Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A low pressure system and its attached fronts will move offshore
this afternoon. It will be followed by a slow moving front and
a wave of low pressure for tonight and Thursday. Unsettled
conditions will be over the area Friday and Saturday as a large
upper low remains over the region. High pressure will arrive for
late this weekend and into next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
1000 AM Update...No major changes to the forecast at this time
as rain has been easing in intensity and starting to wind down
from west to east as forecast. Previous discussion follows
below.

Both the surface and mid-level waves will depart to the east
today. This will result in a drying trend, with steady rain
ending during the morning hours to perhaps midday near the
coast. However, it will not be the nicest of days. Winds remain
northeasterly behind the low, with even some indication of a
weak inverted trough feature stretching back into the region.
This will keep moisture trapped in the low levels even as the
column aloft dries out. Broken to overcast sky conditions with
low ceilings will likely remain in place all day, especially in
eastern portions of the area. Spotty drizzle may linger behind
the steady rain also, though have not explicitly mentioned
drizzle in the grids at this point. Some breaks of sun are
possible this afternoon, especially heading further south and
west.

We're starting the day off warmer than average, but because of the
lingering rain and cloud cover, temperature rises will be slow
today, and most areas will only climb into the mid to upper 50s, a
little warmer on Delmarva and cooler at the immediate coast. It will
be a little breezy also with a decent pressure gradient in place
behind the departing low. Gusts of around 20 mph are likely, with
some 25 to 30 mph gusts at the coast, further contributing to a
somewhat raw feel today.

Overnight, mainly dry weather for most of the night and continued
cloudy skies as our next weather system begins to approach. Some
showers associated with that system will likely start to move into
the western zones late in the night, but should be light. Because of
the cloud cover, low temperatures will be above average, in the mid
to upper 40s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
The window of dry weather from late Wednesday will be short lived as
another weather system affects the area by Thursday. A slow moving
occluded frontal boundary associated with sprawling low pressure
over the Great Lakes will approach the region by Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, another convectively enhanced mid-level wave over the
Southeast will pass to our south with a strong upper jet streak also
in place over the Southeast. Model guidance continues to indicate
this will spur cyclogenesis just to our south along the front, with
a wave of low pressure developing near Delmarva and passing
overhead. This will lead to unsettled weather on Thursday.

An initial batch of shower activity associated with the front is
likely to affect the region during the morning. Heading into the
afternoon, additional rain is likely as the new surface low takes
shape and brings additional forcing for ascent. PoPs are at likely
to categorical values throughout the day, though there will probably
be some dry interludes especially to the east and south. As the new
low develops, we also see quite a bit of instability overspread the
region, with plenty of shear and forcing also. However, the
instability looks to be elevated, with a cool and stable layer near
the surface. So thunder is possible, and have it mentioned in the
forecast, but there should not be a severe weather concern. The one
possible exception would be on Delmarva if temperatures warm more
than forecast and lead to some surface based instability. SPC SWODY2
does have a marginal risk area just clipping southern Delaware and
the adjacent Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Temperatures will be tricky on Thursday owing to uncertainty in the
track and structure of the developing low. Overall, it should be a
cooler than average day due to the shower activity and onshore
winds. Low to mid 50s are forecast for much of the area. However,
further south, there may be a window for more significant warming in
the afternoon if the developing warm sector of the new low
overspreads Delmarva and southern NJ. This could potentially
set up a large north to south temperature gradient, and do have
values well into the 60s forecast on parts of Delmarva. As
mentioned above, will have to watch the temperature forecast
here for an outside risk of some severe weather potential.
Decent confidence in the forecast values for the northern half
of the area, but the range of outcomes widens quite a bit the
further south you go.

Shower and thunderstorm activity should depart to the east during
the later evening and early overnight hours, with drier weather to
follow. Another fairly mild night is forecast with lows favoring the
mid 40s. Winds should stay up enough behind the departing low to
prevent fog formation, but if they end up lighter then we would have
to watch for that.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
In the wake of the occluded front, the large upper level closed low
will be lingering over the region through Saturday. Although there
will be plenty of opportunities for synoptic scale lift with this
trough, dry air advection in the wake of the Thursday front should
limit the potential for widespread, prolonged rain. None the less,
think there will be potential for cloudy/mostly cloudy conditions
through this period, so increased the cloud cover and slightly
decreased day time highs from a model blend both Friday and
Saturday.

The upper level trough should translate off shore by Monday morning.
Right on its heels, a surface high is expected to build from the
south while in the mid and upper levels a large ridge begins to
build over the eastern seaboard. At least one deterministic model
(GFS) depicts a surface low progressing NE near the region under the
upper level ridge axis. Given the synoptic scale subsidence that
should be occuring, this seems an unlikely evolution. Thus, have
kept the forecast dry from Sunday onward.

Once the center of the surface high and low level ridge axis shifts
east of our region, we will be left with low level southwesterly
flow ushering warm air advection. There seems to be good model
agreement that this will occur as early as Tuesday. Even going with
just a blend of guidance results in highs mostly in the 70s across
the region on Tuesday.

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

.Today... Low CIGS/VSBYS much of the morning with LIFR/IFR.
Gusty NE winds. Improvement to MVFR possible this afternoon, but
not certain. We have more confid for MVFR for the KABE-KRDG
areas. For the busy Delaware Valley sites and SE, low-end MVFR
is in there for the afternoon, but again if it remained high-end
IFR, it wouldn't be surprising. The improvement in conditions
seems likely with drier air arriving aloft and decent winds
mixing up the lower levels this afternoon. Medium confid
overall.

.Tonight... Another system arriving tonight will bring more
IFR/LIFR CIGS early tonight and then rains and lower VSBYS
overnight. Rains will arrive west (KRDG-KABE) after midnight and
then push E/SE towards dawn. A trend towards later starting
times is evident. SE winds 5 to 10 knots overnight. Medium
confid overall.

Outlook...

Thursday thru Thursday night... Additional rounds of restrictions,
likely including IFR, are probable as one or more additional
rounds of rain affects the region. Winds slowly shifting from
northeast to southeast early Thursday at 5 to 10 kt, then light
and variable Thursday night. Moderate confidence.

Friday and Saturday...Mostly VFR conditions are expected, though
there is a chance that MVFR ceilings could develop for some of this
period. West to southwest winds 5 to 15 kt. Moderate confidence.

Sunday...Mostly VFR conditions are expected. Northwest winds 10
to 20 kt. Moderate confidence.

Through today... A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for all of the
local waters except the northern Delaware Bay. Expanded the
advisory for the southern Delaware Bay until 4 PM due to winds
continuing to gust to 25 kt. On the Atlantic coastal waters, the
advisory will continue through the day as seas build to 4 to 7
ft. Winds shifting from east to northeast at around 20 kt with
gusts up to 30 kt on the Atlantic coastal waters.

Tonight... SCA conditions continuing on the Atlantic coastal waters
due to seas 5 to 7 ft. Northeast wind 10 to 15 kt with gusts to 20
kt. Sub-SCA conditions on Delaware Bay.

Outlook...

Thursday-Friday...SCA conditions will continue on the coastal waters
through at least through Thursday night and potentially part of
Friday. SCA conditions will be primarily the result of elevated seas
of 5 to 7 feet, which will start to diminish on Friday. Winds and
seas should stay below SCA criteria on the Delaware Bay.

Saturday through Monday...Winds and seas are likely to stay below
SCA criteria, though northwesterly wind gusts above 20 kt will be
possible on Sunday.
