Area forecast discussion, Jun 8, 1:09 PM EDT, 2 hours 23 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 109 PM EDT Wed Jun 8 2022 .SYNOPSIS... A cold front will remain near the area today while weak high pressure builds in to the north. Low pressure will intensify while moving near our region tonight into early Thursday morning. High pressure returns for Friday but then another low will affect the region Saturday and possibly into Sunday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/... As of 955 AM, a cold front is nearing the coast where it will tend to stall with a more west to even west-northwest wind in its wake. Surface dew points are also lowering across portions of our western zones. Lingering low clouds are becoming more convective looking (shallow) on visible satellite imagery given boundary layer heating. Much of this should tend to mix out through the afternoon especially west of the surface front due to drier air eventually getting entrained. Made some adjustments to the hourly temperature, dew point, wind and sky grids to account for the latest observations and trends. Otherwise, there is a chance of a few isolated showers or storms near the coast and over southern Delmarva in the vicinity of the front. Humidity levels won't be too high except near the coast where dew points will remain in the middle to upper 60s. Things continue to look interesting tonight. A new area of low pressure will develop along the stalled front back over Ohio and move northeastward toward the area while deepening. The system will be driven by a fairly vigorous shortwave aloft. As the low approaches, the front will start to move back northward as a warm front with showers/storms developing along it by the late evening and especially the overnight period. These look to move across the area mainly during the 6-12z (roughly 2am-8am) time frame. The system will be quite dynamic with 0-6/0-3/0-1km shear values increasing to around 45/35/25 knot respectively. There also should be at least a few hundred j/kg of ML CAPE over Delmarva into southern NJ and SE PA. For this reason the Storm Prediction Center has maintained the MARGINAL risk for severe weather. There is still some uncertainty on the exact track and strength of the low and also how much of the convection will be surface based. The overnight timing is not ideal for severe convection but the strong dynamics with the system could make up for this. The main threat with any severe storms looks to be damaging winds. Low level shear will also be strong with an 850 mb jet around 50 knots. This will also help to advect in PWATs around 2 inches meaning rainfall will be quite heavy. Total rain amounts look to generally be around .75 to 1.5 inches for most areas but locally amounts could be double this so there could be localized flash flooding. One limiting factor though is that it's been fairly dry recently. That said, the threat has still increased enough for the Weather Prediction Center to include portions of the urban corridor around Wilmington, Philadelphia extending back toward Chester County to a SLIGHT risk for excessive rainfall. So this is the area that has the highest threat for flash flooding. By 12z Thursday, the center of low pressure should be over eastern PA with showers and storms still ongoing. These will then come to an end though from west to east through the remaining of the morning as the low tracks north and east into New England. This will lead to gusty west winds with drying conditions and at least some partial clearing heading into the afternoon. Highs should range mainly from the mid 70s to the low 80s (coolest north and warmest south) except cooler in the southern Poconos where more cloudiness will tend to hang on along with the chance of some lingering showers. && .SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/... Fair weather for much of this period with high pressure across the area. Later Friday, clouds will increase over the area as the next system approaches. Temperatures will be seasonable with highs in the upper 70s/low 80s for Friday. Friday night, showers will arrive overnight from W to E. Mostly chance level pops with a few areas of likely pops for the wrn areas. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... An upper trough parking across the East this weekend will result in rather unsettled conditions for the weekend. A front along the coast and low pressure moving along it will bring clouds and showers to most areas for Sat/Sat evening before diminishing overnight. We'll have categorical pops for Sat and then chc pops for the overnight period. For Sunday, the latest models are offering widely different solutions with the GFS keeping clouds and showers over the area while the EC is showing some ridging and probably a dry warm day. For now, we'll keep at least a chance for some showers in the fcst for Sunday, favoring the N/W parts of the forecast area. Next week, plenty of uncertainty as the pattern amplifies across the region. Milder air from the Midwest/Tenn. Valley works its way NE and will arrive for midweek with some above normal readings expected. Probably weak short waves moving thru, so chc pops are in the fcst. && .AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. This afternoon...VFR conditions. Tonight...Ceilings lower to MVFR/IFR due to low clouds and showers/thunderstorms moving through the region...mainly after 04Z. Visibilities will be reduced at times due to the precipitation. South to southeast winds 5-10 knots. Moderate confidence. Thursday...Showers and thunderstorms end by 12Z. Ceilings and Visibilities improve to VFR 12-14Z. Winds becoming west 15 to 20 knots with gusts of 20 to 30 knots possible. Moderate confidence. Outlook... Thu night and Friday... VFR expected much of the time. Fri night and Saturday... Lower CIGS/VSBYS with periods of showers. Sat night...Showers diminishing. Patchy fog overnight possible. Sunday... VFR expected. && .MARINE... As of 955 AM, seas are below 5 feet and therefore the remaining Small Craft Advisory has been cancelled. Winds and seas increase once again tonight into Thursday as a low pressure system passes by north of the waters. This will likely result in another period of Small Craft Advisory conditions by late tonight into Thursday. Winds will initially be southerly then shifting to westerly through Thursday. The system will also bring showers/storms over the waters later tonight into Thursday and this could result in locally higher winds. Outlook... sub-SCA conditions expected much of the time. Scattered showers Thu evening then fair thru Friday. More showers Fri night thru Sat evening. Rip currents... Due to a lingering longer period swell (a 9-11 second wave period), the rip current risk will remain elevated. Currently, we are expecting a MODERATE risk for the formation of dangerous rip currents through today with this likely to continue for at least the NJ beaches for Thursday as well. && .PHI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
