night.

Friday-Saturday... No marine headlines are anticipated.

Rip currents...

A southerly wind around 10 MPH is expected for today along the
coasts of Delaware and New Jersey. Breaking waves should be
around 1 foot with a medium period easterly swell. There is a
LOW risk for rip currents.

A south to southeast wind 10 to 15 MPH is anticipated for
Wednesday with breaking waves of 2 to 3 feet. There is expected
to be a medium period east to southeast swell. There is a
MODERATE risk for the development of dangerous rip currents
along the New Jersey coast due to an onshore component to the
wind, especially from Barnegat Inlet southward. The wind
direction may be a bit more parallel to the Delaware Beaches
than at locations in New Jersey. Therefore, we are forecasting a
LOW risk in Delaware for Wednesday.
