Area forecast discussion, Jun 6, 1:56 PM EDT, 1 hour 5 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
156 PM EDT Mon Jun 6 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will continue to gradually move off shore through
the day today. A cold front is expected to approach the region
Tuesday night into Wednesday. Low pressure slides along the
front Late Wednesday into Thursday morning. After high pressure
briefly tries to build in on Friday, a warm front and
associated low pressure system approaches starting Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Fair conditions continue today with mostly high level clouds,
and a few cumulus clouds developing during the day as high
pressure offshore of the east coast continues to control the
weather. No significant changes to the forecast so far, only
minor hourly temperature, dewpoint, and wind adjustments have
been made.

High pressure will continue to move east of the area today and
High temperatures will be near seasonal norms with mostly upper
70s to low 80s today. Lows tonight will be a couple degrees
below normal with mostly mid/upper 50s and low 60s for the metro
Philly region.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Overview: Two significant chances for widespread precipitation
through this period. The first comes late Tuesday into Tuesday
night as the cold front approaches from the west (though should
still stay west of our region through this period). The second
comes Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday night as
cyclogenesis occurs along the front (now over our region), and
the resultant low slides northeast over our region along the
front.

Hazards: The main hazard at this point looks to be heavy rain,
primarily with the second round Wednesday night. Through this
round, precipitable water values could be near or above the 90th
percentile for early June. Additionally, the warm cloud layer
could be relatively deep - 10 to 13 K ft. However, as noted by
the previous shift, the system by this point is fast moving, and
model hodographs depict that even mean storm motions by this
point should be 20 mph or faster. That being said, there is a
marginal threat that rain amounts could exceed flash flood
guidance, but not confident in the duration or location at this
point to warrant a flood watch.

At this point the risk for severe thunderstorms with either
round is very low. With the first round late Tuesday/Tuesday
night, instability is extremely limited, to the point that it
appears the primary mode will be showers, with only some
embedded thunderstorms. While instability does increase ahead of
the second round, the highest instability, bulk shear, and
synoptic scale lift is not coincident (either in space or time)
with one another, limiting the severe threat. Additionally, flow
through the lowest km stays rather weak through the entire
event, and the melting layer stays relatively high.

Temperatures/dew points: Despite southerly flow ahead of the
front for all of Tuesday, and most if not all of Tuesday night,
any warm air advection will be tempered by persistent cloud
cover through this period, meaning high temperatures both days
will range from the mid 70s to low 80s. One thing the southerly
flow will be responsible for is increasing moisture (as noted
above with precipitable water values near the 90th percentile by
the second round). By Wednesday, we should have dew points well
into the 60s for most locations, with some of Delmarva seeing
dewpoints in the lower 70s.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The previously mentioned low tracking along the front should be
lifting away from the region rather quickly on Thursday.
Consequently, expect any lingering showers to move out of the
region by mid day Thursday.

High pressure briefly tries to build into the region Thursday
night and Friday, bringing a return to dry, tranquil and
pleasant conditions that we've had over the past few days.

Tranquil weather will be short lived however, as a low
developing over the lower Mississippi Valley on Friday is
expected to lift northeast towards the Mid Atlantic on Saturday.
Most of the latest deterministic guidance continues to keep the
track of this low generally south of our region, keeping us on
the cool side, which could set the stage for a cold air damming
set up on Saturday. Consequently, I went a few degrees lower
than a blend of guidance with high temperatures on Saturday. As
mentioned by the previous shift, so far this appears to be more
of a stratiform rain set up, so not confident on thunderstorm
potential.

Most deterministic guidance shows the surface low well away from
our region by late Saturday night. However, the trailing mid and
upper level ridge may remain to our west on Sunday. So while
some guidance has our region completely dry on Sunday, I have
stayed close to a blend of guidance keeping slight chance or
chance of rain showers through the day on Sunday.

&&

.AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

.Rest of Today...VFR conditions. Mostly south to southwest winds
5-10 knots, occasional gusts around 15 knots for some areas.
ILG may be more southeast wind direction.

.Tonight...VFR conditions continue. Winds become south to
southeast this evening and overnight 5-10 knots or less. Any
gusts drop off by sunset, and winds become light and variable
for many areas overnight.

Tuesday...Conditions expected to remain mostly VFR. There is a
chance for scattered showers during the day, especially ABE and
RDG, which could briefly lower conditions. Mostly southerly
winds, 5-10 knots early, increasing to 10-15 knots with gusts
20-25 knots by late morning into the afternoon.

Tuesday night...Conditions lowering to MVFR then IFR though the
evening and overnight as more steady rainfall affects the area.
Winds become less gusty overnight, but remain breezy around 10
knots and shift to the south-southeast, before shifting to the
west late in the night, toward daybreak Wednesday.

Outlook...
Wednesday through Wednesday night...Periods of MVFR or even IFR
with showers and thunderstorms, especially again Wednesday
evening and overnight. Southerly or southwesterly winds 5 to 10
kt becoming westerly around 5 kt late Wednesday night. Moderate
confidence on the overall pattern, but low confidence on the
details.

Friday...VFR. Westerly winds 5 to 10 kt. Moderate confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
High pressure across the waters will move east through tonight.
Fair weather is expected today and tonight. Light E/SE winds
will increase to 10 to 15 knots later this afternoon and into
tonight. A couple gusts around 20 kts possible.

Outlook...

Tuesday and Wednesday...SCA conditions, both for elevated seas
and wind gusting at or above 25 kt, is possible, primarily on
the Atlantic coastal waters.

Thursday and Friday...Winds and seas should stay below SCA
criteria.

Rip Currents...

Despite onshore wind, wind speeds should be light and surf
heights should be relatively low. Therefore the risk for the
formation of dangerous rip currents is LOW today.

On Tuesday, increasing southeasterly swell and southerly or
southeasterly winds will increase the rip current risk to at
least MODERATE.

An elevated rip current risk may continue through Wednesday.
