.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build north of the area ushering in much
colder air across the region. A low pressure system will move
over the area on Friday then cold high pressure will return
again for Saturday. Another cold front will push through the
area on Sunday then cold high pressure returns yet again into
early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Morning update...

Not much change to today's forecast. Radar shows light echoes over
portions of the area and somewhat more solid activity moving in from
the west. We've seen a few reports of raindrops and sleet pellets,
but low level dry air has been making it difficult for precipitation
to reach the ground. This general theme should continue, though
precipitation coverage will likely expand a little bit in the coming
hours, mainly from the Philadelphia area and southward. Adjusted
ptypes a bit to expand mention of sleet based on what has been
reported, but any precip during the day today will be quite light
and of little to no impact. Previous discussion follows...

Cold high pressure will nose southward into our region today.
Meanwhile, low pressure will continue to take shape in the lower
Mississippi and Tennessee River Valleys. We are expecting a
mostly cloudy sky for today. An impulse traveling in the
westerly mid level flow may bring spotty light rain to parts of
eastern Maryland, Delaware, extreme southeastern Pennsylvania
and southern New Jersey during the late morning and afternoon
hours. Temperatures will remain chilly with highs mostly in the
30s. The wind direction should stay in the north to east
quadrant at speeds of 10 MPH or less.

The high to our north should be slow to retreat tonight.
Meanwhile, the surface low is forecast to move across the Ohio
River Valley toward the eastern Great Lakes. A secondary low is
expected to develop off the Middle Atlantic coast late tonight
before strengthening and passing off Cape Cod on Friday
afternoon.

A short wave located over the Southern Plains early this
morning is expected to be ejected toward the northeast and it
should pass over our region late tonight, enhancing the
developing precipitation associated with the surface low. We are
forecasting steady precipitation to spread into our area from
the west and southwest this evening. The precipitation will
likely continue into Friday morning.

The precipitation should begin as a wintry mix along the
immediate Interstate 95 Corridor and points northwestward. It
will transition through snow to sleet then to freezing rain as a
strong push of warm advection takes place aloft. Eventually,
surface temperatures will warm above freezing at most locations
on Friday morning to allow the precipitation to change to rain,
except in the elevated terrain of the Poconos and far northern
New Jersey. Snow and sleet accumulations should range from an
inch or less in southeastern Pennsylvania and central New
Jersey, to 2 to 5 inches in the Poconos and far northern New
Jersey. Ice accumulation of a tenth to a quarter inch are
possible. As a result, all our counties in eastern Pennsylvania
are now under a Winter Weather Advisory. The same is true for
New Jersey from Mercer and Middlesex Counties northward. New
Castle County, Delaware has been placed under a Winter Weather
Advisory due to the potential for a little freezing rain in the
far northern part of that county tonight.

The event should be mostly rain in southern New Jersey, most of
Delaware and eastern Maryland (except for the far northeast).

Temperatures are anticipated to rise slowly from tonight into
Friday morning.

A mid level short wave trough located over the Rocky Mountains
early this morning will progress to the east. It should pass
over the northeastern states on Friday afternoon, bringing an
end to the precipitation. A gusty northwest wind is forecast to
develop in the wake of the short wave axis and the departing
surface low on Friday afternoon.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
By Friday night the surface low pressure that brought winter
weather to the region will be exiting the region with a surface
cold front crossing the zones Friday night. Behind the front,
much drier and colder conditions will sweep over the region.
Winds will also be gusty at time Friday night, with some
transient gusts in the 20 to 25 MPH range. Temperatures Friday
night and Saturday morning will be tricky as an upper level jet
streak is forecast to move overhead again which will likely
produce some mid and high clouds. This coupled with the
increased PGF would tend to produce slightly warmer temperatures
than guidance is indicating. Taking a look at the NBM data,
reveals a skewed distribution with a tail towards the warmer
values. Have nudged up low temperatures for Saturday morning
slightly to account for this. Dry conditions will then continue
Saturday as surface high pressure slowly oozes east across the
Ohio River Valley. Expect high temperatures in the mid to upper
30s. It should be noted that there also could be a tighter
gradient in temperatures than shown in the forecast here. Taking
a look at the low level thermal profile reveals 850 MB isotherm
packing with 13 degrees C below zero across northern NJ and 2
degrees C below zero forecast across southern DE. Surface to 850
MB thickness show less packing though, so have kept a weaker
temperature gradient across the region for now.

A potent shortwave is then forecast to dive southeast across
Quebec Saturday night into Sunday morning. Out ahead of this
system, temperatures will rise into the mid 40s with dry
conditions expected initially. Sunday afternoon into evening,
the wave will be heading southeast with a strong cold front
surging southeast. Ahead of the system Sunday, another round of
some gusty winds will be possible across the region. Towards the
Poconos, even some snow squalls could occur. As of current,
confidence is low on this though. The main wave axis appears to
have moved slightly further east, meaning our area would be on
far southwestern extent of the best area for snow squalls.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Surface high pressure will be building in from the northwest
Monday as the aforementioned cold front will be sweeping well
offshore. Behind the cold front, dry conditions with
temperatures below normal are forecast. Some gusts in the
morning will be possible, due to the strong CAA, but as high
pressure moves overhead winds will start to subside.

A rather progressive pattern will then setup as another potent
upper level wave over the Hudson Bay dives southeast. Out ahead
of this wave, the area will rapidly become warm sectored. The
main question here is the speed and amplitude of the wave.
Taking a look at the WPC EOF data reveals a 500 MB dipole over
southeastern Canada at this time indicating a timing uncertainty
with the wave. This can also be seen with the NBM data as the
high temperature IQR quickly widens starting Monday into
Tuesday. Given the above, have stuck close to the NBM
deterministic. As of current though, model guidance does appear
to be leaning towards above normal temperatures starting next
Tuesday and continuing into next Friday.

.AVIATION /19Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Through this evening... Mainly VFR with BKN to OVC CIGs around 5000
ft. Scattered showers of snow, rain, and sleet are possible mainly
from PHL south which could briefly reduce visibility to 5 to 6
miles. East-northeast winds 5 to 10 kt. High confidence.

Tonight... Becoming MVFR then IFR, with most of the area IFR by 06z
or soon after. A mixed bag of precipitation is expected. South of
PHL, it should be mainly rain. PHL itself could have a short period
(1 to 3 hours) of freezing rain or sleet before a change to all
rain. North of PHL and especially towards RDG and ABE, a longer
period of sleet and freezing rain is expected before the change to
rain. Sleet and freezing rain will likely fall for much of the night
in those areas. CIGs and VSBYs could decrease further late in the
night especially from PHL southward as fog may develop. Areas of
LIFR conditions are likely. Winds mainly east-northeast at 5 to 10
kt but may become light and variable late in the night especially
near and south of PHL. Moderate confidence.

Friday... Initially, IFR to LIFR in lingering rain, low clouds, and
fog. Precipitation should gradually end through the morning. Clouds
will begin to break in earnest towards midday and early afternoon,
and VFR conditions should return for much of the afternoon. Light
winds in the morning, mainly from the east-northeast. Winds shifting
to southwest then west-northwest through the day. Gusty west-
northwest winds possible by afternoon with speeds of 15 to 20 kt and
gusts to 30 kt. Some LLWS possible in the morning mainly near MIV
and ACY. Moderate confidence overall.

Outlook...

Friday night...VFR. Winds northwesterly around 10-15 kt with
gusts up to 25 kt early. Winds will gradually diminish overnight
to around 10 kt. Transient wind gusts will remain possible
through the night. Some high clouds will be possible. High
confidence.

Saturday...VFR. West to northwesterly winds around 10 kt. Winds
back from the southwest overnight. High confidence.

Sunday...VFR. Southwest to west winds around 15 kts with gusts
up to 35 kt. Winds will turn northwesterly into the evening. A
period of snow showers or snow squalls are possible at RDG/ABE
later in the day. High confidence in prevailing conditions, but
low confidence on the chance of snow squalls.

Monday...VFR. Northwesterly winds around 10 kts with gusts up
to 20 kts. High confidence.

.MARINE...
A northeast wind around 15 knots is expected for today into
tonight. The wind is forecast to become variable for a time on
Friday morning before settling into the west and increasing to
15 to 20 knots with gusts of 25 to 30 knots on Friday afternoon.
A new Small Craft Advisory has been issued for Friday.

Outlook...

Saturday...Sub-SCA conditions with west-northwest winds from 15
to 20 kt. Seas from 2 to 3 feet.

Sunday...Sub-SCA conditions with westerly winds from 15 to 20
kt. Seas from 2 to 3 feet. A cold front will then cross the
waters Sunday night with wind gusts near 25 kt possible. Seas
will also be 3 to 5 feet. An SCA might be required Sunday night
into Monday morning.

Monday... Marginal SCA conditions initially Monday morning will
give way to northwest winds 15 to 20 kt as high pressure
approaches from the northwest. Seas decreasing to 2 to 4 ft.
