What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Apr 4, 7:38 PM EDT, 7 hours 49 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Apr 4, 7:38 PM EDT, 7 hours 49 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
738 PM EDT Mon Apr 4 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front will approach from the south tomorrow. An area of
low pressure will then pass just south of the area Tuesday
night into Wednesday before moving out to sea. A slow moving
cold front will cross the region Thursday into Thursday night.
Upper level low pressure will persist across the region into the
weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A mid-level shortwave trough is passing just north of the area
from the west this afternoon. Mid-level flow then remains
largely zonal with the next feature of interest being the much
more robust mid-level shortwave ejecting northeastward from the
Southeast, making its approach on the Mid-Atlantic during the
daytime Tuesday. At the surface, weak high pressure which has
dominated the sensible weather today will push offshore tonight
and farther out to sea into Tuesday. The next surface low
associated with the aforementioned wave will be progressing into
the southern Appalachian region tomorrow before making its
approach to our region into Tuesday night.

The shortwave approaching from the southern Great Lakes resulted
in increasing cloud cover this afternoon across the region.
This trend will continue into this evening, but clouds may
scatter out a bit briefly early in the overnight period behind
the wave. The westerly winds will become light and variable
into the evening and temperatures will fall mostly into the
upper 30s to low 40s (milder south, cooler north) across much of
the area tonight.

Attention into tomorrow morning then turns to the approaching more
robust system approaching the area from the southwest. Guidance is
fairly consistent in depicting the development of scattered showers
after daybreak across a banded area, generally spreading from south
to north as the day progresses. This activity will be associated
with the initial surge of warm advection across the southern
portions of the area as a warm front pushes into the Chesapeake Bay
region. The surface boundary should reach to right around our
southern-most counties of Sussex (DE), Caroline, and Talbot into the
afternoon, and any showers will be located north of this boundary as
it lifts north into the region. The potential shower activity will
also coincide with a period of mid-level difluence with the jet
maxima located offshore. The best forcing will gradually lift
northward (north of the warm front) from southern Delaware and east
central Maryland around daybreak and getting into the I-95 urban
corridor into the mid to late afternoon hours.

PoPs have increased slightly, but I did not include any likely
PoPs at this time given the uncertainty in the coverage of the
showers. PoPs may need to be raised in future updates though. I
hedged the forecast for precipitation toward the 12Z HRRR, which
seems to have a good handle on the overall idea of the
progression of the system Tuesday. QPF amounts should remain
fairly light, generally a tenth to around a quarter of an inch
of rain at most during the daytime. The widespread heavier
rainfall potential will not arrive until Tuesday night.

Temperatures will climb into the mid 50s north of the warm front
during the afternoon and into the mid 60s for the few areas that
manage to experience the warm frontal passage. Winds will be
southeasterly around 5-10 mph.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
There are two main systems of note in the Tuesday night through
Thursday period. The first is the mid level short wave trough
crossing the Mid Atlantic Tuesday night. Second is a cold/occluded
front sweeping through the region Thursday.

Starting with Tuesday night, the surface warm front should stay
south of our region as the mid level short wave trough crosses the
region Tuesday night. As such, we should have a robust low/mid level
inversion over our region through this period, significantly limiting
instability. The primary concern through this period is heavy rain.
This pattern has similarities to the Maddox frontal heavy rain
pattern, and precipitable water values could be near the 90th
percentile for this time of year. That being said, the mid level
short wave trough will be crossing quickly, so this doesn't look to
be as long lived an event as is typical with Maddox frontal events.
Additionally, it will be highly dependent on where the warm front
stalls. If it is far enough south, the heavier rain could be shifted
further south as well. Given that most of the region has been drier
than normal over the past month, and that at this point it looks
like the heaviest rain will be over areas with sandy soils, I don't
see enough of a flooding threat at this point to issue a flood watch.

We should have at least a brief lull on Wednesday, in the wake of
the mid level trough before the next round of rain, this time more
in the form of showers arrives ahead of the front (a cold front
becoming an occluded front) on Thursday. The front will likely
become occluded before the warm front gets very far north in our
region, so surface instability once again appears to be limited,
though some model soundings depict elevated instability.
Consequently this looks to be more showery, with some thunderstorms
possible.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
A large mid/upper level trough will linger over our region through
much of the weekend, before finally shifting off shore on Sunday.
However, dry air advection is expected in the wake of the front on
Thursday. Thus, Friday and Saturday should be quite cloudy, but
chance for measurable precipitation is at most 30 to 40 percent
through this period.

We should see clearing conditions Sunday and Monday as the trough
moves off shore and a surface high builds in from the south.

&&

.AVIATION /00Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight...VFR with SCT to BKN ceilings. Winds light and variable.
High confidence.

Tuesday...Initially VFR ceilings will likely lower to near MVFR or
IFR, with the lowest ceilings most likely at MIV/ACY. This could end
up being a more SCT deck of clouds rather than a BKN or OVC, and
thus not a prevailing ceiling. Scattered rain showers will also
spread north, perhaps as far north of TTN near or after 18Z. Winds
east to southeasterly around 5-10 kts. Low confidence on the
prevailing conditions.

Outlook...

Tuesday night into Wednesday...Prolonged MVFR or even IFR
conditions, primarily due to low ceilings, though visibility
restrictions in rain will be possible as well. Conditions should
improve by mid day Wedensday, possibly up to VFR, though even after
the rain departs, low clouds may linger. Easterly winds 5 to 15 kt,
becoming northeasterly by mid day Wednesday. Moderate confidence on
the overall pattern, but low confidence on details.

Wednesday night-Thursday night... Additional rounds of restrictions,
likely including IFR, are probable as one or more additional rounds
of rain affects the region. Winds slowly shifting from northeast to
southeast Wednesday night into Thursday at 5 to 10 kt, then light
and variable Thursday night. Moderate confidence.

Friday and Saturday...Mostly VFR conditions are expected, though
there is a chance that MVFR ceilings could develop for some of this
period. Westerly and southwesterly winds 5 to 15 kt. Moderate
confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
Sub-advisory conditions expected through Tuesday. Southerly winds
becoming more southeasterly during the day Tuesday around 10-15 kts.
Seas 1-2 feet.

Outlook...

Tuesday night through Thursday...SCA conditions are likely for at
least some of this period on the Atlantic coastal waters as seas
should build to 5 to 7 feet. Winds and waves should stay below SCA
criteria on the Delaware Bay. Periods of rain.

Friday and Saturday...Winds and seas are likely to stay below SCA
criteria.
