Area forecast discussion, Mar 30, 1:36 AM EDT, 1 hour 57 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 136 AM EDT Wed Mar 30 2022 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will move across the northeast and Mid Atlantic states this morning, then translate offshore on Wednesday. A weather disturbance will move across the area early Wednesday, then a warm front will lift into the area Wednesday night into Thursday morning. A cold front will then move across the area Thursday night. A steady northwest flow will develop for Friday into Friday night as a couple of weak surface troughs move across the area. High pressure moves offshore to our south Saturday before a disturbance moves across the area Saturday night into Sunday. High pressure builds into the region Monday of next week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/... Temperatures have trended slow to cool, probably due to the winds this afternoon. With clearer skies, I expect them to come down pretty quickly over the next few hours. This may result in some colder lows tonight in a few locations. One more cold night in store then we see a nice warm up into Thursday ahead of a cold front. Surface high pressure will drift overhead tonight and then offshore Wednesday morning. As a result, winds will diminish quickly into the evening and temperatures should fall rapidly under mostly clear skies. An increase in clouds is expected after midnight as a warm front approaches the region from the southwest. That said, with the clouds building after midnight, not the highest of confidence with temperatures tonight. How fast the winds subside and lower levels decouple as well as fast the clouds move in will both play a role. Decided to lower temps from the previous forecast a bit, especially across the southern zones/Delmarva. Guidance continues to indicate light QPF spreading into the area from the southwest right around daybreak Wednesday. It still looks like much of this precipitation will struggle to reach the ground, especially initially. As a result, I have not included any precipitation during the overnight hours. A mostly cloudy day can be expected on Wednesday as winds will turn SE 5 to 15 mph. It will less windy compared to the last two days. As the warm front approaches the region, there's a chance of some very light precip developing. Best chance for precip will be over eastern PA and NW NJ, but even here POPs are only chance/slight chance. Only concern though is that any precip could be a light wintry mix (spotty sleet or even some spotty freezing rain). By afternoon, any precip should be diminishing as temperatures climb into the 40s and 50s. && .SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/... A warm front will lift into the region Wednesday night, while a short wave/vorticity impulses approaches the area overnight into early Thursday morning. This could lead to a period of light rain/drizzle/fog across portions of eastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey. The warm front will lift north of the area Thursday morning, but a couple of short wave/vorticity impulses will move across the area during the day and interact with some enhanced moisture across the area, and lead to some shower activity. More significantly, the winds on Thursday are expected to be quite gusty, with northwest winds gusting at least 25 to 35 mph. The focus then turns to Thursday evening into Thursday night as a cold front moves across the area and brings the next significant precipitation chances and potential for severe weather. Guidance is all in pretty good agreement with the cold front moving across the area later Thursday evening into Thursday night. This is a good thing as it will limit the amount of instability across the area, although there will still likely be couple hundred J/kg of Most Unstable CAPE. There is enough shear to interact with even the minimal CAPE to lead to a marginal or slight risk for severe weather Thursday evening and overnight. The main concern will be the threat for strong to damaging winds with any storms. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... Behind the cold front, a steady northwest flow will develop for Friday into Friday night while a couple of weak surface troughs move across the area. Meanwhile, a couple of short wave/vorticity impulses will move across the area as well. Low-mid level lapse rates increase and some enhanced moisture moves across the area, so there will be a slight chance of showers during the day, especially for portions of eastern Pennsylvania and northern/central New Jersey. Otherwise, periods of clouds and gusty northwest winds 25-35 mph are expected. On Saturday, high pressure shifts to our south while a weak surface trough moves across the area. Dry conditions are expected during the day with winds diminishing through the day. By Saturday night, a weak disturbance will move across the Ohio River Valley and central Appalachians and toward the Mid Atlantic region, before moving offshore Sunday. There is not a significant amount of lift/moisture combination associated with this system, but there may be enough to create a chance of showers overnight Saturday into Sunday morning. If showers do occur, it would be cold enough for some snow to at least mix in, if not change over for portions of northeast Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey. The remainder of Sunday through Monday night will remain dry as high pressure builds into the region later Sunday into Monday, before shifting offshore by later Monday into Monday night. && .AVIATION /05Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Early this morning... Clouds will continue to thicken and advect northeast across the terminals. Looking at observations downstream confirms that VFR conditions are forecast through the morning. Winds light and variable. High confidence. Today... Cigs will continue to lower today, but will remain VFR as a warm front approaches from the southwest. The warm front will sweep northeast this morning with light precipitation possible along and ahead. The parent cyclone is much further west of the region, and usually when the area is on the fringe impacts are less than what guidance is forecasting. This means the precipitation will likely be light (if any reaches the ground) and shouldn't cause much of a visibility restriction. Any precipitation that does fall will likely be in the form of PL or light snow. Behind the warm front, winds will turn from the south around 5 - 8 kts. High confidence in the overall pattern, but lower in where the light precip exactly falls. Tonight...Conditions lowering to MVFR or IFR overnight with low clouds and fog/drizzle/light rain for some areas. Southeast winds 5-10 knots early, becoming south to southwest 10-15 knots overnight. Have also introduced low level wind shear into the TAFs at this time thanks to the low level jet strengthening. Moderate confidence. Outlook... Thursday...MVFR conditions likely though much of the day. Showers likely with a chance of thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon. Southwest winds 10-20 knots, with gusts 25-35 knots. Moderate confidence. Thursday night...Showers and thunderstorms remain likely into the evening hours with MVFR or IFR conditions, possibly improving to VFR overnight. Northwest winds 10-15 knots with gusts 20-25 knots early, shifting to west behind a cold front. Moderate confidence. Friday-Friday night...Generally VFR, although a brief period of MVFR ceilings possible in the morning. West winds 10-15 knots, with gusts 20-30 knots. High confidence. Saturday...VFR conditions expected. West to northwest winds 5-10 knots with gusts 15-20 knots. High confidence. Saturday night-Sunday...Generally VFR with a chance of showers. Light and variable winds Saturday night, become northwest 5-10 knots on Sunday. && .MARINE... Through tonight...Winds will subside during the overnight to around 10-15 kts through the night. A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect for the northern two Atlantic zones through midnight where a few wind gusts to 25 knots may linger. Seas will gradually diminish to 1-3 feet. Wednesday...NW winds around 10-15 kts, becoming SW. Seas 1-2 feet Outlook... Wednesday night...Small Craft Advisory conditions likely. Thursday-Thursday night...Small Craft Advisory conditions likely, possible gale force winds. Friday-Friday night...Small Craft Advisory conditions likely. Saturday-Sunday...Conditions likely lower below advisory levels and remain so through Sunday. && .PHI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... PA...None. NJ...None. DE...None. MD...None.
