.SYNOPSIS...
Several disturbances will pass beneath an upper-level low over the
Northeast through Sunday, leading to unsettled weather today. High
pressure will build to our southwest late Sunday into Monday. An
area of low pressure will then move across Ontario Monday night into
Tuesday, dragging a cold front into our region. A stronger area of
low pressure will develop over the Midwest Wednesday, slowly drawing
the front back north as a warm front. By Friday, this low draws a
cold front through the region.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
An impressive closed low encompassing eastern Canada and the eastern
U.S. all the way to northern Florida will dominate our weather
through tonight.

A robust shortwave rolling up the eastern side of the extensive
trough is crossing our area early this morning. This is sustaining
showers across much of the area with little to no elevated
instability (via mesoanalysis data). Lightning has therefore been
nil so far. There should be a break in the shower activity by
mid/late this morning, before instability showers redevelop from
about midday onward. These showers should be isolated to scattered
in coverage. The continued cooling aloft will result in plenty of
cloud cover through the day, and this will also translate to cooler
temperatures compared to yesterday. The model forecast soundings
show about 100-300 J/Kg of Most-Unstable CAPE (MUCAPE) and this
meager instability is all within a sub-freezing layer. As a result,
any stronger shower core could produce small hail/graupel with even
a rumble of thunder this afternoon. Opted to hold off on introducing
a thunder mention to the forecast as coverage may be rather
isolated/brief. Given the steep low to mid level lapse rates
(inverted-V low-level profile), locally gusty winds may accompany
some of the showers this afternoon however severe weather is not
expected given minimal instability.

As the low-level lapse rates steepen today, deeper mixing is
forecast to occur. This will result in an increasing westerly breeze
especially from about midday onward, and this will make it feel
cooler. Temperatures should top out into the 50s for much of the
area, however some wet snow could mix in at times with the rain
showers across the higher elevations of the southern Poconos.

As we go through tonight, the closed low is forecast to open up some
as it starts to lift east and northeastward. The axis of this trough
should cross our region during the night bringing in colder air.
While some surface wind may hold on, the boundary layer should tend
to decouple enough to result in the wind going light and variable at
many places as the night wears on. Any showers should be ending
during the evening as the loss of heating occurs. At least some
cloud cover should persist more much of the area tonight given the
trough moving through and colder air arriving. Temperatures
overnight are forecast to drop into the mid/upper 30s for many areas
(even just below freezing in parts of the southern Poconos).

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
The upper level low finally lifts out of our region into Sunday as a
weak and elongated surface high nudges eastward out of the Great
Lakes. As one final shortwave perturbation wraps around the backside
of the upper low, a few showers could work their way as far south as
the I-78 corridor into the afternoon, but moisture remains limited
and these don't look all that impressive. There won't be any
instability, so we aren't expecting any graupel with these showers.
Highs will be a few degrees on either side of 50.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Global guidance has begun to converge on their solutions for the
Monday and Tuesday timeframe, but things diverge quite a bit
Wednesday onward still. The main changes with the latest runs of
these models have been to continue the troughing pattern over the
West, but the ridge over the East looks much more lackluster and
diffuse.

A very transient surface ridge will weaken as it shifts over our
region Monday. Highs will range from the upper 50s to lower 60s. The
EC and Canadian came into agreement with the GFS in taking a surface
low over Ontario and Quebec. This system drags a cold front through
our region Tuesday morning, with the front stalling to our south
into the afternoon. I am worried the temperature forecast for
Tuesday and Wednesday may drastically change depending on how far
south the front makes it. For now, highs will sit in the low 70s.
Wednesday is probably the most tricky day with the front attempting
to work back north as a warm front, but with decent onshore flow
from the southeast, temps may hang back in the 50s and 60s north of
this front, likely being across the northern half of the forecast
area. There is quite poor agreement on the timing of this evolution
at this time, so continued with a blended NBM approach from here
out.

The low occludes over the upper Midwest and Great Lakes Wednesday
and Thursday, but the GFS remains more progressive in taking it out
of the Great Lakes, whereas the Canadian and EC keep it held back
over Minnesota with the 500 mb trough remaining negatively tilted
into the Northeast, but the GFS is positively tilted. There is so
much disagreement by the Thursday and Friday timeframe, it isn't
worth mentioning aside from the cold front likely coming through
sometime Thursday night or Friday. Precipitation coverage and
intensity is quite variable and dependent on where the surface low
is and the tilt of the mid-level trough.

Highs look to continue in the low to mid 70s Thursday and Friday,
then cooling Saturday behind the front into the 60s.

.AVIATION /08Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Today...Local morning MVFR ceilings possible, otherwise VFR
ceilings. Showers early this morning, then isolated to scattered
showers this afternoon. Any shower can result in brief MVFR
visibilities. Westerly winds increasing to 8-12 knots with gusts 15-
20 knots. Low confidence on MVFR ceilings this morning.

Tonight...Any showers should end early this evening, otherwise VFR
ceilings. West-northwest winds diminishing to less than 10 knots,
then becoming locally light and variable. Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Sunday...VFR. West-northwest winds from 10 to 15 knots with gusts to
25 knots. High confidence.

Monday...VFR. Northwesterly winds turning southwesterly from 5 to 10
knots. High confidence.

Tuesday...VFR with west-northwesterly winds from 10 to 15 knots.
Moderate confidence.

Wednesday...VFR with CIGs lowering to at least MVFR later in the
day. Southeasterly winds from 10 to 15 knots. Moderate confidence.

Thursday...Sub-VFR conditions possible with scattered showers.
Southeasterly winds turning southwesterly from 10 to 15 knots. Low
confidence.

.MARINE...
A colder airmass especially aloft builds in today and especially
tonight. This will result in some strengthening of the winds due to
better mixing, with the stronger winds occurring later tonight. Seas
on the ocean early this morning are below 5 feet and it looks rather
marginal today for a Small Craft Advisory. As a result, we reworked
the Small Craft Advisory and it now starts around Midnight tonight
for all zones. This is primarily for wind gusts to around 25
knots.

Outlook...

Sunday...Small Craft Advisory remains in effect through 6 pm for
west-northwest winds gusting from 25 to 30 knots at times. Seas from
2 to 4 feet.

Monday through Thursday...Sub-advisory level conditions
expected.

.HYDROLOGY...
We still have several river points in flood stage across the
Raritan, Passaic, and Delaware River basins. This is due to the
heavy rainfall Thursday and Thursday evening. Faster responding
creeks and streams have crested and are receding with flooding
still ongoing or expected at slower responding points. We added
a little bit of nuisance rainfall from showers last night and
will do so through the day today, but totals will remain light
from a quarter of an inch or less.

For the Middle Delaware River basin, minor flooding from Tock's
Island south to Riegelsville will continue and crest later this
afternoon and evening. South of here down to Trenton, rises
into action stage are expected but most likely levels here
should crest below flood stage on Saturday.

Finally for the Passaic Basin, it will be quite some time
before Pine Brook crests with rising levels expected through
Saturday into early Sunday. The current forecast is for a crest
here into moderate stage Sunday morning with the stage expected
to exceed 20 feet.
