Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
338 AM EDT Sun Mar 20 2022
.SYNOPSIS...
In the wake of the cold front last evening, high pressure will
slowly build eastward south of our region through Monday, before
shifting off shore on Tuesday. A weak cold front will move southward
through the area Monday or Monday night. Another low pressure and
frontal system will move to our northwest Wednesday into Thursday.
High pressure at the surface should build in from the north at the
end of the week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Surface low pressure is forecast to move from southern Quebec and
northern New England early this morning to the Gulf of Saint
Lawrence tonight. Meanwhile, high pressure is expected to slide from
the lower Mississippi River Valley to the southern Appalachians.
Variable cloud cover early this morning is anticipated to transition
to a mostly cloudy sky for much of the day. A mid level short wave
trough approaching from the west is expected to bring the increase
in cloud cover as it lifts a deck of stratocumulus that was trapped
along and to the west of the Appalachians early this morning. The
short wave may also bring isolated light rain showers to Berks
County, the Poconos, the Lehigh Valley and northwestern New Jersey
late in the day.
A west wind is forecast to increase to around 15 MPH with gusts of
25 to 30 MPH. Afternoon high temperatures are expected to range from
the middle and upper 40s on the Pocono Plateau to near 60 degrees on
the coastal plain in our region.
Once the short wave passes to our east late this evening, the sky is
expected to clear overnight. We should have a northwest wind around
10 MPH with gusts of 15 to 20 MPH. Lows tonight will likely favor
the 30s and lower 40s.
&&
.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
The two main features of note in the short term are the broad
surface high centered over the southeastern U.S. and a weak cold
front crossing through our region late Monday or Monday night.
Thanks mostly to the building surface high to our south and being
under the right exit region of an upper level jet, expect synoptic
scale subsidence leading to mostly dry and tranquil weather through
this period. The one exception is there may be enough mesoscale lift
along the front Monday night for a few showers in the southern
Poconos, but given relatively dry air over the region, do not expect
much in the way of measurable rain.
Temperatures will be about 10 degrees above normal on Monday, with
highs in the 50s and 60s. The cold front has little in the way of a
temperature gradient by the time it reaches our region, so
temperatures on Tuesday, behind the front will only be a few degrees
lower than Monday.
&&
.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Overview: A complex low pressure system will bring chances for
precipitation, mostly centered around Wednesday into Thursday
morning, though a trailing mid level short wave trough could result
in additional precipitation chances Friday. A clipper system will be
coming in closely behind Saturday into Sunday which could bring
additional precipitation chances if it digs far enough southeast.
Details:
Wednesday into Wednesday night...Depending on how quickly the warm
front will lift into the region, the first of the rain could arrive
early Wednesday morning. Through the day on Wednesday, expect the
warm front to lift at least as far north as Delmarva and far
southeastern NJ. However, cold easterly flow (with the fetch off the
still relatively cold ocean), could limit the progress north of the
warm front. An additonal challenge of the evolution of this warm
front is that most deterministic models depict this low occluding
either Wednesday or Wednesday night. If this happens early enough,
much of the region may not get into the true warm sector of this
low. Consequently, I've kept any mention of thunder confined to
areas most likely to be in the warm sector by Wednesday evening. By
late Wednesday night, a mid level dry slot could be advecting north
over Delmarva. Given considerable uncertainty, have stayed close to
a blend of guidance for now.
Thursday into Friday...What precip may remain of the mid week system
should end on Thursday as the cold front (could be an occluded front
by that point) sweeps through the region. However, the mid level
trough axis associated with this low may trail behind long enough
for a second chance for precipitation on Friday. Expect dry air
advection behind the cold/occluded front into Friday, so moisture
will likely be limited and any precipitation should be light.
Saturday...The next system we will be watching is a fast moving
clipper system digging out of North Central Canada late in the week
into the weekend. It remains to be seen if this low will dig far
enough south to affect our region, but if it does, it would mean
another chance for precipitation and much colder air arriving in
time for the start of the next week.

.AVIATION /08Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Today...VFR with an increase in cloud cover. West northwest wind 10
to 15 knots with gusts around 25 knots. High confidence.
Tonight...VFR with decreasing cloud cover. Northwest wind around 10
knots with gusts of 15 to 20 knots. High confidence.
Outlook...
Monday through Tuesday night...Mostly VFR conditions are expected.
Some low clouds or fog may advect in over the region late Tuesday
night. Winds will be westerly/northwesterly 5 to 15 kt, becoming
northeasterly late Tuesday night. Moderate confidence on the overall
pattern, but low confidence on the low cloud/fog potential Tuesday
night.
Wednesday and Thursday...Predominantly VFR, though periods of MVFR
or even IFR conditions are likely as rain moves in over the region.
Winds will be northeasterly or easterly Wednesday with speeds of 5
to 15 kt. By Thursday wind direction could be variable between
northwesterly and southwesterly, but wind speeds should be light,
less than 10 kt. Moderate confidence on the overall pattern, but low
confidence on timing details.
&&
.MARINE...
A west northwest wind is forecast to increase to 15 to 20 knots with
gusts of 25 to 30 knots, mainly for late today into tonight.
We will let the current Small Craft Advisory for the waters off the
Delaware Beaches run its course. When it expires at 6:00 AM, we will
issue a new Small Craft Advisory for that area and for Delaware Bay
for late today into tonight.
The Small Craft Advisory for the remainder of our ocean waters is in
effect until 6:00 AM Monday. The advisory covers waves around 5 feet
today, along with the increasing west to northwest wind.
Outlook...
Monday through Wednesday...winds and seas should stay below SCA
criteria.
Wednesday night and Thursday...Seas elevated above 5 ft and wind
gusts around 25 kt will be possible mostly on the Atlantic coastal
waters.
